A 25-year-old woman and her 3-month-old daughter were killed when their car was hit by an oncoming truck in Mitoyo, Kagawa Prefecture, on Tuesday morning.

According to police, the accident happened at around 9:40 a.m. on a curve on National Route 11. Witnesses said it appeared the truck crossed over the center line and hit the car head-on, Fuji TV reported.

Both vehicles went off the road after the impact and landed in a vacant lot. A crane had to be used to lift the truck off the wreckage of the smaller car.

The dead woman and child were identified as Emi Iwakura and her baby Miyu, police said. The 63-year-old driver of the truck sustained light injuries. Police are questioning him about the cause of the accident.

RIP...always a sad way to go when people cant simply stay in their lane

Truck driver was probably looking down to light up a smoke and lost control of the truck. Or he was on the phone. Tragic.

Just as read this while waiting to cross the road, two trucks sped up ( at the very least 60 - 70 kph) to race through a red light as the other way turned green. Crazy truck drivers are everywhere!!!

How incredibly tragic. Although his jail sentence will definitely be inadequate, I hope that this weighs on his conscience until he dies.

If it was something like texting or smoking at the wheel, he deserves a life sentence at least, however I will be surprised if they even give him a couple of years inside.

Poor driving? RIP

I'll wager that the car was a Kei, and the injuries could have been lessened in a proper car.

It is beyond me why the J-police let so many law breakers go unpunished on the roads. I can't make a call on this one cos there isn't enough info but, speeding, running red lights, texting and talking on phones, doing make up, reading a damn newspaper, and many more things I see drivers doing every day are just commonplace! Then there are the bicycles as well. In 2008 they changed bicycle laws making a helmet compulsory for under 13s, using a cell phone, using and umbrella and using headphones illegal, but just about every cyclist I see is doing at least one of these or more at the same time.

What do Japanese police do with their time anyway?

Gonna buy a friggin' tank for my wife. Never of those little keis.

That poor husband and father. My thoughts are with him and the rest of the family.

Though I agree that keis are definitely not as safe as normal cars, the Japanese news says she was driving a 乗用車 and he was driving an 大型トラック. It probably didn't matter what she was driving, the truck hit the car, then landed on top of it. I don't think even the safest car in the world is designed to withstand the crushing force of a multi-tonne truck landing on it's roof.

RIP poor woman and baby and condolences to the poor husband/father.

@Get Real-It was a horrific accident. When I saw the vehicles on TV, you could not even make out what type of car the mother and angel were in. Tragic. RIP.

Need more info. But the woman is dead so cant ask her any questions. Hope she wasnt on her phone or holding the baby. Also hope the trucker wasn`t driving like a maniac. They often do.

This is truly horrible. Two young lives snuffed out in an instant. I hope the driver of the truck wasn't texting or sleeping.

No vehicle would have saved them. How awful. Mea culpa - should have read the article.

Truck drivers are a joke (or more accurately, the law is), intimidating other road users with chrome battering ram bumpers, watching TV, phoning/texting, all the while hiding behind their little curtains with a tsuyoimongachi attitude.

How about mandatory black box recorders filming inside the cab as well as outside?

RIP to two young lives. Texting, lighting a smoking and eating should not be done when the car is moving. The lady behind me the other day was eating a bowl of soba!

head on collision with a truck, don't matter what car you got, you gonna get spanked

There are so many things people have mentioned except..the chance that he may have even fallen asleep..either way this was a horrible accident..and this man will have to live the rest of his life knowing he took two young lives.
