More tax money spent.

The two men, both right-wing nationalists and economic reformers

Correct on the first count. Abe couldn't reform a kitchen.

Next headline :

China, Pakistan to deepen ties to counter a more interventionist Japan and India.

This is counterproductive.

Japan India relations are going to attain new heights in coming days as there exists no upper limit for expanding our close strategic relations in various sectors of our economies. Both countries should set up joint R &D units to upgrade the existing technologies to the state of art level for our mutual benefits and produce cutting edge technology defense equipments to further strengthen and deepen our ties to promote stability and peace in the region.

Both Japan and India need to concentrate on fixing the large internal problems that both countries have instead of worrying about a China that neither one of them can do anything about no matter how much money they spend on their military.

Now that PH is out of the loop, Abe is trying to pull Modi inside his anti-China vortex.

Beijing could now see clearly Abe's trajectory of confrontation and any further attempt of false pretenses for talks by Japan is now moot and academic.

Zilch credibility.

Well, Abe couldn't get Duerte to call China the bogeyman of Asia, so I guess Abe's next step is to try and get India to do his dirty work. I have to agree with japan4life, sort out your own problems first. No use splashing money left, right and centre outside Japan just to get one up on China. China spends money on infrastructure in foreign countries because it can afford to.

Expect more countries show up and claim defending together against China. Japan should not reveal that it has stashed money to help countries in the world. Now India, then what? Japan might lose China as Japan's top business partnership.

US did most of the dirty job pushing back against communism in the 20th century in Asia, losing some wars and many lives in the course. Without that, much of the rest of Indochina other than Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and probably the Philippines too, would have fallen, not to speak of South Korea and Taiwan. Now it is time for Japan and India and others to step up to the plate, if just for their own sake.

If the dominos in Asia hadn't been propped up, I don't think we'd be looking at a democratic Japan 50 years later (such as it is).
