The survey, of 1,000 adults carried out from March 6-8

It took 3 days to conduct a survey of 1,000 adults? (Asking ludicrously here) Just what kind of company took the survey, and all other associated questions.....

Seems to me to suggest that the takers were looking for a specific response and targeted the people who responded to create this "news".

One again, statistics like these should be taken with a grain of salt.

Took enough time to figure that out, better late than ever.

Would be interesting if THAAD actually makes a mark in history in nations decisions during this pivotal time.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Could be a street or telephone poll/survey.

@Yubaru... excellent insight!

Korea is geographically sandwiched by powerful China and Japan and has a history of invasions by the two countries. That explains why they react so sensitively to the move of the two countries. l

I have always thought Japan and South Korea have much more to gain by being closer.

There is history yes but they are more similar than either are to China.

Typical absurdly biased reporting from AFP. What are htey, owned by the Chong Daehyup? "atrocities including the use of up to 200,000 Korean women as sexual slaves " Even when the subject is South Korea-China relations.

Asking a citizen of any Asian country which neighbor he detests is bound to receive predictable answers. You could have obtained exactly the same replies/percentages by conducting this poll during the Yuan Dyansty.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

If China is so worried about THAAD compromising it's own capabilities, they should have kept North Korea on a tighter leash. They repeatedly declined to restrict North Korea and their missile tests, so this is their just desserts.

China has been incredibly STUPID the last 30yrs or so!

China could have EASILY cultivated GOOD relations with BOTH Japan & SKorea, BUT, it chose NOT to, it chose to totally unnecessarily militarize the whole Far East & SE Asia.....

EARTH TO CHINA, things were for the most part going GREAT in these parts of the world until you decided to be a A-hole & overtly militarize yapping on & on about ancient this & ancient that BS to justify this utter STUPID ramping up of your OFFENSIVE military capabilities, NO ONE WAS THREATENING China in any way at all

STUPID & here we are China is disliked more in SKorea than Japan, THAT takes SOME doing China.....STUPID!

GW: Chinese nationalism is hyped up by their unelected dictatorship to distract the population. Otherwise the Chinese people might start to wonder why they are ruled by a bunch of thieving, thuggish crooks.

Like Yubaru said, it seems like the poll wanted a specific response. It's kind of like showing this poll to the Chinese, and then asking them what they think about South Koreans...

The survey also showed the ratings of U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe all declining

I wonder what President Park's ratings are.

Yubaru nailed, I see hordes of Koreans enjoying Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka every single day PLUS I go to Korea several times a year and I NEVER met anyone who "hates" Japan or anything like that. They even smile and say stuff like "cool!" when I say I live in Japan.

I bet they start the question with "what do you think about Takeshima" or something like that. I tell you only old geezers from both countries have some negative sentiment toward its neighbor country, the rest of both countries are both very open-minded and like each other, japanese girls for example love Korean cosmetics and k-pop.

THAAD cannot stop thousands of rounds of conventional war heads from being delivered by canon into Seoul.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Did find it amusing the Takeshima/Dokdo display at Gimpo airport.

I would say since the Koreans are there and the Japanese aren't and haven't formed a landing party to get people off.. Korea have got the better claim, and although the grumpy old men in Japan won't let it go it might be the better move long term.

Cue Tina... :-)

Why this is even news shows how insecure South Korea can be, and Japan as well -- no nation more than the latter conducts surveys of who likes them, or what people like about them, etc. But if it makes some people happier to be less hated than others, so be it.

Agreed, common knowledge, China is playing a VERY risky game, burning the wick at both ends!

As I have often said here on JT, the wicks are LIT & its only a question of WHEN China will IMPLODE/EXPLODE or both!

Looking forward to your more accurate stats, Yubaru. Whenever you're ready.

Asking South Koreans about North Korea, no one says they hate North Korean people. They feel at one with the people of North Korea. They only hate the fools running their country.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Only in East Asia would you see a hate-index poll between neighbouring countries, which is very amusing considering, basically, they are all Chinese. You would never see this kind of poll in Europe. It reminds me of a quote, "I'm not raciest because I hate everybody equally!"

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Makes sense, you will always get burned by being close to China as ultimately they are only looking out for their own advancement and have a heavy ultra-nationalist domestic audience to constantly placate. I feel no sympathy for SK though with their shameless swooning at China. Both need to pick up their act

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"As I have often said here on JT, the wicks are LIT & its only a question of WHEN China will IMPLODE/EXPLODE or both!"

People have been saying this for decades. They were saying it under Mao and Deng. I get the feeling they'll continue saying it for decades to come.

The CCP will stay in power as long as they deliver economic growth. The election of Trump in the US is as bad an advertisement for changing to a democratic system as you could imagine.

Always considered South Koreans to be fashionably blasé hard markers so not surprised no one gets 5+.

I have always thought Japan and South Korea have much more to gain by being closer. There is history yes but they are more similar than either are to China.

Agree NZ. I think the world needs a new Bae Yong Joon (or do we really?!)

I do quite a bit of work in South Korea, sometimes working with Japanese and Korean engineers. It seems the younger generations have less of this animosity toward the other nation than those of older generations. This may not apply to the big picture but it is an observation.

I always thought if South Korea and Japan could form a closer relationship and partnership it would be very formidable.

By the way, now that North Korea has attempted to launch again today this seems more critical.

As for China; they have their own interests at heart and think very long term. I believe their long term objective is domination and leadership throughout East Asia. With all their problems they seem to have the ability to look decades ahead which is something the western world (especially my country of citizenship, the U.S.) lacks.

It would be interesting (if not terrible) to see what would happen inside of China if their economy collapsed.

In the end I hope South Korea and Japan can formulate close ties with the U.S. part of the alliance.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

South Korean survey: Japan: 2nd worst country. We hate them all. We just go there to work to get more money.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

@Tokyo-Engr ... Agree with you. It may take another generation or two for S Korea and Japan to have a closer relationship.

Yes, there is the terrible history not just from the last century but a few previous centuries. But, as you say and I agree with you, China plays a (very) long game and their ultimate goal is regional domination.

It has always been this, until the incompetence of the late-period Qing dynasty in the 19th century that led to a rapid decline of centralized power within China and the lost of influence over Korea.

True, that influence shifted to Japan. But Japan itself has gone though a lot of changes and is now a peaceful democracy, unlike China - which hopefully one day will be one. Meaning now S Korea and Japan have more in common with each other, including preservation of their hard-earned democracies.

PS ... Given the current US administration, I just don't see how anyone can rely on them at this time. Sure, the alliance must be maintained, but best be better prepared just in case.

Number 2? It's like Japan's not even trying anymore.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@Schopenhauer South Korea is not sandwiched between two powers. The only superpower in the region is China, Japan is a regional power, and South Korea has also became a regional power. Japan has a twice the population of South Korea, which is not that much. South Korea has a larger and more powerful army, and dominating economy. When the two Koreas unify, Korea will have the population of more than 80 million.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

@Schopenhauer That is such a ridiculous statement. Korea is sandwiched between China and America, not Japan and China. Japan is literally just a little bit larger than Korea. Korea has the 12th largest economy in the world, and larger and more powerful military than Japan.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

I don't think both China and Japan care how much S Korea hate them.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So what are Japans worst countrys?

In East Asia it trends to be the neighbors. Is there a limited economics only world view at work?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I have always thought Japan and South Korea have much more to gain by being closer. There is history yes but they are more similar than either are to China.

I would say all 3 have lots of similarities, as both SK and Jpn borrowed a lot from Chinese culture over the past 2000+ years.

Neither South Korea nor Japan are communist one-party dictatorships.
