It was the first time Japan, the only country to have suffered a nuclear attack, had concluded such a pact with a country that is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Which has to do "what" with the article here? This is an announcement of a civilian contract right?

Yubaru: Which has to do "what" with the article here? This is an announcement of a civilian contract right?

Really? How'd that non-proliferation wheat-for-peaceful-nukes thing go with the North Koreans?

“As a sole nation to have been nuclear-bombed, we bear the responsibility for leading the international community toward the realisation of a world without nuclear weapons,” Abe told the same news conference.

So, how does that square with rewarding a country that is not a signatory to the NPT with nuclear contracts and petitioning the US not to abandon a no-first strike policy and not signing up to the recent initiative in the UN to give up nuclear weapons? I think Abe has not considered how this looks abroad. Some may see it is a total hypocrisy. Give up the propaganda and imaginary leadership (Abe's favourite fantasy) if you want the money.

The three festering meltdowns at Fukushima are more pertinent than the bombs.

Now India can have its own set of disasters.

@Yubaru if the govt says it is for civilian purposes, do you really believe this? Selling nuclear weapon grade materials to a nuclear armed country, with a conflict dogged history, not a member of the NPT...sounds like illegal arms dealing. Toshiba and Mitsubishi Heavy are rumored to have connections to the govt, but that would never be factor of course.

Japan, the only country to have suffered a nuclear attack,

Is there anyone who has forgotten this? No? Then why do they keep reminding us. Because they love to play the victim

the only country to have suffered a nuclear attack,

if I could have had a dollar for every time that has been written.

Utter hypocrisy and weasel double-talk from the mug Abe. Toshiba, Westinghouse and JR must have built the world's biggest ever brown paper envelope to seal this deal. Frightening.

Actually it's the press and media that keeps playing it up as well. Let the government do that on their own, the media does not need to help.

“In Japan, the era of high economic growth began when shinkansen started its service in 1964. I hope the advent of high-speed railway will trigger fresh economic growth in India as well,” Abe said. This is the funniest thing that I've heard for ages!! the thought of India with a high speed rail link, well can you imagine it? two wheels will be missing, it will have wooden block for brakes because the proper ones cost to much,it will never run on time, it could be a day late, never mind two minutes, and where to the cling on to on the out side at 200 mph?? and the line is electrified? well what about the people that stand on the top of the carriages, won't the get electrified? can it make previsions for stopping the train quickly because there are cows on the line? ooooh dear! this has made me smile this morning!!

They won't be getting weapons grade uranium, Nincompoop.

Now India can have its own set of disasters.

Why? are they going to install a 50 year old facility? I would've thought they'd be getting the latest technology.
