a puddle..on top of the reactor..that's what it is.......I swear it's not a fissioning nuclear core...

16 ( +18 / -2 )

a puddle, we think, we believe, maybe, we don't know....

BUT ITS' UNDER CONTROL! PM Abe says so....

9 ( +13 / -4 )

Disgusting.

They haven't done anything for two years, the problems that they caused, the people who can't go back to their homes, and now all the hype's on the Olympics. All those people who had to be relocated and had their families split apart, do you think they care about the Olympics? No. The government should be sorting out this mess as its number one priority - nothing else!!!

11 ( +14 / -3 )

So it's "under control" but they have no idea what's going on?

4 ( +11 / -7 )

They knew about this from July but it was more convenient to report it after the Olympics pick?

18 ( +21 / -3 )

A puddle atop the reactor is producing steam?

What utter BS!

The hot corium has hit a water course under the reactor and is producing heat and we have steam!

Maybe, Tepco wants a press release writer? I can tell it like it is!!!!!!!!!!

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it believed the steam was coming from a puddle sitting atop the reactor

It's more likely to be a puddle under the reactor as the cores melt down through the earth. However, they will stop eventually. Just after they hit the water table and cause a nitrogen explosion that will make Hiroshima look like a fart in a bath tub. But, don't worry folks! It's under control-ed.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

10000 days ago the chernobyl disaster happened.I have a feeling that when fukushima reaches that mark those imbeciles will be still bothching it up.Bt the japanese will feel good because they hosted the olympics!!

3 ( +8 / -5 )

All those people saying the Government should be on this... what do you propose they do? What should they be doing that TEPCO aren't?

-5 ( +9 / -14 )

This would be radioactive steam, would it?

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Clearly there's a proble, but haha, some of the comments here. We hear of a little steam, and we're off the deep end. Conspiracies! Massive explosions! (Read below for more.)

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

I see people thumb me down, but please tell me what you propose the Government can do that TEPCO hasn't already tried? Or is there some kind of magic bullet?

-1 ( +9 / -10 )

How about the Government be a little more transparent on there end and be up front about their info. Instead, they wait for something to happen and cover it up. Seems very reactionary rather than proactive to public. Be more specific and less vague.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

I wonder what Abe's understanding of "under control" is. Would hate to find out what his idea of out of control is.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Abe should resign. He is in charge of this debacle, he said he was in charge.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

"Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it believed the steam was coming from a puddle sitting atop the reactor, but has not been able to clarify why vapor started appearing occasionally from July this year"

For me, having experienced the actual earthquake was sureal; but the lying the came afterwards was more terrifying. I guess most of you remember those days. Nothing has changed I see, but why? Doesnt it point to a much more deeper problem...like lying?. A puddle creating steam? You mean thats water evaporating, or the vessel is so hot that a puddle is steaming off? Dare I say it, during these jubiliant times, but there is a culture of lying in Japan, not only with Tepco. Its interesting how so many blame everything that went wrong at Fukushima on Tepco. Who works at Tepco? Japanese. Why wasnt Tepco disolved by the gov? Hasnt the gov took over responsibility of the clean up? Who is to fault now?

8 ( +11 / -3 )

please tell me what you propose the Government can do that TEPCO hasn't already tried? Or is there some kind of magic bullet?

Be up front and transparent, disclose ALL the information you have mislead the world about. THEN, hire the best knowledge in the world which will tell you to invest a lot more resources and money at the problem.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

@ohayo206

Be more specific and less vague.

Because you think they actually know what they're doing ? As so many have mentioned - it's strange how these "happenings" are suddenly appearing - AFTER the vote on the Olympics...

3 ( +6 / -3 )

please tell me what you propose the Government can do that TEPCO hasn't already tried?

They could start by using professionals instead of untrained temp workers. They could also use more expensive fixes instead of trying to cut costs by bodgy fixes. And, if they were really serious, they would sit down with a panel of experts, both international and local and make a plan and schedule on how they intend to deal with this crisis instead of just letting the mistakes build up. The need many more water storage tanks and the cheap ones they are using are very conveniently leaking a couple of hundred tons of water into the ground and ocean every day. They need a fixed and internationally transparent plan to be carried out by as many professional workers as necessary and the cost of the clean up needs to be disregarded to get it done! - That is what the government can do! But, they won't!

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Thank you Disillusioned - that's what irks me about any story to do with Fukushima: load of people slagging TEPCO and the Government off, but not actually suggesting what CAN be done, so again, thanks Disillusioned for pointing out what could be done to improve the situation.

Now if only the Government actually put that sort of thing into action people might have a bit more confidence for the future.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Go on Abe, go stand near that streaming reactor and tell us all "it's under control" go on mate, everyone will believe you .

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Very well said, both Thunderbird2 and Disillusioned!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

A to do list...........

1.They need a massive dam around the site with multiple water treatment facilities to stem the pollution 2.Thousands of people have to be rehoused, especially the young 3.Food contamination has to be more strictly checked 4.Alternatives to nuclear have to be implemented and researched more thoroughly as a priority 5.Research into and treatment of those contaminated by radiation also needs to be prioritised 6.Intensive farming programs have to be set up as the sea protein declines due to dangerous radioactivity 7.The government has to publish the actual radiation readings at ground level and allow people living in danger to leave

The Japanese government is going to be wasting its scarce resources building bridges and stadiums for the olympics when it should be saving the lives of its people by doing much more to prevent the escape of dangerous radiation

And does anyone want to add to the list?

3 ( +6 / -3 )

TEPCO-kun, the government's schoolmaster will slap your fingers ! Stop giving a wrong image of the country with scary word like steam. Let me rewrite the tittle :

Romantic Autumn mist visible over Fukushima Daiichi Jinja: TEPCO and Yokoso Japan.

This would be radioactive steam, would it?

so we may have radioactive rain showers?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Stream and a steaming puddle of water and no problems at the crippled nuclear reactor....Then it must just be run off from the local onsen center. Boiled eggs anybody?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The Japanese government has decided to spend $470 million on a scheme to freeze the soil around the reactors to form an impenetrable wall of ice they hope will direct groundwater away from them.

Simply brilliant! Activate your super ice powers! and... where exactly is "away from them"?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Steam? It's eerie that a poster on here predicted the steam would start up again just a day or two ago!

I see people thumb me down, but please tell me what you propose the Government can do that TEPCO hasn't already tried? Or is there some kind of magic bullet?

I agree - it's odd that such suggestions get thumbed down. I got thumbed down plenty for suggesting that, if you need robots built to deal with this situation, where better than Japan to get them built? I think people actually want this situation to get worse sometimes!

This ice wall...well, correct me if I'm wrong, but won't it melt? Or is it not actually ice but some other substance?

For me, having experienced the actual earthquake was sureal; but the lying the came afterwards was more terrifying. I guess most of you remember those days. Nothing has changed I see, but why? Doesnt it point to a much more deeper problem...like lying?

It changed my perception of the Japanese too. Obviously, I was aware of all the quirky things about the Japanese mindset, but that was all part of the Japan experience. Come the disaster and seeing the lack of honesty and the way people just accept what they are told in the face of the truth and I knew I was living in the wrong place!

6 ( +6 / -0 )

more BS and cluelessness from Tepco

1 ( +3 / -2 )

"I see people thumb me down, but please tell me what you propose the Government can do that TEPCO hasn't already tried? Or is there some kind of magic bullet?"

Easy: finally allow foreign inspectors and help in, and disseminate all information in a timely manner.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I'm very worried about PM Abe's priorities.

He seems to think it's more important to:

Host the Olympics in Tokyo.

Beef up the Japanese military because of some stupid squabble over a few uninhabited rocks.

Join the TPP and get totally ripped off by the US.

Sell Japanese nuclear technology abroad.

Than save the lives of several hundred thousand people in Tohoku.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If there is steam coming from the reactor I would say that it is not quite as cool as TEPCO believes, however, when has TEPCO been correct on this disaster since it happened and truthful.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

"I see people thumb me down, but please tell me what you propose the Government can do that TEPCO hasn't already tried? Or is there some kind of magic bullet?" Easy: finally allow foreign inspectors and help in, and disseminate all information in a timely manner.

They have appointed an expert from the USA to help, have they not? Isn't that a move in the direction you are suggesting?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

i think this should be priority or should already been a priority for the PM and his cabinet, as this does not only affect Japn alone but also neighboring countries, and poisoning the envnt does not only affect ocean itself but fishermen who depend alot for maybe earning income, which in turn can also allows them to send their kids to school, and so forth.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

One more note people then gone.

TEPCO needs to bring in the actual designers and contractors that built the reactors along with the people that are top in their fields with nuclear reactors and forced to do it by the government.

One more note, is TEPCO being fined daily for allowing this to continue with no end in sight?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I think Abe actually said "It`s out of control" but because his pronunciation was off and do to the short vowel sounds in the Japanese language it sounded like "under control."

Exactly the same reaction here. The earthquake is kind of a moment everybody who was in Japan at the time has in common. What followed was what got me to wonder what kind of place this is, where not one soul seem to even question what is going on. This shit is on my mind almost daily. In my local supermarket, they sell cucumber from Fukushima. It might be safe and all, but it sends the wrong message to me to try to get people to go back to eating Fukushima produce this early. What surprises me even more is when people buy the stuff, talking about "supporting" Fukushima or what have you. It's like it is blinders on, no matter what. Much like you said, I realize I am in the wrong place.

Vapor has begun rising again from a reactor at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, more than 2 1/2 years after its core melted down, the site’s operator said Friday.

So the site operator said there was steam, and everyone thinks that TEPCO, the site operator is hiding something. Hmmm, somewhere there could be logic in that argument...........

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Now time for a credible international committee of nuclear experts, who explain the whole situation and say the truth to masses

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Steaming once again eh? Get out the veggies, let's do a barbecue and invite the kiddies in.

Sewage treatment plants report rising Iodine 131 levels, the radioactive water going into ocean is increasing in radiation, but no worries.

It is all in cold shutdown. Everything is back to normal and safe.

Tommorrow the plan is to open a tourist vacation spot at Fukushima complex, with spent fuel pools featuring a hot springs rejuvanating radiation treatment, and basements featuring hormesis radiation treatment for sick people.

The more radiation, the better, or so say the nuclear 'experts'.

Smear some more glowing green cesium on that squash, and slather on the plutonium topping.

Shhh! Don't talk too loudly or everyone will want one!

I know a French newspaper that would probably welcome you onto the staff.

I wouldn't give them ideas though! The first time I got an electric shock from a swimming pool I thought there must be something seriously wrong with the wiring. Apparently, it's 'healthy' and 'normal'. To me it looks downright dangerous!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

its a tragedy.. but what they are doing now really does not make sense after 2.5 years... since beginning no one take it seriously... which result in what we saw in the form as contaminated milk powder, contaminated pork and beef serve to school children.. contaminated drinking water.. hazardous waste they burned in Tokyo. why the govt is not telling truth

3 ( +5 / -2 )

AGreenRoad,

Sewage treatment plants report rising Iodine 131 levels, the radioactive water going into ocean is increasing in radiation, but no worries

Do you have a reference for that?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

why the govt is not telling truth

Probably because it's too hard to stomach.

The problem is that the nuclear accident is like toothache - it won't go away if you ignore it - it will just get worse and worse. Unlike toothache, however, there appears to be no solution - no cure.
