The Tokyo 2020 Olympics bid committee on Thursday launched the Tokyo 2020 Athletes' Commission under the guidance of Chairperson Yuko Arakida, one of Japan's most renowned Olympic medalists.

The Athletes' Commission will draw upon the ideas and experiences of nearly 25 Olympians and Paralympians, including Mikako Kotani, a Tokyo 2020 Bid Ambassador and Seoul 1988 Games synchronised swimmer bronze medalist, and Junichi Kawai, a 21-time Paralympics swimming medalist. Chairperson Arakida, who won gold at the Montreal 1976 Games in volleyball, has been traveling to locations across the globe as part of Tokyo 2020 to meet key members of the Olympic and Paralympic Family.

Tsunekazu Takeda, IOC member and president of both the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and Tokyo 2020, said: "The launch of the Tokyo 2020 Athletes' Commission is another crucial milestone for our bid. By learning from past and present Japanese Olympians and Paralympians, we intend to reinforce our plan of thoughtful and innovative propositions for the Olympic and Paralympic family. Best practices and insight derived from the Commission will be woven into our Games plan as we strive tirelessly to fine-tune our plans for the world's greatest sports celebration in 2020."
