Being as how the only beef I can afford and that is available or served in restaurants and supermarkets in Japan is Australian, I'd have to go with Australian.

Hmm, I couldn't really tell myself. I've yet to have steaks from other countries and I don't count Mcdonalds burgers as a good sample of beef from other countries. I"ve had some beef dishes in Hong Kong, and some in Germany, all were good because the chefs were good.

Too bad there isn't a "Don't know" choice.

I eatead american, ausie, japanese, brazilian and argentine beef. Sadly, I dont tried canadian yet. If we talk about who produce the tastiest I think that is the argentine beef for export to luxury restaurants. But if we talk about what is going to eat the majority of the world, is the cheaper low quality meat from feedlots. No matter what some people say about fat, I dont like fat on my beef. In my opinion fat is for minced meat in the hamburgers.

Japanese beef yes. but I go for value. If I'm making chili I'm not going to pay an arm and a leg for it. Japanese beef is good if you only have it once in a while. but I7ve had great American beef and paid less than half the price.

Japanese beef if good if you pay for it. Just try going to Imahan and you'll know what I mean. Haven't tried Argentinian. Is it affordable?

With the exception of wago beef isn't it all pretty much the same? Why not get a bunch of foodies and have a taste test? I'll be they can't tell the difference between the same cuts of beef from different countries.

How can this poll exclude Argentinian beef. I can only infer that the Japanese do not have access to the best beef in the world. (I was once a meat eater and am in the know)

Seeing I live in Japan I will stick with what is generally available here:

In order (if I could afford it) "Matsusaka beef" followed by Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and very far down USA.

I generally stick with Australia for price and taste, I can get an eight kilo chilled block vacuumed sealed for about 700 yen per kilo, cut and trim it myself gives me enough ground beef, steaks and stew meat for my family for one and a half to two months.

OK, thats about $3.00 per pound yer paying there. I'm paying anywhere between $1.99 and $0.99 a pound here from my local market- and they do the cutting and packaging for me- and I often ask the butcher to thin slice 1/2 my butcher block for sukiyaki ! The rest is cut into steaks for the BBQ - Now thats livin' !

Absolutely it has to be Australia for taste, quality and value. And get this - we have never had an issue of BSE - safety is NOT a problem! Can't afford Japanese beef - but generally people like it because it is very fatty (marbled) - so the locals who eat it are not so healthy. The Kiwis produce limited amounts of beef - but stick to whay they do best: Lamb. Aussie Beef: Safest and Tastiest in the world.

Highly subjective, of course, but, when all is considered, I have to say American. Japanese is pretty good but I don't think it can match prices with American beef and is sometimes TOO soft. Yes, that IS possible. Unlike some Japanese I know (mostly women), I don't think every cut needs to be melt-in-your-mouth soft. I like a thick juicy cut that has a slight toughness to it but is easily chewed. Australian is also good but I generally stick to my favorite.

I tend to agree ! Aussie beef is fine for a quick flip on the barby but the fact is the fat content is way too low- fat is where the flavor molocules are found people, if your beef is too lean, well it has little flavor. US beef has excellent marbeling providing for an excellent burger when ground. Try that with Aussie beef and you'll find that it falls apart on the grill- thats why a lot of Aussie beef is mixed with Canadian pork- to add fat to the mix ! Nothing wrong with Aussie beef- but no way does it compare with US beef- especially as a patty on a grill !

Nope- it's common knowledge that I now reside stateside ! Explains my rather positive outlook on life ! Sorry limbo- the days for me paying such ridiculous prices for beef and other food products is long over. $1.99 a pound (450 yen a kilo) for meat products is the norm here- not the exception. We even did a Easter ham for .99 cents a pound- it was amazing ! But lets stay on topic shall we- US remains the safest, best tasting beef out there- provided your butcher nows what he's looking for. Enjoy !

How many of you out there have had beef from all 5 of those countries. If not you can't really make any sort of comparison. I am just stating the facts here: MOST (not all, but most) of the people who take this poll live in the USA or Japan (and have never had beef from the other countries). so its going to be biased towards those two countries.

I've had US, Japanese, and Aussie beef. Maybe others but I wasn't aware at the time. Aussie beef isn't too bad, Japanese beef is good, but US beef has the most robust taste.

Saga gyu, Oumi gyu, Yonezawa gyu, Morioka Tankaku gyu, Matsuzaka gyu, Ishigaki gyu... they all rule. Great shabu shabu's!!

I am American but can not with a clear head say that US beef tastes better than Japanese. Nothing like watching Sazae-san on a Sunday night eating some Kobe beef with a Kirin. Yummy!

I like Brazilian beef, next Australian and Japanese. Don't know about Canadian. It appears to me that US beef lacks taste, and they try to make up for it with heavy sauces which spoil the dish. Good beef only needs a bit of salt.

Agree with you there Farmboy. I mean you have to consider where the cattle was raised, what it was fed, and lastly what cuts you get from it. In the US I know we have so many types of cattle and climates and habitats for them to be raised it affects them in many ways. Cutting it down to nationality is kind of over simplifying the situation.

I believe Highland beef is the best. -ask for it. The best highland beef comes from the higher elevations like Argentina/Andes but Scotland is the original. Mongolian/North China beef is #2. Mongols know their beef (don't confuse this with the cheap "Mongolian style/beef" restaurants.) 3. Organic Hokkaido beef maybe #3 depending on the farmer.

For region I would say Mongolia/North China is #1 in beef -by far. -These people know their animals and have for a long/long time.

Highland beef is #1 (Scotland/Andes). Mongolian/North China Beef is #2. Hokkaido organic #3.

Tastiest does not neccessarily means healthiest or best for you. Combination of "fat and sugar" (like ice cream) or fat and salt (on beef) always taste good but harm you , because you will easily eat too much of them.

how to know a little of the subject, I know that Brazilian beef is, for one simple reason. The only Brazilian cow eats grass, while in other alternatives cows also eat feed made from the carcass of dead cows. Savable cows eats leaves!

-Beef should be fresh that day. Those bubble packs have a gas in them (reason for the bubble). -All the more reason not to import beef or do the processing in Japan.

The way Americans treat their produce it comes at no surprise that the taste is bad, the marble quality is poor, and the inspiration to eat it is low low low. I prefer chimp meat to American beef.

liammorimoto has a beef with US beef. Marbled meat isn't always the best. Well to each his own though, I prefer something with more meat than fat and something that tastes like beef instead of bacon. Steak is steak here. If you want marbled, corned beef is good as well as other meat produce here that shows it's marbled.

One thing I love about my beef in the US is that there are so many options its ridiculous. Plus its affordable and still tastes great depending on who cooks it, what cut it is, and where the cow was raised. Some are organically fed, others come from feed lots, etc. One has to keep in mind the US has large land mass, has to produce beef DAILY for millions of people not only in the US but abroad.
