Mechanical pencil

Platinum Pen has released a special edition reproduction of Japan’s first mechanical pencil. The lead is inserted from the tip of the pencil, which features a twist-feed mechanism. Manually produced, only several thousand units will be sold. The product will target the older generation with the retro design of the original version as well as trend-spotting consumers in their 20s and 30s.

Named the “Hayakawa Twist Feed Pencil,” the casing uses silver-plated brass with hand-engraved designs. Lead diameter is 0.5mm. Suggested retail price: 15,000 yen.

Suggested retail price: 15,000 yen.

Only 150,000 times more expensive than a 10-pack from the 100 yen shop.

I guess you don't know the difference between a cheap pen / pencil and an expensive one. I've been using a 20,000 yen pen for over 3 years. I wouldn't consider using another.

I don't think people make fewer mistakes by using expensive pen/pencil.

Altria - Come now, even if you got 10 mechanical pencils for 100 yen at the 100 yen shop, the Hayakawa pencil would be only 15,000 times as expensive, not 150,000 times. But you don't get 10 mechanical pencils for 100 yen at the 100 yen shop, you only get one. You can get it in combination with a 3 color pen, though! So it's only 150 times as expensive! You can get 10 regular pencils for 100 yen, but you have to sharpening them all the time...

I guess you don't know the difference between a cheap pen / pencil and an expensive one. I've been using a 20,000 yen pen for over 3 years. I wouldn't consider using another. That's good for you. But most people wouldn't consider spending 20,000 yen for a pen. Even if it is fancy and still works 3 years later.

"Pens and pencils are almost obsolete"

Only for people who don't write letters anymore. I still do. The people I write to appreciate getting hand-written letters.

To this day I don't go anywhere without my Pentel P205 0.5mm mechanical pencil that I bought five years ago (cost: $7). Unless I lose it or run over it with my car, it should last me 20, maybe 30 years with a minimum of care (like an occasional spring may need to get replaced). How long does a 100yen pencil last? Maybe a month or two if you're lucky. Better to buy the better quality product and buy less of them over time.
