Gemba acting like a US spokesman without knowing genba.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

related to the other jt story perhaps.... about US bases support by the region at large and not trusting china because of its track record, etc

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Is this meant to be ironic? So, Japan is also going to follow international rules? It takes two to tango.

Basically, China is only going to listen to China if everyone is dependent upon them for economic growth. That doesn't tell China to play by the rules.

If however countries and people would stop supporting communist China, and instead support economically other local struggling democracies that would be a better foreign policy since that matches mutual ideals. It doesn't mix.

Beijing Olympics 2008 was supported to help open up China, it has done the opposite. Countries should quietly support other nations with the same ideals, rather than a facade

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

china is making its own rules in everything. first, it copies and steals every idea on the market, and starts to develop its economy. this is their way. second, and scariest, it starts to make a grab for all the sea and territory it can get away with, backing it up with more and more weapons. nice, huh?

Is he jumping up and down and stomping his feet while saying this?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Japan can show the way by upholding its already pledged support for the Doha Development Round involving the reduction of tariffs and barriers on agricultural trade.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

As a FM, this is a good way to start your country working relationship with another country.

typical amateur japanese politican.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

The Foreign Minister of Japan is no amateur, Japan needs to explain its own policy, it must defend its own interests, it must also let China know that Okinawa will never be given to them, that sure too many US marines in Okinawa may be a pain in the proverbial ass, but imagine hundreds of thousands of off the wall Chinese soldiers who still have a grudge against Japan and want to try and should the entire world that China has come of age??? So, sure, Japan needs newly monied Chinese to come here on spending sprees but get back on the plane and when you have more $$$ come back to these islands, but not with your soldiers, not with guns, not with violence, just with a half decent smile and lots of $$$$.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

He sounds as a typical short term vision of Japanese politician. China has been exploiting the world with a smiling hand shake and another hand is ready to strike when needed. Japanese needs to to be strong and having clear principles to stand upon, rather than just looking for profit from China and using America and the world to backup. Most parts of the world will support Japan as she stands firm on core human value and less compromising on short term benefits. China 's policy of stirring the pot around the world for own sake is playing with fire. China has not much to offer the world; neither Communism nor open market Socialism. China is proud as the world's manufacturing workshop, but Chinese peoples want more than that. Be careful when playing with fire, for it will burns you unexpectedly.

Perhaps Japan ought to clean up it's own back yard and abide by international rules before they ask others to do the same. As for maintaining and/or improving ties, perhaps Japan ought to properly acknowledge history as a first step in making things better.

Anyway, the few Okinawans who put up a stink about the US bases have got to be pretty upset -- thanks to China more and more people are now accepting of said bases.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

There are a few countries who are envious of China's military expansion and always want to make sure that other countries are aware how dangerous China supposedly is. The same countries who complain about China are the same ones who want more space in Asian countries.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Perhaps Japan ought to clean up it's own back yard and abide by international rules before they ask others to do the same

smith, I am lost here. Maybe you know something I do not know.

Speaking about Okinawa, China may claim Okinawa as a part of China just like they are doing to Taiwan. I would not be too surprised.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

ExportExpert, thank you for the explanations. Understood.

Takahiro,

Yr first point PERFECTLY describes what Japan did starting in the 60s/70s, its the 2nd part regarding territory surrounding China that is the bigger concern

Globalwatcher youre welcome.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Japan has so many land and territorial disputes right now its ridiculous. If you are going to fight for those pieces of land or territory then let them go. I like how he just pushes the responsibility on to the rest of the world. Why should the rest of the world care about some water that nobody is benefiting from except japan. Then the guy throws in the talk about the US military, sounding like a threat, trying to flex muscles that JP doesn't have. If they just change their law about none aggression then a lot of this probably wouldnt be happening. The whole non aggression thing is cute and admirable, but they are just using it to make themselves seem better than the rest of the world. They can only do it because they are hiding under the UN banner and got so many US bases station here.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

globalwatcher: "smith, I am lost here. Maybe you know something I do not know."

You don't know about the white-washed history? not surprising, given the textbooks you likely learned from. How about the territorial disputes and the fact that Japan doesn't trust any of its Asian neighbours? Do I really need to spell out this and more to you?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Not surprised a bunch of JTers are complaining every time a Japanese politician expresses any kinf of opinion. What's the big deal about him telling China to follow rules? Japan does and they don't. @Asagao WW2 ? if a country can't have any opinion if they have done anything wrong in the past, no country can have any opinion. Japan did horrible things in the past. Now let's move on.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

NObody will takes Japnese FM remarks seriously! They want China to restrain her military spending?? Death wish!!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

i would be happy if china let the yuan be valued on the open market like almost all other currencies. a huge increased in the value of the yuan would promptly put an end to china's growth.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The Japanese government and public has learn a lesson after the trawler incident by recognizing who provides them the 'rare earth', it was definately constructive for eveyone! At least it was settle down in a 'gentlemen's way' fair and non-violences! The basic principle must be brought up by China to Japan: No recognizing Japanese law in the east China seas of the 'so called Senkaku isles'! This bottom line has got to be understood very clear! Otherwise next time an aircraft carrier group will be mobilized for the release of the captain!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Japan and China are extremely important and they should be good neighbors. He vowed to achieve “a win-win situation” .....How many people in both countries will take that seriously!? Mr Gemba is talking middle ages stories not modern. After the sino-Japanese war in 20th century, there was nothing left! A Chinese proverb was good to describe the situation: A mirror broken to be two pieces were two mirrors no matter how you clued it! People keep that in mind!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Ms Suzuki; It takes two to tango.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Nice comments Suzuki-san.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

He said Japan should not abandon its nuclear technology or exports of nuclear plants despite the crisis at the tsunami-devastated Fukushima Daiichi power plant and subsequent calls to reduce Japan’s reliance on nuclear energy. But he said pending nuclear deals with countries including Vietnam, Turkey and Jordan should be reviewed carefully as the ***investigation into the accident continues.

The last word...a so true to form. SLOWLY

smith, I understood. You are referring to WWII. There is nothing I can change what had happend in the past as well as you cannot change anything about Hiroshima.

Speaking about territorial disputes, each of them has a different issue involved and they are off topic. When time comes, I will share my view.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

in the interest of fair play and cooperation. china and japan have several islands that are in dispute they should just negotiate for the islands. china can take some and japan can take some, with clearly defined waters and exclusive economic zones. same should apply to all the disputed islands involved with russia, japan, china, skorea, nkorea, taiwan. a summit to settle the issue of who owns what is in order. most of the islands disputes aren't really about historical claims or repatriation of ethnic peoples to their country of origin. it is about fishing and carbon resource drilling rights.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

just-a-guy, I hope your country (China) is giving you the same access to other foreign correspondence for propaganda and you are getting paid for what you do. I am enjoying your posts.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

@sunhawk: No...those territorial disputes were two important issues: 1. oil, the east China sea natural resources underneath the seabed lies beyond the middle line at sea! Japan using the EEZ as an excuse to claim those natural resoucres not belongs to them! 2. Security issue: The US navy frequently using the east China sea as a platform for their aircraft carriers carry out attacks against Chinese coastal cities! If their presnts is a factor of stabilit, then why not Chinese navy vessels like submarines cannot possessing her presents over there, we are defending our cities not under attack! If the above two problems not solved, there will be no stability in east asia!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

What is the definition of 'play fair'? Means the respect of US military attacking China is all right but China is no way to make self defense? Was that a myth? If Japan feels China is an unstable factor to her security....that it was she started the war against China in the 20th century by her own from the begining!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

we all know china is a coutry that uses slave labour but if we boycotted chinese goods then would that not put a damper on them easiest solution is not to trade with them

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The new political system of conveyor belt PM's in Japan should be taken word for word by each and not just one man hahaha!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If Mr Gemba wants to see wether China is going to 'play fair' he can order the japanese coast guard to arrest a Chinese trawler or a 'survellience ship' sailing in Senkaku isles........see what next to be happen!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

China lives by one rule - look after its own interests, as defined by the communist party.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Unfortunately for Mr. Gemba, history dictates that China does not really understand (or intentionally ignores) the norms and logics of international rules and treaties...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

china is making its own rules in everything. first, it copies and steals every idea on the market, and starts to develop its economy..............

And the world gives her everything that they don't steal voluntarily in hope of cheap labor and skyrocketing profit and one they get surprised that their disciple proved to be a fast learner and overtook her master.

Sober voices shouted out "don't train China" only to meet deaf ears and the training of China, the transfer of high tech and dangerous tools is still going on, even when its dark side and the threat is clear.

China should play fair and Japan, as well as the world, should have played smart. Don't feed the bully. Too late, though.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

and one they get surprised = and one day, they get surprised

I have lived through the last cold war when the nuclear clock moved close to midnight. I certainly do not want my children and grandchildren to have to experience that awfull situation themselves. Each country has its own agenda in regards to its defence in order to deter assailants, but as far as i am concerned their investments may be better spent on healthcare, education and food production. If these nessassaties were to be catered for on a global basis then perhaps conflict and fear of your neighbour may be relegated to history, or maybe im a dreamer wishing for an ideal world

Japanese people workship the ideologies of 'Bushido' (the rules of knights) which was the major ideologies of Japanese society firmly believes for their wars! Bushido respects 'power ''force' all those using the strength anduse of power forcing others to believes what you believes! Simply saying: If you use force beating others crabbed up and you won the argument and that means you are right and you are very holy! Thats why we saw the japanese soldiers brutality over neighbouring countries including those atrocities done in China! It was very ironic that Japan can using 'Bushido' over others but others couldnt use 'Bushido' treating her! Was that very strange?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

china is making its own rules in everything. first, it copies and steals every idea on the market, and starts to develop its economy. this is their way.

No, actually this was Japn's way, and China is just simply doing a 21st Century version of it.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

This is a truth about this topic. I went and research this article in Forbes.com

If you want to manufacture products with rare earths, you will almost have to move to China.

That’s Beijing’s master plan. “If we can get Japan’s advanced manufacturing technology of magnetic materials in return, China welcomes Japanese companies shifting their downstream manufacturing of application products,” said Wang Guozhen, quoted on an official Chinese government website in a report on the important Showa Denko deal. The former vice chairman of the China Nonferrous Metals Engineering and Design Institute has clearly suggested that Beijing is using its control over rare earths to force companies to move their manufacturing to China.

Such gouging is a clear violation of China’s commitments as a member of the World Trade Organization.

Some emotions from Gemba is not good. China is the biggest creditor for USA. That know the all world and Gemba too.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

BessonovYan, American has nothing to worry from China, they can sequester the Chinese money. They can do this if China tries and use its bonds as a weapon. The Chinese do not honor their commitments and a cheap copy is always a CHEAP copy. It would be very good from a Japanese workers position if all trade would stop between China and Japan. Sure their will be pain but that always happens when giving a a damaging addiction.

TakahiroDomingoSep. 06, 2011 - 08:09AM JST. china is making its own rules in everything. first, it copies and steals every idea on the market, and starts to develop its economy.

Sounds exactly like what Japan did to U.S. in the 80's and the 90's. Didn't Japan steal every idea on the market and send 2,300,000 cars to U.S. and imported less than 10,000 U.S. cars and call it free trade? If these unfair practices are taken place by China, why do Japan have 20,000 companies there and bow to them? Why don't Japan pull out all the businesses if they have complaint?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

YuriOtaniSep. 07, 2011 - 06:18AM JST. It would be very good from a Japanese workers position if all trade would stop between China and Japan.

If Japan pulled out all the companies in China and freezes the bank account and completely halt the entire trade, the Japanese economy would collapse. And I mean collapse in a mass scale. You are talking about $200-$250 billion dollars in bilateral trade and over 20,000 Japanese companies that ship their products to Europe, North America, Australia and everywhere else. This adds up additional billions and billions of dollars.

China boosts GDP by cheating but that's how it does business. Why should China play fair when it doesn't have to? Blame the fools that allowed China to grow and spread their wings. Now see if you can contain this monster.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Back on topic please.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sounds exactly like what Japan did to U.S. in the 80's and the 90's

sfjp330, Well, I remember old days of Japan while the dollar exchange rate was 360 yen to $1.

Everyone who was travelling abroad for a pleasure with more than $500 had to get a special approval from the BOJ.. But everything changed when Japan agreed to the Plaza Accord and went to a currency floating system. In addition to this, Japan had to deal with a special US trade tariff called "The Super 360". Japan still survived. So I am confident that Japan will be able to pull herself out somehow.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Meh, the US will play fair only if it serves her interests.

Same with China.

Whoever thinks "playing fair" works, is a complete moron.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

China does not follow the rules and now our greedy corps are making us dependent upon them, just STUPID. If you want to indirectly help your profits, bring our jobs home. Without jobs the Japanese economy will continue to decline.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@YuriOtaniSep. 07, 2011 - 06:18AM JST

Chinas press wrote that China must use USA bonds as weapons for attack of USA economy. Are you sure that USA need conflict with China? Elite of USA don't want unstable situation in USA and lose USA country, because elite of USA will sell bonds to China for stable situation in USA. But China need hi-tech and USA now really start hi-tech relationship with China for long time.

You always wait attack from China to Japan. But it unreal. China need take hi-tech from Japan without military conflict. This is the biggest danger for Japan now. Because after lose hi-tech position in the world Japan have not any chance for some future. Japan will dead without war with China if Japan lose hi-tech positions in the world.

About diplomatic emotions Gemba.

I read book Hiroshi Odzawa "Kendo". In that book i was find words like to: "when you enter in dodzyo you must lose your relationship to all kendoka". Also in diplomatic between countries. Emotions is not actuality.

I hope that Gemba will read Hiroshi Odzawa and use it for own tasks.

"Japan should develop business-centered relations with China, while maintaining its security alliance with the U.S..." In a simple word, keep earning the Chinese money & keep hiding behind the big brother & accusing the Chinese of bullying. Nothing new as compared to the past Nth (fallen) cabinets. The Chinese are probably clever enough to bargain the political return of each single RMB poured into Japan ('s pocket ) that adopts increasingly a hostile attitude.
