This is one of Trump's appointees who I think is a very respectable man and I believe there will be little resistance to his confirmation. He was known as a man who led "from the trenches" rather than from an ivory tower. He is well respected by those that served under him.

Not sure about his other appointees/nominees but this one is a very good choice and I think he will be an improvement over Ash Carter.

Trump seemed genuinely aroused when he announced Mad Dog Mattis' appointment:

The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some ***holes in the world that just need to be shot

“I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you **** with me, I’ll kill you all.”

Where can we get rabies shots?

This will be interesting. South Korea and Japan better have the red carpet rolled out and the leaders grabbing their ankles. Abe already has volunteered to start kissing Trump's butt and hoping to be the exception to Trump policies, but we'll see how far he goes. As for South Korea... do they even have a leader at the moment? They're in a slightly better position in that no matter what has been promised in the past they are a little flexible as to what they can offer now, blaming past politicians or policies for this and that, or saying they can't commit 100% until the next president is sworn in, etc. Abe foolishly made his schedule to meet Clinton before the election occurred, though he's done a good job backtracking.

ALL countries should abide by Law of Seas in South China Sea to keep all tensions away and maintain durable peace in the region.

As a Japanese, the only thing I'm worried about is, when Secretary Mattis and Japan's Minister of Defense Inada stand together and pictured, Inada would look like Mattis's granddaughter from high school. or even grand grand daughter from elementary school.

I know it's not polite to talk about things like this but I honestly hope Inada considers her outfit and hair style so that to look like a minister. She is often more like AKB48.

The way Abe was talking I expected him to already have been to the White House and back by now. I guess Abe and the LDP's long distance attempt at "educating" Trump on what is best for Japan and the US alliance never reached Trump's ears.....

could be seen as a nod to the importance the new U.S. administration places on security ties.

Or maybe Trump is sending this guy as a bill collector, from all the rhetoric during the campaign, who knows.

What will occur when 'Mad Dog' & 'Chicken Hawk' meet?

I wonder what Mattis thinks of Inada's visits to Yasukuni.

A very realistic and timely move by Trump and Mattis. The threat is bigger from China than from ISIL for world stability (not necessarily peace). China is the most unpredictable entity in the world as it dominates the basic life giving natural resources and exports necessities such as food and clothing and sundries to the world actually"intimidating" and "daring" the rest of the world to stop their (China's) desire for world dominance. (China is the largest producer and exporter, twice as much as the USA, according to 2015 statistics in the https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2078rank.html other than the EU.)

ISIL is recognized as a major danger and problem and the entire world (at least those that are actually participating) is aware and willing to deal with it. China is not yet recognized as a world threat yet. Yet China is the most aggressive of all nations in the world economically, militarily and otherwise, taking advantage as well as forcibly and underhandedly "occupying" territories in the form of new China towns occupied by newly introduced Chinese all over the world.

@sea20: there was no report what Inada did in any news in past. I think you are the only one here about yasukuni.

seanwd20Jan. 25, 2017 - 09:52PM JST I wonder what Mattis thinks of Inada's visits to Yasukuni.

Probably nothing. USMC Lt. General Wallace Gregson, commander of the 3rd Marine Division visited Yasukui on April 26, 2001. Marines have better things to think about. https://www.stripes.com/news/top-marine-in-japan-if-tasked-we-could-retake-the-senkakus-from-china-1.277555

This guy is awesome and I am sure that he will work with South Korea and Japan and no one will need to bend over as per smithinchina's comment above.

U.S. defense chief James Mattis visit to Japan, S Korea could have come at a more crucially important time.

Prime Minister Abe, and Minister of Defense Tomomi Inada must seize this valuable early opportunity to fully convey the realities of the security and geopolitical implications of the Government of China ever growing threatened use of armed force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of it neighbors in the South and East China Sea.

The threat having an increasingly negative impact on the continued stability of international trading routes vital to the US economy. At the same time stressing the Government of China continued infringement of international law.

Prime Minister Abe, and Minister of Defense Tomomi Inada must also strenuously highlight the Government and people of Japan continued support and willingness to provide forward bases for US forces to mount tactical and strategic operations at considerable risk to retaliatory action. And finally the Government of Japans willingness to action huge financial commitment both in logistically and in the procurement of weapons and equipment.
