Basically, China is only going to listen to China if everyone is dependent upon them for economic growth. That doesn't tell China to play by the rules.

If however countries and people would stop supporting communist China, and instead support economically other local struggling democracies that would be a better foreign policy since that matches mutual ideals. It doesn't mix.

Beijing Olympics 2008 was supported to help open up China, it has done the opposite. Countries should quietly support other nations with the same ideals, rather than a facade

The Foreign Minister of Japan is no amateur, Japan needs to explain its own policy, it must defend its own interests, it must also let China know that Okinawa will never be given to them, that sure too many US marines in Okinawa may be a pain in the proverbial ass, but imagine hundreds of thousands of off the wall Chinese soldiers who still have a grudge against Japan and want to try and should the entire world that China has come of age??? So, sure, Japan needs newly monied Chinese to come here on spending sprees but get back on the plane and when you have more $$$ come back to these islands, but not with your soldiers, not with guns, not with violence, just with a half decent smile and lots of $$$$.

He sounds as a typical short term vision of Japanese politician. China has been exploiting the world with a smiling hand shake and another hand is ready to strike when needed. Japanese needs to to be strong and having clear principles to stand upon, rather than just looking for profit from China and using America and the world to backup. Most parts of the world will support Japan as she stands firm on core human value and less compromising on short term benefits. Perhaps Japan ought to clean up it's own back yard and abide by international rules before they ask others to do the same. As for maintaining and/or improving ties, perhaps Japan ought to properly acknowledge history as a first step in making things better.

Anyway, the few Okinawans who put up a stink about the US bases have got to be pretty upset -- thanks to China more and more people are now accepting of said bases.

There are a few countries who are envious of China's military expansion and always want to make sure that other countries are aware how dangerous China supposedly is. The same countries who complain about China are the same ones who want more space in Asian countries.

Japan has so many land and territorial disputes right now its ridiculous. If you are going to fight for those pieces of land or territory then let them go. I like how he just pushes the responsibility on to the rest of the world. Why should the rest of the world care about some water that nobody is benefiting from except japan. Then the guy throws in the talk about the US military, sounding like a threat, trying to flex muscles that JP doesn't have. If they just change their law about none aggression then a lot of this probably wouldnt be happening. The whole non aggression thing is cute and admirable, but they are just using it to make themselves seem better than the rest of the world. The Japanese government and public has learn a lesson after the trawler incident by recognizing who provides them the 'rare earth', it was definately constructive for eveyone! smith, I understood. You are referring to WWII. There is nothing I can change what had happend in the past as well as you cannot change anything about Hiroshima.

Speaking about territorial disputes, each of them has a different issue involved and they are off topic. When time comes, I will share my view.

in the interest of fair play and cooperation. china and japan have several islands that are in dispute they should just negotiate for the islands. china can take some and japan can take some, with clearly defined waters and exclusive economic zones. same should apply to all the disputed islands involved with russia, japan, china, skorea, nkorea, taiwan. a summit to settle the issue of who owns what is in order. most of the islands disputes aren't really about historical claims or repatriation of ethnic peoples to their country of origin. it is about fishing and carbon resource drilling rights.

@sunhawk: No...those territorial disputes were two important issues: 1. oil, the east China sea natural resources underneath the seabed lies beyond the middle line at sea! Japan using the EEZ as an excuse to claim those natural resoucres not belongs to them! 2. Security issue: The US navy frequently using the east China sea as a platform for their aircraft carriers carry out attacks against Chinese coastal cities! If their presnts is a factor of stabilit, then why not Chinese navy vessels like submarines cannot possessing her presents over there, we are defending our cities not under attack! If the above two problems not solved, there will be no stability in east asia!

What is the definition of 'play fair'? Means the respect of US military attacking China is all right but China is no way to make self defense? Was that a myth? If Japan feels China is an unstable factor to her security....that it was she started the war against China in the 20th century by her own from the begining!

I have lived through the last cold war when the nuclear clock moved close to midnight. I certainly do not want my children and grandchildren to have to experience that awfull situation themselves. Each country has its own agenda in regards to its defence in order to deter assailants,but as far as i am concerned their investments may be better spent on healthcare, education and food production. If these nessassaties were to be catered for on a global basis then perhaps conflict and fear of your neighbour may be relegated to history, or maybe im a dreamer wishing for an ideal world

Japanese people workship the ideologies of 'Bushido' (the rules of knights) which was the major ideologies of Japanese society firmly believes for their wars! Bushido respects 'power ''force' all those using the strength anduse of power forcing others to believes what you believes! BessonovYan, American has nothing to worry from China, they can sequester the Chinese money. They can do this if China tries and use its bonds as a weapon. The Chinese do not honor their commitments and a cheap copy is always a CHEAP copy. It would be very good from a Japanese workers position if all trade would stop between China and Japan. Sure their will be pain but that always happens when giving a a damaging addiction.

Sounds exactly like what Japan did to U.S. in the 80's and the 90's. Didn't Japan steal every idea on the market and send 2,300,000 cars to U.S. and imported less than 10,000 U.S. cars and call it free trade? If these unfair practices are taken place by China, why do Japan have 20,000 companies there and bow to them? Why don't Japan pull out all the businesses if they have complaint?

If Japan pulled out all the companies in China and freezes the bank account and completely halt the entire trade, the Japanese economy would collapse. And I mean collapse in a mass scale. You are talking about $200-$250 billion dollars in bilateral trade and over 20,000 Japanese companies that ship their products to Europe, North America, Australia and everywhere else. This adds up additional billions and billions of dollars.

China boosts GDP by cheating but that's how it does business. Why should China play fair when it doesn't have to? Blame the fools that allowed China to grow and spread their wings. Now see if you can contain this monster.

Everyone who was travelling abroad for a pleasure with more than $500 had to get a special approval from the BOJ.. But everything changed when Japan agreed to the Plaza Accord and went to a currency floating system. In addition to this, Japan had to deal with a special US trade tariff called "The Super 360". Japan still survived. So I am confident that Japan will be able to pull herself out somehow.
