Burning Bush

The rebels are not "drunk gorillas". Consumption of alcohol during combat is strictly prohibited in many rebel units. And these guys are really good, they shot down about twenty low-flying Ukrainian Air Force planes and helicopters with portable missile launchers and heavy machine guns and fought to a standstill almost the entire Ukrainian army. No way drunk gorillas could achieve that.

But you're absolutely right, the "Buk" system is a way too sophisticated for them. To effectively operate it a professional crew and several support systems are needed, and only a regular military force can provide all this. And the Ukrainian army had "Buk"-armed units near the crash area, it was fully deployed 156th Air Defence missile regiment. Ukrainian army is the most likely culprit in this ugly story.

No one has admitted responsibility for firing the sophisticated missile that brought down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17

Stopped reading after the first sentence. It hasn't even been determined that it was a BUK. Nice try reuters.

Only takes 5 minutes to set up the system, and 22 seconds from target acq to launch.

Making it so complex that only an advanced team could do it would tend to bar its usefulness in the field.

Additionally there were reports of a Russian team accompanying the Buk system on its way back over the border with Russia, soon after the shootdown.

The battery requires no more than 5 minutes to set up before it is ready for engagement and can be ready for transit again in 5 minutes. The reaction time of the battery from target tracking to missile launch is around 22 seconds.

A BUK system is easier to ascertain and decipher from the space simply based on its size alone. I trust them a lot more than the Mr. Know it all people on JT that have their security clearance. ;-)
