Oh my god I went into Softbank to buy a new protective film for my iPhone 7 since the one I was taking off my six cracked and they had a new robot there that was SO annoying I wanted to kick it over. Listening to it repeat itself in a whiny, child-like voice over and over was worse than a fork on the chalk board. Even Japanese customers in the shop were mocking the voice and one asked the staff to shut it off.

Japan has also used robots to fill jobs as kitchen workers and farmers

Where?

And as conversation partners? I guess that only works if you have not much to say.

And I think I have the idea that robots are pretty much autonomous, like a fly or hamster. Yet, every time I see these robot competitions the robot competitors seem to be remote-controlled. That, to me, is not a robot.

Yep. It is not widely known but Asimo has a human controller off stage. Asimo has some on board intelligence but not much.

Almost anything in Japan is called a robot. Put wheels on a garbage can, paint a face on it, put an endless loop player inside with an advertising spiel, and it will get called a robot.

In teaching I give lectures on what I call Japanese Robollocks.
