World's largest mailbox put up in Yamaguchi

By Jessica Kozuka

A lot of world records are inherently silly. Sure, you could set a record for the most mascot characters dancing in sync, but why would you? Because you are Japan, that’s why. And now Japan has grabbed another who-even-thinks-of-that world record: largest mailbox.

The mammoth mailbox stands in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and was constructed largely by engineering students at the local university. The record is listed by capacity, and this mailbox can hold a whopping 68.484 cubic meters of letters, postcards and idol fan mail. It’s about 12 times the size of a standard Japanese mailbox and stands 7.181 meters tall.

For a limited time, you can actually post things using the giant mailbox, though one wonders how exactly you are supposed to reach the slot. In any event, before breaking out your trampoline, stilts, or ladder, be sure to mark your mail with the specially provided rubber stamp that says, “Mailed from the world’s largest mailbox!”

"It’s about 12 times the size of a standard Japanese mailbox and stands 7.181 meters tall."

I am no mathematician but I would disagree with that. It has got to be a lot larger than 12 times the size of a standard mailbox, unless it is extremely thin and long.

Where's the giant phone next to it, so they can call someone who cares?

thank you Japan for another giant creation of the waste of manpower

Why denigrate something like this? It was a project by some engineering students, for God's sake and is harmless, it even generated some publicity for their city. I have seen engineering students in other parts of the world do some pretty silly things, such as hanging a car from a bridge.

12 times is accurate, 7.181m divided by 12 = 60cm high = standard postbox. If you talking area or volume then perhaps not, but they only mention height.

You can see an opening for post at the bottom of the box at the same height as a standard box.

It took engineering students to make a mailbox?? What are they teaching at that school? How about building a bridge?

If you're looking for a place to deposit the "junk mail", the World's Largest Garbage Can is located in Davis, CA in the recycling yard. Now, Godzilla-san will have a more convenient place for his mailings.
