Love this guy, but he still needs an interpreter after four seasons in MLB ? Wow ! Congrats to Pudgy (Ivan Rodriguez) on his induction to the BHOF !

I think Ichiro used a translator until the end didn't he?

I can understand it actually. If I were in a position like that, even though I speak Japanese, I may still use a translator. For public things like that, you want to make sure that your words either can't be mistaken, or that if they are you can blame someone else for the mistake.

He's 30 already? Wow, time flies. Only seems like yesterday when he left Japan. Has he also lost some weight? He seems a bit slimmer.

I hope he can have a great season !

Good point, @Strangerland.

He's been a good pitcher, but hardly worth the amount of money as per the contract.

I don't know why these teams continue to throw large amounts of money at Japanese pitchers, most of whom never lived up to the hype.

We are in agreement here. There are even some who don't get huge contracts but do a much better job.

Strangerland: "For public things like that, you want to make sure that your words either can't be mistaken, or that if they are you can blame someone else for the mistake."

I think people have a lot more respect for those who try, even if they make simple mistakes. It's not like it was the contract negotiation itself, where a small misunderstanding could make or break a deal -- it was a meeting to express his desire to try and live up to the massive praise and money he's gotten. In the case of Ichiro, he said flat out from the beginning he would refuse to learn or use English and that his "wife would do it (for him)". It was the pure arrogance he is quite while known for, though in the end I believe he picked up some of the language.

Darvish never lived up to his potential, partially because of injury. Maybe this year. As for Ichiro, he speaks English better than he lets on.

American League teams will be scouting his steps Angeles, A' could not keep winning when he was on mound ..
