Pen-scissors combo

Sunstar has released a new pen-scissors hybrid product that is aimed at Japanese women who often find they need a pair of scissors when out of the office or away from home -- cutting coupons, for example, or separating “purikura” pictures to give to friends.

The sharp edges of the scissors are concealed under the pen cap for safe storage, with a built-in clip making the product easy to attack to a pocket or bag. While the scissors portion of the product is small, the manufacturer says the blade is made from high-quality materials. There are 8 types total, 4 with patterns printed on them. 525 yen

easy to attack

Once used in an attack will this device be attached to the list of banned weapons?

Indeed borscht! Who would want a product that could easily attack a pocket or a bag?

Will this be OK for air travel?

Wow! You can "attack" your pocket or bag with this?

I see no pen. Just a pen-shaped pair of scissors.

Great idea and I am lol at the Japanese women who would like to cut coupons with it.

I'm definitely going to get this - I have lost 2 or 3 of my handy pocket scissors to airline security.

Do not bother taking it on a trip unless you check it in.

...Okay, so it's not really a pen at all then? It just LOOKS like one? Or are they just leaving that out? If not... false advertising!

This product is also guaranteed to drive Ei-kaiwa teachers nuts. 'Is this a pen?' 'Yes, it's not.'

Potentially good sales in NorthWest Pakistan and Afghanistan, until they become banned on flights...

Concealed weapon

If traveling via air, put them into your book in luggage as they would be classed as a weapon and you could end up missing your flight.

Scissors are one of the items you are not allowed to carry onboard, no matter how small.

"This product is also guaranteed to drive Ei-kaiwa teachers nuts. 'Is this a pen?' 'Yes, it's not.' "

Well played, sir. I hope that Ei-kaiwa teachers will include the full body groin frisking in the airport role-play exercise this year for realism. I suppose Japanese airport friskmasters will have to boost their vocabulary to include phrases such as "Is this a pool cue?", "Is this a scissors?", "Are you just glad to see me?" etc.

Now I have a question for everyone: so. Is this a scissors, or are these scissors? The article kind of snips around the edges on this one.

How very clever, dontcha think? Wonder what the shippng costs would be to the US? Do they come with those metal mesh gloves the deli sandwich-making folks wear at the Safeway supermarket when they cut your sub in half? Great Xmas stocking stuffer idea!!

Scissors with blades shorter than four inches ARE ALLOWED on carry-on. Check the TSA website.

I'm not very familiar with inches but Google tells me its about 10cm. Wouldn't most scissors, except for cooking, fit in this category then?

I just googled and indeed it says on TSA website that blades must be less than four inches (10cm). Japanese MLIT website says blades must be shorter than six centimetre. CATSA in Canada does not allow scissors on carry-on.

Depending on where you are leaving and arriving, you better be careful about it.
