Man just hurry up and get on with it. China send your best pilot in your best plane, Japan do the same. Whoever wins that aerial battle takes the day and the islands!

What a good timing for SK to expand it's ADIZ! Lady Park Geun-hye is laughing loudly in her office now.

You want a war?

And to think that China kept saying that SK "understood" ......

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Korean ADIZ is totally different from Chinese ADIZ.

Civilian air crafts can travel freely in Korean ADIZ.

Civilian air crafts cannot travel through Chinese ADIZ unless Chinese government gives permission, although Chinese ADIZ is by no means Chinese territorial air which is limited to 12 nm from Chinese coast.

China has very strange notion of everything. They think they can expel foreign ships from their EEZ. Other countries think foreign ships can travel freely in EEZ unless the ships do fishing or other economic activities. Chinese EEZ is equivalent of territorial water in other countries. Chinese ADIZ is equivalent of territorial air in other countries. That is where the problem comes from.

So we go back in time to Gun Boat Diplomacy? Is this a prelude to WW III, or will this all blow over to be a fart in the breeze? I know that we feel the tinge of Great Nation Chauvinism and we can beat the stuffing out of these inferior Chinese; but who will pick up the tab for this skirmish? Wars and conflicts cost money and we still are paying for past wars, declared and undeclared? We are still bogged down in Afghanistan Iraq and soon to be involved in the ongoing crisis of the Philippines with the war against the insurgents there. I think if there is a war with China it will do us more harm than them; for it may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. There are many in the states that feel that we can kick but of anyone who opposes us on the planet. What is the purpose of the United Nations if not to settle such disputes from a civilized process? We still live in an era of barbarism; maybe some distant future we will experience what it really means to be civilized.

Are not the ANA/JAL planes flying in the area without contacting the Chinese authorities right now?

What does this mean? Park has taken a beating in SKorea politically because many feel that despite her China worship policy SKorea has been betrayed resulting in this ADIZ expansion. What is there to laugh about?

So are KAL and Asiana. I suspect the article is simply stating what China wants.

Japan & China should both relinquish control of Senkaku/Daiyou islands. They should give it to the UN be administered by them. The waters around the island would never be exploited for resources.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Just wait until South Korea extends its ADIZ to cover the islands Japan is claiming from South Korea. Let's see what Japan will say this time.

Besides of losing its influence and driving further apart of allies’ unity in this region, Japan under hawkish Abe’s admin is bearing the net loss in this high stake poker game of ADIZ.

For people who may not aware: there are some news for you to chew:

a. The insurance prime of two major Japanese Airlines which refused to submit their flying plans because Abe’s admin decided to sacrifice people’s safety for political gain is on the way to go up. In turn, those added costs would make these two major Japanese Airlines major airlines to lose their competitive edge. If I were you and if you own stocks of the two airlines, you may have to take a deep breath to think about how to protect your investment. :)

b. Abe’s Admin’s job approve rating is on the nose dive mission. Not too long ago after the election, the Admin’s job approve rating was 75%. But now coercing to pass the anti-democracy secrecy bill, showing incompetency of handling on-going Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis, plus pursuing the fruitless foreign policy have made Abe’s Admin’s job approve rating to go below 50 %. Here is the thing, if the rating goes down to 30 %, Abe’s Admin may lose the power within a year given available historical statistics.

So the conclusion is that it’s not too late yet for Abe’s admin to mend the fence and recharter the course, oh yeah forget about belligerent rhetoric.

No way. This is the govmernet fight. They want to be babies. They want to drag both ecomies down? They should fight! I say give Xi Jinping and Abe boxing gloves and put them in the ring. No rules. I am sure one of them will give up before the first punch whimpered towards their opponents face. This is how all wars should be fought. Just the two leaders. The two idiots who want to make everyone else suffer and pay.

Japan gives OK to S Korea's expanded air defense zone

Wow, what does Japan think it is? South Korea's relationship to Japan is not like Japan's to USA. South Korea doesn't need Japan to give "OK" to do this.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Truth hurts, I guess. Anyway, Japan has agreed to SK terms. Big surprise. I'm only surprised Dokdo wasn't included in the ADIZ. Guess they were seeking J-agreement after all.

Takeshima/Dokdo are already included in KADIZ when it was established by U.S. in the 50's.

How about Taiwanese planes flying through Japan's ADIZ? I mean, since we're talking about demanding permission and information and what not.

Can you elaborate, smith?

Wow, I guess you don't get it. Japan doesn't HAVE to give SKorea an OK, amd SKorea doesn't HAVE to ask Japan for an OPK> This is called cooperation between neighbors. Something that China doesn't understand.

SK has requested JP to discuss about ADIZ for many times but JP either rejected or neglected, however JP can't say anything this time because CN's ADIZ already overlapped JP's why bother one more overlapping from someone the US agreed?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

It would seem that SK and Japan are finally thinking that maybe the problem isn't history of WWII, it's China in the present day.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

@ gelendestrasse - BINGO! Took the words right off my fingertips mate.

Great, now all that's left is for Taiwan, The Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore to establish their ADIZ's.

Imagine all these ADIZ''s overlapping each other and every country sending Fighter Jets aloft every time someone fails to signal their IFF transponder signal or properly identify themselves.

And it's not a matter of "IF" but "WHEN" somebody is going to down an aircraft sending a pilot or an airbus filled with passengers into the sea.

I know it - I feel it in my bones and it's all going be Communist China's fault for starting this entire fiasco.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

"Continuing"...

And this has happended before and regrettably it was a U.S. Warship in the Persian Gulf - The USS Vincennes. It mistakingly downed an Iranian Airbus sending hundreds of passengers into their deaths. Not long before that, the USS Stark was mistakingly hit by an anti exocet missile fired from an Iraqi Mirage 2000 when the Starks Transponder was not recognized by the Iraqi pilot and he thought he was firing at an Iranian Frigate.

Anyway, both incidences ended up in the loss of human life and that is why these ADIZ's need to be carefully administered before sending up any aircraft or ordering warships to intercept an unidentified air or surface contact, because the result is always someone(s) losing their life.

@Ossan - Are you sure? It looks like Korea's new ADIZ announcement has proven you wrong, in regards to your past comments about Korea 'wanting to go back to being a vassal state of China'. So now you claim Park is being criticised for challenging China.. but you couldn't be more wrong.

How about you back it up with some articles? Because the articles I've come across have been in praise of her defiance to China (because there have been underlying fears that Korea would be the next target of China's territorial challenge, if they manage to get their way vs Japan).

To claim that Park is 'taking a beating' in Korea for standing up to China would be as accurate as saying Japan is largely in support of China's ADIZ.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Japan gives an OK, and despite their protest in front of the world press, China doesn't really mind and this won't have any effect on China-South Korea relationship, says the Chinese paper (according to Yahoo Japan's news headline quoting Record China who in turn quotes a Chinese newspaper).

I swear I learn more about Korea, from Japanese sites, than the Korean ones sometimes due to the sheer number of Korea related subjects becoming top news discussion item in Japanese portal sites. Once again yesterday, Korean news dominated Yahoo Japan.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Japan "OKs" Korea's air defense? Really? I think Korea's plan is OK without Japan's approval. Might be a 2nd language thing here.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Japan gives an "OK" on Korea's new ADIZ, so what's the problem ares7?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Good to see intelligent cooperation and mutual respect displayed here, China should take notes. This is how such matters are conducted and proceed.

As for the chatter here it is amusing. Osan America has my support, and it is clear that reality has no real impact on supporters of China any more than it does on China itself. Otherwise the fantasies quoted and stated about how China has any right to invade and conquer neighboring territories would not even be typed or shared.

In time, reality will prevail. I guess China is just still about 70 years behind the times.

Yes I am sure. I watched MBC with a Korean friend and Park was indeed under pressure politically for having cozied up to China so much and yet China's ADIZ covered Ieodo. SKorea's new ADIZ expansion is the result and designed to ensure that China will not encroach on Ieodo. China's ADIZ has changed Park's position and that is what you are reading about "standing up to China". Your comments are a week late. If you can read Korean then you will find my statements correct on Korean news sites.

Ossanamerica and Mitch Cohen, I pay attention to both Korean and Japanese medias on a daily basis, and I can assure you there's no political pressure against Park for 'cozying up to the Chinese' too much. There is indeed an anti-Park coalition in South Korean politics, pressuring her to resign as the president, for the Korean secret intelligence agency accused of writing thousands of anonymous twitter comments in support of Park during the elections. But they have nothing to do with accusing her of 'cozying up to the Chinese". Really, for people in Korea, this ADIZ thing is not really a big concern for average people who are more fixated on domestic concerns.

What's reported in Japan, on the other hand, is quite different. The Japanese media is full of, may I say, wishful thinkings that Park is in trouble because of her supposed 'anti Japanese and pro Chinese" attitude. There doesn't a day go by that the Japanese media isn't reporting on how South Korea is about to collapse because Japan is going to punish Korea for being 'rebellious' against Japan, and supposedly going all over the world to spread the anti-Japanese sentiments. If Japanese want to be allied with South Korea regarding the Chinese threat, it's a funny way to show this, with calling on economic sanctions and boycotts against South Korea to make it go belly up. I guess we all have fantasies left unfulfilled, but whatever.

chucky3176Dec. 10, 2013 - 09:03AM JST I can assure you there's no political pressure against Park for 'cozying up to the Chinese' too much.

There is pressure on the politicians in SK for diplomacy since they depend on China for their economy. Who are you kidding when China accounts for 25 percent of total exports and 16 percent of total imports and it's increasing? Trade with Japan has dropped fifity percent in the last decade, so where do you think South Korea's politicians and industry is focusing on?

Regardless of whether you "trust me" or not, the fact remains that SKorea was concerned about Ieodo, They expanded their ADIZ, the SKorean Military as well as their commercial carriers KAL and Asiana do not recognize or comply with China's ADIZ requirements. You can "trust" these factual event and reach your own conclusions about where Sino-Korean coziness has headed.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

sfjp330, I think you're talking about a different matter. I am talking about Ossanamerica's comment that Park is under domestic pressure for 'cozying up too closely to the Chinese", when there's little evidence that she's under attack for that. Of course, S.Korea is under pressure to keep a friendly relations with China as much as possible due to the dependence on China's economy AS WELL AS needing China to keep a muzzle on North Korea. And as you pointed out, the trade with Japan has significantly declined, so there's less importance put on relations with Japan, compared to China and United States. Anyway, South Korea's move is supported by the US state department as well, and the responses from the Chinese have been fairly tame.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/08/us-korea-china-air-idUSBRE9B703M20131208

I think both the Chinese and Japanese would rather have South Korea on their sides, to beef up their own positions, thus the fairly muted responses...especially the Chinese who find themselves isolated in the world.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I would say, because China`s ADIZ covered territory claimed by Japan. For that matter, that also includes Okinawa, forcibly annexed in the late 1870s
