business and profit squeeze more life out of human culture. Kind of similar to global warming. eventually what will be left except these conglomerations, no more likable than dinosaurs? banks and businesses don't need humans they just need their currency in order to multiply it it. MULTIPLY MULTIPLY! Truly hideous. All those stories from Philip K. Dick are beginning to resemble the realities of the the world in which we live. Looking at the behaviour of such disgusting organizations makes you feel dirty to be a human. If you belong to such a disgraceful conglomerate please either find a real job or hang yourself.

How is Amazon squeezing life out of culture by making books easier to publish and cheaper to buy? Before Kindle, most books were printed by corporations on paper made by corporations. They were distributed and retailed by corporations. And generally they were very expensive and often difficult to find. Amazon has made books instantly available, and it has brought writers and readers closer than ever before through its online review system.
My only reservation about Amazon's proposed scheme is that I would want to learn more about how authors will be paid under this "all you can eat" model.

good why should publishers be void of competition, they should compete for peoples business just as any other form of entertainment does. if its a quality read people will buy it.

Project Gutenberg has thousands of free books available, no subscription or credit card required.
I wouldn't subscribe to the Amazon service; quite apart from not wanting them to increase their power over publishers, as soon as you stop paying you have nothing.

available in Japan?

Written by a person who has probably never tried to publish a book. Its tough to even make any money on publishing a book and most authors don't make any thing if not a loss.
