The top issue is being able to invest without the financial industry taking the bulk of your returns as "fees" or selling you products with hefty upfront commissions.
A couple of IFAs have tried these shenanigans on me, and it made me realize how few consumer protections and transparency there are in this largely sleazy industry.
NISAs are good, because they're backed and overseen by the government.

Lazy 'investor' here, opted for peace of mind and flexibility rather than quick $. Could probably have done better but ING's term deposit products suit me ok.
Missing their pre GFC interest rates though.

@kibousha, teach the kids to avoid investment scams so they can lecture mom not to go to these free seminars run by dad's company? Something is backwards in this equation.
