I'm sure Mrs Obama had more fun doing this than watching the noh performance.

She's a good sport and that looks like a lot of fun for everyone.

It looks like Ms. Obama is having a great time and what a lucky opportunity for the students, too! They'll be able to tell their future children and grandchildren that they played taiko with an American First Lady! What a cool thing to be able to say!

She's having a good time. Something we all should do often.

Fantastic to see Ms. Obama having and sharing so much fun. Spreading the love. Hope it helps to break down some of the institutionalised perception of different skin colours in Japan. We're all human, before anything else. We are born human and we can ALL DRUM a beat to that.

A world of difference. ~^.^/

This is great fun. I tried my hand on a taiko after a local festival years ago. Those sticks pack some wallop.

Excellent photograph capturing exhilarating mood and enthusiasm of the participants performing taiko.

Fushimi Inari is one of the best sights in Japan. In the world even.

I envy her...I want to visit Fushimi Inari too.

Absolutely. The best thing for Japan would be for all the morning news shows, web-based news sites, etc. to run this photo. It would do wonders for Japan's image.

Excellent point as well. But, unfortunately, as recent news from here in the states indicates, Japan is not the only onw ith that problem.

Braniac, both activities are intense pleasures, just in very different ways. The guests who get to try their hand at or are introduced to the varied and highly nuanced culture of Japan from high to low are incredibly lucky to get to do what the average tourist merely gets to watch.

This is a brilliant photo - it captures the pleasure that everyone had at that event, and I bet everyone in it treasures it.
