Xinhua is already working on a hundreds of years old map including the islet as indisputable evidence of China's historical possession of the newly surfaced lava blob. 「Snark」

dang, you beat me to it taj :)

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Has the Chinese government claimed it for China yet?

5 ( +8 / -3 )

China will soon claim this island.

Lol funny I didn't read the comments until the end of the article...any bets china claims within the next bit ??

4 ( +6 / -2 )

China, Korea, Taiwan...all will claim. The reason? Historically, when earth didn't cool down, it was a part of their land. They just found that in their local wikipedia.

Back in 1986 a new island appeared in the vicinity of Iwo Jima but disappeared 49 days later eroded by the waves. For the time being it would be better not to name the island.

Readers, no more references to China please.

You all beat me to it ! Just reading the title, I was wondering WHO would claim it !

2 ( +5 / -3 )

One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Why on earth would a nation be pleased because they have a bit more unliveable rock in their name? It's awesome that there is potential for a new 'island' -- after all, that is what Kyushu is.

How can I claim this new island, Kazan-jima?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

There are hardly any news about Japan in USA but we could watch this beautiful island appearance.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

There would be news when Japan sinks into the ocean. No more territorial claims to fight over.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No need to fight over Takeshima or Senkoku island--not when you can just grow another one.

The one in 1986 lasted just over a year.

1986 eruption An submarine eruption built a new island on 18 January 1986, but the new island had been eroded again by waves and disappeared under the surface by 8 March 1987.

Because it has a direct bearing on territorial areas and limits, EEZs and the development of natural resources.

Ossan: "Because it has a direct bearing on territorial areas and limits, EEZs and the development of natural resources."

Or bragging rights.

And for the record, I know I did not state myself well in the last comment. "That's what Kyushu is" was meant to simply point out that Kyushu was also formed from a volcano.

I am knocking wood for everyone in Japan. This may be relating to the Ring of Fire. No more major earthquake, please.

I already claimed the outcropping, but my claim appears to have gone into the memory hole.

Need someone to drill the core of the island to open permanently so the lava will continue to flow out to make a bigger island.
