Woman found bound at home tied herself up to avoid going to work

Police said Friday that a woman in her 20s, who was found lying on the floor of her apartment in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward, with her wrists and ankles bound, has admitted to tying herself up because she didn't want to go to work.

According to police, the woman's sister contacted her landlord on Aug 19 after she hadn't heard from her. The landlord and police entered the apartment at about 4 p.m. and found the woman lying on the floor with her wrists and ankles bound. The woman was taken to hospital, where doctors say she briefly lost consciousness.

Fuji TV reported that police were unable to question her at the time and believed she had been tied up by a would-be robber, although there were no signs of forced entry in the apartment.

On Wednesday, the woman was released from the hospital and questioned by police. Fuji reported that she broke down and admitted she had staged the whole incident, tying herself up. She was quoted by police as saying, “I didn’t want to go to work.”

Police said they let the woman off with a strong reprimand.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Or more likely she was training in the sacred ancient Japanese art of "Self-Bondage", and somehow failed to pay attention to details.

thank you for making me laugh out loud, JT. Great headline!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I suspected from the beginning that a crime was not involved. Just say you had a cold if you didn't want to go to work.

1 ( +5 / -3 )

OMG. I thought I had seen it all. Great water cooler topic for today, thanks.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I used to deliberately miss my train stop because I didn't want to go to work, sometimes by more than 250km. That was when the wife made sure I went to see a man in a white coat. I suggest this lady does the same....

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Sounds like she was release from the hospital due to an allergic reaction to what is simply call work. She has a severe allergy and that is work lol

2 ( +4 / -2 )

...And if her arms and legs were free they would demand and, or, carry her to work, forcefully. Pathetic!!! Make her pay for the public funds spent on her and send her to serve a few hundred hours of community service!! Maybe she will find a position more satisfying than her current job.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Hope she is fired

her apartment in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward

and whose paying for your fancy neighborhood apartment? YOUR COMPANY, now get back to work

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

Wow. How bad is her job / work environment?!

Could it be that that's yet another story to cover something even more embarrassing?

Either way, I'm glad they didn't name her. Poor woman obviously needs some help.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Lunatic. She could have just asked for assistance.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

It's not the job or the work environment. It is the ethics of employers and labor laws in general. One has to prove themselves to be kidnapped to avoid the wrath of their overlord boss!

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Who says Japanese are not creative?

9 ( +11 / -2 )

I'd like to know how she tied her wrist up to the point that she could not free herself.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

With so many people in Japan struggling to find work, this woman should just be grateful she's employed.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Setagaya aint that fancy

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Good for you lady!

Now, take the next step and change your life, instead of your life changing you

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Quickly hatched cover story I think. It sure fails to explain how she got to be unconscious.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

TheDevilsAssistantAug. 23, 2013 - 02:18PM JST I'd like to know how she tied her wrist up to the point that she could not free herself.

Zipties.

And to all you people saying pathetic, there are (many) people who jump in front of trains to avoid their next day at work, tying yourself up is probably cheaper on society even with the two cops who had the week of their careers sorting this one out.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Could it be that that's yet another story to cover something even more embarrassing?

Taj, Good Point! S&M play gone bad?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Bound to fail.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Mgnus Roe, I'm prety sure being tied with zip ties would not constitute a news article to say "her wrists and ankles bound, has admitted to tying herself up."

Also, the people that jump in front of trains are losing more days than the next day at work.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

I expected something like that but more in the form of a partner having tied her... and the busybody landlord arrived unannounced in the middle of some role play that was not problematic, so she had to do the tanuki to get some delay before she found an explanation.

to the point that she could not free herself.

She probably could or call her buddy by telephone. She was pretending. Bottom line, don't let your mother's phone calls unanswered too long.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

If she works at a typical Japanese workplace, I don't blame her.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

I've had some bad jobs in my life but none that I've hated enough to have done something like that. I think quitting would have been the far more sensible option or at least just calling in sick.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@ambrosia

The job itself might not be the problem. If she's clinically depressed, then the thought of having to deal with colleagues and customers, however pleasant, could have driven her to this. Time to see the doc.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

That story sounds a bit ropey, to be honest. Sounds like there are still a few loose ends. I hope she isn't just stringing everyone along.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

That was very original and imaginative...

0 ( +3 / -3 )

She could have just asked for assistance.

And be bullied for the rest of her career?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Ho ho. How amusing.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Why weren't you at work? I got tied up.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

She is not too smart if you ask me. Those self-possessed skill sets could have been used to allow her to become the first modern day Houdini and quit her job.

Clever she is.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

What happened to calling in sick??

Is this story for real?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Awesome

0 ( +1 / -1 )

In her 20s? Gee, I bet she's in a rush to get married so she can quit her job.

The woman should be charged. For all you going on about her mental state, I doubt there is anything wrong with her besides being lazy, selfish and deceptive. Don't like your job? Quit and find a new one. Hate going to work? Quit and find a new job. Don't want to go to work? Either take a holiday, call in sick or... quit and get a new job. This woman is NOT depressed. Depressed people do not come up with such cunning ways to avoid doing things they don't like - they are too busy being depressed. Unreal and a waste of tax money and time.

I also hope she is fired - she's lied to her company, the cops and her family.

Also, "passed out"? She's either a very good actress or those doctors need to go back and retrain.

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

She could have simply told her boss to "take that job and shove it", then simply look for another job.

Some people have nothing in that empty space behind the eyes & nose and under the hair, I think her boss is better off without her.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

A bit extreme, though highly entertaining!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Haha, did not see that coming.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Lolz, someone needs to look for another job methinks. :P

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Maybe she took "tied up" taught to her by one of "English teachers" literally.... ?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's so cliché, but here goes, "Only in Japan!"

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I give her points for originality.

Boss : Why were you late? Woman: I was tied up.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Seems there is no comment or story part in the article as to why she did not want to go to work. Was her job so terrible she would resort to this behavior? More information would be interesting to read other than the cops left her off the hook with a warning.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@thedevilsassistant, are wanting to try it yourself? Perhaps the woman felt trapped, hated her work environment. Maybe she was bullied at work but could not just quit and could not easily find another job. We do not know what or why she thought that but sometimes feeling helpless and hopeless causes people to do desperate things. I wonder what was so bad at her place of work that she would do something like this. I hope she ends up ok and in 20 years she is helping others. Never judge those who act desperately and have not harmed another.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Talk about not wanting to work.......Wow...

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

"tied herself up"

That's a neat trick, I'd like to see all these JT posters try that, excepting TheDevilsAssistant, the only other poster who seems to realize that something is wrong with this story.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Well she may end up not having to worry about going to work! That is just so over the top crazy!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I think the woman is hiding the truth out of fear from the person who did this, probably an atheist.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Really? It is bad enought to do what she did but ti then admitt to it, and think she is not the dumbest creature on the planet!

Now, this would add to my 363 excuses for not able to go to work. At least my 362 excuses wouldn't have to be repeated. I just need 2 more goooooood excuses to make it once a year excuse!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

She was feeling a bit ropey.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Welcome to creative Japan, the place beyond imagination!

Explore the impossible!

I luv Japanese!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Wow - I don't think I've had to go that far in making up an excuse. Just say your stomach is upset or something like that. Way too much drama.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Another person trying to bankrupt the medical system by not seeking help.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

Never judge those who act desperately and have not harmed another.

Agreed. Hope she gets counseling. It is okay to end story like this.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

She should start her own Shibari-Bondage Shop All Legal &plenty of fish!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Please don't laugh at her, this is a serious issue when people try to find and create excuses not to go to work. It is evidence of overwork and burn-out.

Japanese as a whole need more vacations and less overtime.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

lucabrasi: My post was meant somewhat facetiously. My mistake though for thinking most people would understand that. Obviously if someone is going to such ridiculous extremes to avoid work there is something wrong, be it clinical depression or just a lack of intelligence and creativity needed to have thought of other options, but thanks for the lecture. I'm sure I'd never have sorted it out without your help.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@Ambrosia

Really?

Your facetiousness needs a bit of work, then.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

lucabrasi: Your facetiousness needs a bit of work, then.

Or your reading comprehension, then and your selectiveness, since there were at least 11 posts before mine which were equally facetious and some downright mean on which you made no haranguing comments.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

We've all had days such as this! Still.. I hope she's OK!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Never judge those who act desperately and have not harmed another.

Who's judging?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

My God! What she was doing tied?
