Many people are holding off buying till iPhone5. Unfortunately for Apple, they only have one line of smartphones, so in between releases, they have nothing new to offer and at a disadvantage.

Android is becoming the Windows of the smartphone world. Eventually, if developers want to make money, they'd have to market to 70% of the world.

Pity the network they use is crumbling and creaking under the load of all these smartphones, everyone surfing the web, sending email, down loading music, videos, and watching tv, the docomo net work has been absolutely sh!te lately but dont know if any of the other providers are any better.

Docomo seriously needs to step up the game with its network.

Samsung Electronics Co and other phone makers shipped nearly 105 million Android smartphones in the April-June quarter, giving Android 68% of the worldwide market, up from 47% last year

Would like to know how much of that 68% is attributed to Samsung.

Lumping Samsung, HTC, et all into the umbrella term Android is such lazy journalism (think Samsung cares if Android based phones account for 68% if they only have 20% of that market??)

Realize that the android carriers are also competing against each other. This isn't the battle between iOs and Android. Its Apple vs Samsung vs HTC vs Motorola vs Nokia vs Rim vs... and so on and so on.

Would like to know how much of that 68% is attributed to Samsung.

According to the news article:

According to IDC, Samsung accounted for 44% of all Android phones in the second quarter and shipped more Android phones than the next seven Android phone makers combined.

@lostrune2: Yes but that is referring to the shipments in the second quarter, but I get the impression that its probably 80% of all devices using android are Samsung

It is natural that Androids are more popular: here in Brazil you see it everywhere, in cheap phones from different brands. iPhones here are hold by people in malls or doing serious business. There is no way iOS to dominate the market, unless Apple sells iPhones for $100. iPhones will sell strong, but to people with money and willing to spend. It was and it will be a luxury brand.

I think they are trying to go for OS numbers, since iOS is apple only, blackberry is RIM, and then you have android and WP7. What is lazy journalism though, is to use ship.ping numbers rather than sales, and quarterly numbers instead of accumulated minus discarded. The numbers are quite different there, since I know few people who replace their android phone before it breaks, but plenty who upgrade their iphones.

I believe the "68%" you cited is talking about the 2nd quarter.

As per the article:

There were four Android phones for every iPhone shipped in the second quarter, research firm IDC said Wednesday. That's up from a ratio of 2.5 to 1 in the same period last year.

Samsung Electronics Co and other phone makers shipped nearly 105 million Android smartphones in the April-June quarter [2nd quarter], giving Android 68% of the worldwide market [in the 2nd quarter], up from 47% last year.

According to IDC, Samsung accounted for 44% of all Android phones in the second quarter and shipped more Android phones than the next seven Android phone makers combined.

So, 44% of that 68% is attributed to Samsung.

Apple shook up the smartphone market when it released its first iPhone in 2007. It showed that phones can do much more than make calls and send email.

I know that AP has loved apple since the Photoshop 4 days, but come on. PocketPC based phones did everything the iPhone could AND also had handwriting and speech recognition. And that was back in 1999. My HTC phone from 2006 also had web browsing, phone, text, apps, and a ton more. Not to mention Blackberry made the businessphone (which is basically a smartphone) popular years before Apple.
