Despite all the Japanese assurances that there is no danger from the Fukushima disaster I would hope that the IOC get independent, third party confirmation that there is absolutely no danger. We all know how much you can count on Japanese assurances.

Tokyo for the Win.

Anywhere but Tokyo. TOO MANY people here. No thank you!

What if Tokai earthquake occurred and hit Tokyo in 2020?

3 ( +5 / -3 )

it's money game and we know Japan's printing press is in full swing, IOC has nothing on mind but Tokyo.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

It's likely that Tokyo will win its bid. I'd hate this to happen, but the Olympics is just about big business. Mark my words, I guarantee you there will still be people in Tohoku living in tents at the time of the games in Tokyo. Disgusting.

I voted for Tokyo, because if the mere fact of hosting the Games doesn't spur J Gov to clean up Tohoku, international pressure will shame them into it.

While it's seen largely as a morale-boosting measure, I've been reading articles in the Japanese press that the government might also take advantage of the big influx of foreign visitors to time the 2020 Olympics to the start of legalized casino gambling, in the hope that visitors would leave lots of money behind.

Despite all the Japanese assurances that there is no danger from the Fukushima disaster

Excuse me. Did any Japanese say Fukushima is safe? Most Japanese think it unsafe. Even the government or TEPCO think it unsafe.

I went with Madrid, they have promised to reuse the facilities they have, it will be a great boom for the Euro economy. I'm not with Tokyo on this because it perpetuates this thinking that 'As long is Tokyo is ok, Japan is ok'. Tohoku is still in shambles, radiation leaks out to sea have been confirmed, and Japan has continued to refuse international intervention. You include all the gaffes by the Japan's prominent politicians, and it becomes really easy to question how 'international' Japan is?

Istanbul.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Madrid . Tokyo is faceing the nuclear crisis. Istanbul is nearing the war.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I hope Tokyo gets it, because I live in Japan and want to go! Also it will put pressure on the Japanese government to sort out the nuclear problem properly and maybe do more in Tohoku. Just because there are people still living in tents doesn't mean Japan shouldn't get the Olympics. Such an event raises everyone's spirits and brings more awareness to the country's problems anyway. No-one said Brazil shouldn't get the World Cup because millions live in poverty.People always say the money could be better spent, but you can argue that wherever it's held: Spain is in financial crisis, Turkey is politically volatile...blah..blah. Where do you recommend then, Qatar?

Get Real:

I voted for Tokyo, because if the mere fact of hosting the Games doesn't spur J Gov to clean up Tohoku, international pressure will shame them into it.

Get Real

Egg landed on Japan's face ages ago.

These votes aren't biased at all... being on a japnese news site n all

Honestly people, this is a no-brainer. Tokyo has the security, it has the funds, it has the infrastructure. Why are we even talking about Istanbul (just a hop skip and a jump from your nearest Terrorists R Us) or Spain (who definitely can't afford the massive public works necessary for the games... plus the massive debt afterwards as those fancy stadiums accumulate dust).

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@Frungy

Spain (who definitely can't afford the massive public works necessary for the games...

...and this is different from Japan because... ??? Just because Japan is busy using it's printing presses doesn't mean it REALLY has the money - especially since the money they have received from foreign nations has all but completely "disappeared"... Take care of the people of Tohoku FIRST ! If you can afford to set up the Olympics, surely you can afford to set up decent housing and relocate all those still suffering from the earthquake and tsunami...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

All three of those cities aren't good choices I'm afraid!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

So where do you recommend Yokatta?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

On a purely selfish level - Tokyo. It's the only one that is in a decent time zone for viewing the Olympics! (here or my homeland).

You never know, I might even pop up to Tokyo to watch a bit of it live.

Spain is broke and Turkey already shot their goose. Tokyo with it's baggage is still the "safest" bet among the three. The IOC are already regretting Rio, the headaches are non stop........

This is not the time for Japan to spending money and energy on the Olympics, the dangers of Fukushima aside. Don't think the Olympics will spur the Japanese government to do more for Tohoku. The opposite will happen. They'll do their best to shut out Tohoku and Fukushima, just as they will any homeless people still visible in Tokyo.
