How should the international community react to China's declaration of an air defense zone that requires airlines to submit their flight plans in advance?

America has the same type of proclomations in effect. America, acting on behalf of China, complaining of China's proclomation is like the pot calling the kettle black.

It is simple. China is the economic powerhouse of the future. America is insolvent. Japan is insolvent. They can posture all they want, but both countries continual deficits and enormously out-of-balance debt loads will help tip the scales toward China in this conflict.

Every day that America and Japan spend more money than they can afford, they become weaker than countries like China. You cant change reality. Abe is a threat to the prosperity of Japan, as is every big government politician.

It's like training a dog. You don't react, turn your back and walk away. You give it's bad behavior any attention and it will take that positive or negative reinforcement and strengthen their anti social behavior.

I'm sorry, what? Nothing of the kind buddy. The U.S does not require the same of foreign aircraft as does the PRC regarding this East China Sea ADIZ. The US, and most other nations that have declared ADIZs, require aircraft destined for U.S. airports and those that will actually fly through U.S. national/territorial airspace en route elsewhere to file flight plans in advance and check in with U.S. ATC. This is the standard. China goes far beyond this by also requiring aircraft that are NOT destined for a Chinese airport and only transiting through the ADIZ without ever entering Chinese national/territorial airspace to file flight plans and be under the control of Chinese ATC. And as if that wasn't enough, they have threatened military force if an aircraft doesn't comply. You can fly around in a U.S. ADIZ all day, and although you may be queried as to your identity and intention and be even categorized as a threat depending on what you're doing, no action is going to be taken against you until you actually enter U.S. airspace, which is 12 nautical miles out from land and inside of the ADIZ. Airspace in any ADIZ is uncontrolled international airspace and these latest requirements by China completely run counter to the convention of freedom of the skies around the world, particularly for commercial aviation. What China is doing is treating a large swath of international airspace as its own territorial airspace and exerting controls over aircraft in the area which it does not have the right to require or enforce. There is an ocean of difference between the U.S.' enforcement of its ADIZs and China's. You couldn't be more wrong.

I'm guessing the current 10% that voted to comply with China's BS air defense zone must either be completely clueless or Chinese Government supporters which sadly equates to the same thing. You can't fix stupid no matter how much money you throw at it.

They need to be pushed back, not ignored, this is just beginning to make invasion of chinese army onto those island, and after that, they will make again new air soon that come to the okinawa , and when they have all island around Japan , they will eventually settle down, or even maybe even try to attack Japan main island, of course, this all will work under one thing , and thats, that America withdraw from Japan , and, there is huge posilbility that they will do that,on one way or another, Americans will find a way how to get out of this situation .They will let China finish Japan , and then they will come in some sort humanitarian aid . American dont need strong Asia ( specially they dont need strong Japan ) , they think that region is too much at peace, they need Asia burning in war , so that American economy can get back .

USNinjapan2,

Regarding U.S. territory, America requires the same as does China. Dont play games and pretend to think I was talking about America requiring nations in south east Asia to alert when flying through south east asian regions.

Why should China not defend its 'interests', as America routinely does in its own backyard? Is America the world's parents? Where does America gets its money to pay for its stuff, by the way? Take a guess - China! China is America's biggest creditor. Who do you think really holds the power in the region? You guessed right, I hope - China!

No. We do not. The US has designated ADIZs surrounding sovereign US territory. It requires flights inbound through the ADIZ to US destination to file flight plans and are controlled by US ATC . Also flights that actually fly threw US national airspace without landing in the US on their way to another country are required to file flight plans and are controlled by US ATC. This is what almost every other country in the world does with their own ADIZs. This is where the similarity with all other nations and China ends because on top of what I just listed above, China also requires flights that are merely passing through their ADIZ, which they have no ATC authority over because it's international airspace, to also file flight plans and submit to Chinese ATC control under threat of military force. If a flight is not inbound to a Chinese destination and is not going to physically pass through sovereign Chinese airspace the Chinese should have no business exerting any authority over it whatsoever. It's the equivalent of a homeowner treating the public sidewalk and street in front of his house as if it's his private property. It's simply not permissible. There's no simpler way to explain this.

Dont play games and pretend to think I was talking about America requiring nations in south east Asia to alert when flying through south east asian regions.

No games. Nothing of the kind. I'm merely trying to explain the stark difference between how normal nations act in their ADIZs and what China has recently announced. I don't know know why you keep insisting that they are the same.

Yes, that's it, the best trait of the CCP ... is to go blame everyone else and try to pass off themselves as the moral protectors of the world.

Is that all you sick people can do? Blame someone else YET COMMIT THE SAME ACTS? Is this what you so-called Chinese call "aiguo wuzui"? ...patriotism?

Dragging other people into your dispute, you are no better than those whom you accuse. "You are with us, or against us."

Your justifications are weak and pathetic, like a petulant child who blames everyone else for the consequences of their own actions.

And, no, I am not Japanese, nor American, but Chinese.

China is even arrogant enough to tell another sovereign country that their choice of friends and allies is "violating China's sovereignty". This by far is the most ludicrous yet outrageous example of Chinese arrogance, hypocrisy and double standards.

YET YOU WHINE ABOUT AMERICA BEING BAD FOR THESE SAME THINGS.

Sorry USNinjapan2, not directed to you. This site needs a better quote feature :(

China needs to calm down and change its course ,giving up greed, irrational aggression towards its many neighbors...it should live in peace like other Asian nations. If it continues this current aggressive path , soon war will explode in the region with China against the rest...and the outcome won't be pretty at all for China. I hate to think fighting against China because if you lose you will get chinese all over your country, and if you win you still get chinese all over your country. Simply there are too many of them.

I see why your name is "ex" Japan-vistor.

Mate China is like a ballon, we are the air inside. If we leave, what happens to the ballon?

I hope you understand :)

Even Taiwan is now becoming wary of China's self-declared ADZ because if China could do so at it pleases on the East China Sea, what's to stop China from doing the same on the South China Sea, where Taiwan controls some islands that China wants to claim control.

This poll is poorly framed, nullifying the results. Online polls are generally pointless, as there is no means to have an even distribution of samples: only people that care enough to reply do so, meaning that the sample is limited to people who are invested enough to answer. That will skew results one way or another. However, this poll is junk based on the question alone.

Clearly, there is a difference between civilian and military aircraft. Civilian aircraft must identify themselves when entering airspace where failure to do so can result in military action. Several civilian aircraft have been lost due to entering airspace that brought military response due to this confusion. In the case of the new China ADIZ, military flights like those by the USA, Japan and South Korea have the option to refuse to comply. Civilian airliners do not have any option but to ID themselves.
