What tack will she take in her speeches I wonder? Truth and justice? Biased support of allies? Diplomatic feel-good nonsense?

I really can't say. I just wish it was going to be straight truth and justice for sure, and to hell with people's petty pride and little feelings.

AlternateUniverse : "TRUTH & JUSTICE" are 2 qualities that elude H. Clinton..............................Besdies, let's not forget that Japan is not the only country with which China is triggering territorials disputes - India, Viet Nam, Philippines, Indonesia , Tibet - to name a few others. ............Clinton needs to stop giving lip service to slogans of peace, while at the same time avoiding pin-pointing the real aggressor.

Notice how she didn't say whom the US believes the islands to belong to? Nor will they, because they can't risk getting China or SK upset, nor can they risk damaging ties with Japan given that the military presence here is already a thorny issue (although you haven't heard much from the anti-base, anti-US people since the island roes started!). Hopefully she can help bring about some talks, if nothing else, but otherwise I'm not sure what her stepping in will accomplish unless she exerts a lot of pressure in back room meetings.

It is really naive for someone who think US would really fight with China for Japanese interest, the Japanese politicians certainly don't believe that, they are just fooling the Japanese people in so believing. Actually, few people in US know about this issue , not to say they will risk their lives for the small rocks far away in a sovereignty dispute not on US and for which they don't even dare to take side. What US is doing is just to fish in the troubled water. US has all the benefits and China and Japan paid all the costs.

She should state that the US is officially dropping their objection to the 1956 Russa-Japan peace treaty, so then at least the Nemuro islands can be sorted out.

@efisher: It is really naive for someone who think US would really fight with China The fact is China has launched a new mobile ICBM capable of reaching the whole world with 10MIRVs on 24th July and there is another launching of SLBM on 16th August. The consecutive actions was definately no coincidences but telling many countries who were 'naives' enough to believe 'captain America' the sci-fi hero will comes to rescue!

US claims that they come to Asia for the benefits of Asian people. However, the hard fact is that the Asia is in deepening crisis. The economy will be adversely affected and Asian people will suffer. The US government just use the war crisis to enhance their employment rate for politicians' own benefit.

Japan is not the only country with which China is triggering territorials disputes

And Japan has territorial disputes with ALL her neighbors. Every last one! China just has more neighbors. China is dead center of Asia. Japan is just an island chain on the edge.

And China did not trigger all disputes. Everyone in these disputes holds some guilt. Anyone with an eye truth can see that. Anyone pointing fingers at only one has interest in the truth.

Clinton needs to stop giving lip service to slogans of peace

Slogans? Aside from some words, some trespassing, and some boats bumping into each other, there is peace! You have something against peace?

SemperFi, be always loyal to truth and peace, not governments and men.

Hillary Clinton has been a surprisingly good Secretary of State.

Serrano,

I agree. Madam Clinton has the right blend of diplomacy and straght talk. Of course she is going to try to walk a fine line and encourage everybody to play nice. Of course she does not want to make America's relations with China more difficult than they already are. But I am sure that in a quiet room away from the cameras (for now anyway) she is telling people that matter in no uncertain terms that the U.S. commtment to defending Japan is absolute .

Graham DeShazo said "Clinton is telling people that matter in no uncertain terms that the U.S. commtment to defending Japan is absolute ."

Yes, telling the fool to believe in that, but in fact it is just empty words. Actually, few people in US know about this issue , not to say they will risk their lives for the small rocks far away in a sovereignty dispute not on US and for which they don't even dare to take side.

Hillary Clinton has been a surprisingly good Secretary of State.

Maybe she is, but just for the Americans. What US is doing is just to fish in the troubled water. US has all the benefits and China and Japan paid all the costs. Moreover, the Americans may suffer for the imperialism policy pursued by their government.

The Secretary Clinton's last trip to Asia in her office... Finally...while what she did will be judged by history, it is undeniable that she did a good job in the interest of her country..some other jobs brought indeed disastrous fate for innocent civilians in many countries which will last for decades to come. She will be remembered by many.

Notice how she didn't say whom the US believes the islands to belong to?

Unlike former US Secretary of State; Rice, Clinton has been very diplomatic and encourage everyone ito be open for discussion and negotiation.. Rice always went to another countries and told them what to do. Remember the Bush Doctrine? What did we end up with? Two wars as results. I like Clinton's style in diplomacy. There is a good reason behind it.

How can territorial disputes ever be solved at the negotiation table I wonder, unless there is already utmost clarity at both ends on which side the territory has historically belonged to.

Bill Clinton's great relationships in Asia--including Japan, China and even North Korea, endures, and his wife also brings that diplomacy with her. It's hilarious the amount of 'advice' and urgency that's being dispensed here, midweek on an obscure Tokyo message board. For all the predictions, opinions, etc. there's no likely chance any of it will come true. Please focus on the facts and acknowledge some things! A lot of hack journalists and aggressive people here who need to go outside and perhaps not view world affairs as if it was easy as a RPG-style computer game.

...usually women get a lot done--the entire world that's run by power hungry, insecure men. Pretty much points out the majority of the causes of conflict.

Hillary has suffered a surprisingly humilation in Cambodia when there is a conference discussing 'code of conducts in south China sea' in July. No ASEAN countries has supported her proposal backing the Philipnes against China over the shoal of Scarborough

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

We don’t want to see the disputes in the South China Sea, or anywhere else, settled be intimidation, by force. We want to see them settled at the negotiating table,

China has launched a worldwide reaching capable ICBM on 24th July when the tough talks of south China sea goes heated, the bottom line is clear and that was used to negotiate on the negotiating table! It was America docking an aircraft carrier in HK at the same time threatening force at China from the begining
