I'm waiting for the day we find out that the cost of the new Olympic stadium has actually surpassed the original Zaha Hadid stadium (which was cancelled for being too expensive).

All options on table should include 'cancellation' of 2020 games.

Right, and just who or where would be able to prepare and host them if they are cancelled? Just saying it means nothing, coming up with viable alternatives is most important.

The games wont be cancelled, nor delayed for a year or whatever, the Olympics WILL go on, just how and in what facilities is the point.

Using existing venues to cut costs is the smartest move, in my opinion. as it is getting close to the point where existing facilities will need to be used as time is quickly running out on being able to construct anything.

What exactly is the good for nothing most unpopular ex-prime minister in J history Mori doing? Probably nothing.

There have been so many scandals and goofs since Japan was awarded the "compact games".

No money... Interesting The organizing process skipped that check. I wonder what else was glossed over...

@Yubaru. I do not want to put thoughts into your words that you did not intend as I do not know what your intentions were but it is statements like this that have made the Olympics the 400-lb gorilla it as become. The Olympics are neither a human right nor a necessity. They have been cancelled at times and they should be cancelled if hosting them would mean the economic destruction of the host country. Those associated with this "Olympic movement" have become self-centered, entitled brats who care not a fig for the destruction they cause as long as they get their money. Times are changing.......

Thinking out of the box, outsource it to Philippines.

Cancellation is a fine option.

If you could propose a way to save Japan about $40 billion, who in their right mind wouldn't consider it?

Pride is expensive!

I agree to spread it to existing venues in Japan, but Water sports in Miyagi? Went there with my Geiger counter last December...guess what it recorded?

Yeah, we've heard this before... all options on the table so long as the one we want is chosen.

I'd guess it recorded exactly the same as it did in Tokyo (unless it was faulty).

My university (in Sendai) publishes radiation levels measured on campus. They are the same now as they were before the nuclear disaster. I don't trust the government at all, but I do believe the university readings are accurate.

I'll second that.

Sam, you nailed it 100%.

They should cancel them. $30 billion?? For a nation of 127 million, that's approximately a little over $230 or say around 2 man 4 sen yen per person. That's every man woman and child-Japanese and foreign- that has to pay that out to host the olympics without putting Japan into EVEN MORE debt. And that's if they cost 30 billion, not more. We don't know just how much more its going to go over. could end up costing us 3 man each to host this. And for what? Ridiculous that on one hand they want to raise the consumption tax on an already struggling public to bring down the debt, but they want to host a completely useless event and throw more money at it as if we were still in the bubble economy.

All Options, meaning even cancellation or moving the games. I can name a city that could adopt the 2020 games 6 months months out. Sydney, But it will have to in October when all venues will be available. For accommodation the IOC can sponsor cruise ship mor in the Harbour. Easy. But Tokyo should keep at the IOC with these other options. Like Samwatter stated The IOC are the largest Self- Centred Mob on this planet.

Will all these alternative proposals include the cost of these public parasites sitting around and soaking public funds? This is something that should have been confirmed well before Japan's Olympics bid was presented, not a few years after it was awarded. The procrastinating fogies are paid with my taxes and I want my money back!

Pride is expensive! in Japan its priceless, to be defended no matter the cost.

You don't know Japan if you think a mere $40 Billion would be "saved". For discussion sake alone, I am quite sure, seeing the track record of the government, there would be plenty of greedy vultures hanging around to find a way to spend (line their pockets) the money in some other way possible.

There would be no "savings" in reality.

@Aly. Thanks.

You're welcome mate.

It is clear that Japan cannot deliver what they promised when they bid on the games. No surprise. Neither could Rio. If the expense is unreasonable for Japan then the games should be transferred to a country that can properly and adequately provide acceptable venues for each sport. Cancellation is not an option unless world affairs necessitate such a drastic step.
