“For any country, conducting drills in nearby seas is what they routinely do,” Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters.

“We ourselves carry out exercises in a solid manner. We take this as China’s routine exercise. It is our understanding that this is not the kind of exercise aimed at a particular country or a particular situation.”

Mature and measured response from Japan, If this was NK or china the BS and rhetoric would be thick and fast.

China still wields the biggest stick in the East China Sea. The Japanese don't want to discuss it seriously. They'd rather just assume that America will take care of everything and that China probably won't do anything even though it's kicking up a big fuss,

The PLA is the private army/navy/air-force of the Chinese Communist Party. The PLA is not a national military force like those of Japan or other democratic nations.

@Secular: As you say the PLA defo comes under the CMC and thus the General Secretary, it's not removed from the CP's structure, all those structures defo represent and ARE China, as we refer to the People's Republic of China. At least they are NOT a private army, AKA Blackwater USA. QED.

Good! While other countries have an ever increased critical view about China's military games, less people will get in and out of China. This is actually a double win.

China is communist today and the no. 2 economy because japan weakened the nationalist party in ww2. To blame china's militarization when Japan is doing the same is hypocritical on two levels.

My friend's flight from Singapore on Singapore Airline was supposed to land in Shanghai at 6:05pm. He arrived at 6:10pm. A delay of 5 minutes. I travelled to Shanghai via bullet train and arrived at 6:20, right on time. We were all alerted to the exercises and made our arrangements. This is China's exercises happening at the eastern seaboard, as simple as that. No need to read anything into it and the response from Japan is measuredly mature. That is good!

@tinawatanabe. Yes, there is an increased US submarine presence in the South / East China Sea now. According to Katsuya Masahiko, you can verify this by seeing a spike in nightlife activities of US servicemen in southeast Asian cities.

I wouldn't be surprised if the US "showed" the Chinese submarines in the area how outclassed they were, which would explain why Chinese activity in the senkakus have died down and there has been more problems with the Wygher region more recently. With china spinning out of control, the communist party badly needs an outside enemy more than ever, but it needs to be one that hey can beat, thus create a "war on terror" against a minority population.

If Japan is so cool... then why did ABE abolish Article 9 and start the re-armament program? Article 9 was a promise to the World Japan will not start a war ever again in foreign soil, if ABE's motive is strictly defensive than he didn't need to amend the Constitution.
