If subway freight trains serve as a substitute for trucks in central Tokyo, where there is a high demand for delivery services, it will alleviate the growing shortage of truck drivers.

A transport ministry official. He was referring to a feasibility study to be conducted on Tokyo Metro's Yurakucho Line and Tobu Railway's Tobu Tojo Line, which links up with the Yurakucho Line, on shipping parcels via the Tokyo subway system. (Asahi Shimbun)

If the businesses paid truck drivers a wage in line with a developed economy and offered benefits and other inducements, it will alleviate the growing shortage of truck drivers.

Did not no there was a shortage. I guess a lot of people getting in overtime.

Not so sure about this being useful due to a shortage of drivers as they are going to need people, LOTS of them, to move stuff on/off trains/subways & guess what they will need trucks to around at both ends.............

Too words: drones.

Drones..............BAD idea, there is no way drones are going take on what is carried by TRUCKS, think about it, very bad idea

JeffLee has posted the heart of the problem: pay.

The U.S. is also having trouble finding enough truck drivers and for the same reason: it no longer pays enough and the industry treats drivers very bad in general.

I was joking about the drones. First, since one landed on Abe's roof, the gov't wants to ban them (except when the gov't wants to use them to do surveillance). Second, Two (2) words, then only used one.

But, as GW says, it's a bad idea. Imagine 1000 drones delivering Cup Noodles to convenience stores. Brrr.

I have no idea how subway freight could be economically feasible, the loading logistics would be a nightmare, plus would be extremely inflexible on the routes.. Drones are an option, but would only be final leg delivery. Having logistics centers on the outskirts and then using rail freight is feasible, however rail freight does not fit the just-in-time delivery model for most modern delivery services
