Really can't stand that Mouratoglou guy. "There was no match" What a disrespectful thing to say. A big congrats to Pliskova and Kerber the new No. 1 !!

Maybe - just maybe - the time has come for the old guard in Tennis, the Williams', Murrays, Djokers etc, to step aside for the new generation of superstars to dominate the sport for years - the Pliskovas and Nishikoris.

This isn't performance art, acting, or professional wrestling. If the 'new generation' wants the title, the path is clear and well defined, you take it from the 'old guard.' If they're not good enough to do so, then they don't deserve it.

I think we'll see more competition among the top men as the big four age/retire and the younger guys gain the experience required to be able to compete for the big wins.

As for Nishikori, two years ago when he beat Raonic, Wawrinka and Djokovic to make the final he'd come into the tournament carrying an injury and having no expectations to do anything. It's easier to play your game when there's no pressure.

But since then he has had to carry the extra mental baggage of higher seedings and expectations. After facing the almost indefeatable Djokovic several times since in big matches, his recent defeat of Nadal at the Olympics may have given him the experience of what is needed in the top-two inches to compete in such matches. He got another taste of that here against Murray. Besides the technical and mental skills, the rest is keeping injury-free.

Djokovic too spent a good amount of time sitting at number 3 behind Federer and Nadal in the rankings before finally cracking it, after his early initial success.

Would be really nice to see Ms. Pliskova win it all on the ladies side ! Ganbarre, Kei-san !
