Didn't see them complain that the US hasn't paid for 4 years.

China showing its other face again. Yep, Japan needs to acknowledge the event, but if China can't and won't accept internationally binding rulings over one thing that goes against them they are showing utter hypocrisy when they complain about another country doing the same.

Come on, anyone who has been following along this UNESCO heritage game should not be surprised that Japan is playing games with funding.

just like every other country in the world. Agree.

China can talk when they at least contribute as much money to the UN as Japan does.

crying baby

Gosh, gooly, gee. It is history and it is time for the Chinese to forget it. How long are they going to continue yapping about what happened 70 years ago. What the World has to do is don't let it happen again!

It seems that China must pay more than Japan has paid because of China's GDP is much bigger. Wonder why Japan has paid the most in the past.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

China and North Korea are somwhat similar. Self-righteous attittude and lacking will of understanding others. It is the nature of the dictatorship.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

Japan simply aping its master, a single country that competes with the UN.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

West is not moving from what happened in ww2.how muh West and US have to pay for that to israel?talk about hypocrisy! It's easy to bash China on every news but it doesn't make it right tho.

Just other side of the story.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

It is history and it is time for the Chinese to forget it.

same as the Japanese have forgotten Hiroshima and Nagasaki? both Japan and China want to be victims for internal manipulation. China could care less about the money: this reaction is to feed the folks at home a good bit of nationalism. 9?11 is used but the extreme right in America to push it's agenda as well.

From what was said by the Chinese side that indicates that are "angry"?

Nothing the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said seem to indicate that she/China was angry.

“What Japan has said and done once again lays bare their wrong attitude of not acknowledging history,”

Nothing out of line here. We've all seen and know Japan's continuing denials toward its past war atrocities, like the Nanjing Massacre, and the sex slaves.

"Not paying fees to UNESCO to exert pressure is irresponsible. They will not achieve their aims.”

Again, it is just the truth. Japan tries to persuade UNESCO to not list the Nanjing Massacre papers by threatening fee payments. And Hua Chunying is right, the threat won't work.

In any case, there is no reason for China to be angered. The Nanjing Massacre papers will be listed regardless whatever threats Japan uses against UNESCO. If anything, there are probably two other more appropriated emotions China feeling this: 1) Sad: Japan is still denying its historical war crimes and preventing these two countries from working together for their other common interests. 2)Happy: the immature ways of Japanese foreign polices, the way it thought threats against UNESCO world work. And, again, to the global communities, it shows Japan still haven't come to accept its past and still living in denial.

It's absolutely disgraceful that the Chinese haven't forgotten their modern history, especially as it seems to upset so many people in Japan. Why can't the selfish Chinese consider the feelings of the Japanese who are discomfited by such talk?

gogogo: "Didn't see them complain that the US hasn't paid for 4 years."

Why would China complain about the US not paying to exert political pressure over Nanking related documents? And how many UNESCO heritage sights has the US pushed for since they decided to stop paying?

OssanAmerica: "China can talk when they at least contribute as much money to the UN as Japan does."

Actually, they can talk plenty now, since it is about Japan exerting influence and white-washing history again; in this case which involves CHina's bid directly. They certainly don't need to keep quiet if not donating enough money, and in any case since Japan has refused to pay the money they already promised, China has paid FAR more, hasn't it? and by your own statement it is JAPAN that should have no say. Oops!

Japan withholds UNESCO funding over history dispute

Money pressure threat to force your own views on others, very classy Japan.

Japan is doing neither of the above

From the article: Japan last year raised questions about the authenticity of the Nanjing Massacre documents submitted by Chinese organisations for the inclusion in the program and asked for fairness and transparency, prompting an angry retort from China.

OssanAmericaOCT. 20, 2016 - 07:25AM JST China can talk when they at least contribute as much money to the UN as Japan does.

Isn't it weird that for decades the chief stick to hit China with was the countries lack of human rights including free speech, and then the moment a Chinese person expresses an opinion "we" disagree with suddenly their rights that we've demanding them implement suddenly are only permitted if they pay "us"?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I say to China- if it bothers you so much that Japan is withholding the funding, why don't YOU pay the difference? You have the money.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Japan belongs to one of the nations who complains the most and against who, there are also the most complaints as far as international laws and the disregard for those goes. Japan is a segregative and discriminating system with very derogative, racist if and fascistic tendencies. Alway the first to complain to the UN about Taiwan, China, Russia, The two Koreas, and many others. Sending do twety two years old who merely graduated basic training as teachers and foreign aid specialists to third world country with no experience and no know how yet claiming that this is Japan it's great contribution for international aid..... The list is rather long... Japan should really shut up and clean house.befor complaining or saying another word.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Japan really is taking the low road on this one.

While China often ignores or violates international norms itself as some commenters have observed, that doesnt make their argument on this issue wrong - they actually have completely valid and rational points which it is hard to disagree with. Japans position is really untenable, and I think the decision on funding can only be explained as the government buckling to the irrational demands of far right nationalists (many of whom are, sadly, members of this government).

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Sir USA. please consider to restart your contribution Hey Japan! Shut up! Don't even speak a word about the way we do. Just Pay and go away. I am busy attending PRC's military parades.... by the Zecretary Genral of UN

China is in the right here. Japan is fool because it puts it in the class as the Zion state of Israel. Nanking/comfort women happened over 70 years ago for j sake. Probably no living person can remember because of dementia. Get over it and admit it happened, but also concentrate the massive amounts of good things Japan has done since. The future is waiting...

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Couldn't care less about UNESCO listings. Nanking was a brutal massacre, it will always be on the historical record, and NOTHING Japan does or does not do will erase it. Got that, wingers?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

While China's position is valid, it is invalidted by their own behaviour and failure to respect or conform to international standards of behaviour. The Chinese government's version of its own history is much more revisionist than is Japan's, and citizens have no right to even question it. Ask yourself which government you and your fellow residents are better off living under, and relocate as appropriate.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

China is constantly angry about something. Doesn't bode well for the future

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Yes BOTH China & Japan often get this stuff wrong, this time Japan has got it wrong pretty badly, there is NO WAY they can make thing look good except to right wing nutters residing in Japan............

agreed

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Yeah, China does seem like a cry baby and just exploiting another opportunity to diss on Japan. However, they do have a good point. Japan should not withhold funds just because they disagree with the inclusion of these documents. If Japan can build a case to prove these documents are wrong they would have s leg to stand on, but having Japanese conservatives coming and denying the massacre ever took place is not going to win them any friends anywhere in the world.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

If Japan can build a case to prove these documents are wrong they would have s leg to stand on,

UNESCO didn't , still don't let Japan speak a word. How can Japan prove anything?

Japan should stop being abused as world ATM.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

I hope UNESCO doesn't need much money. Seems many countries are not paying UNESCO. Was it Israel a few weeks ago that decided to withhold dues?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I think Just a User is the only one that understands this article. Japan is not saying it didn't happen. Japan just doesn't want UNESCO to accept China's version without checking all the historical opinions first. UNESCO should explain why they take China's version. Those Chinese papers could have come from the same place they dug up the 9-dash line map.

I wonder if, 100 years from now, people will still be reliving WW2... Since 1945 the world has seen many wars, many atrocities... Syria being the latest. Yes, as Aleppo is bombed by all sides and its population die people are still moaning about WW2 events. By all means they should be remembered, and the memories of those who lost their lives cherished, but to repeatedly play the victim card is tedious. Remembering those who died in the A bomb attacks as well as the sex slaves, but they are events which took place generations ago... they are as much a part of history as Jack the Ripper.

Nanjing and the sex slaves just seem to have become sticks to beat Japan with... is that all the memories are worth? Maybe I should start a petition to get Denmark to apologise for the Viking raids and massacres committed in Britain...

I wish they never let that woman coerce that guy into eating the apple.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japan is not saying it didn't happen.

Japan is saying it didn't happen. No evidence. There are many counter evidence to show it is impossible.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Yes, as Aleppo is bombed by all sides and its population die people are still moaning about WW2 events.

Yeah seeing as this was precipitated by the entity that is the US. Surely the continued support for alqaeda wasn't going to sit well with other people.
