Sadly common sense takes back stage nowadays. There now has to be a huge song and dance to keep every last worrier happy. In the good old days the teacher would have told everyone to stand back, pulled the pin and tossed it somewhere relatively safe.

I think that makes me glad I didn't live in the good old days.

The child might probably think it must be a pineapple.

... and apologies for the levity, but why do they call it 'the good old days' if everyone was so stupid?

(With apologies to nandakandamanda who I'm sure is only joking).

nandakandamanda. So true! I can just picture my grade 4 teacher pitching the grenade over the fence and into the gulley. Nowadays you probably have to wait for animal control to show up while a dog mauls the children for fear of angering animal rights people.

Depending on his age (if he was old enough to know better), he may be eligible for the Darwin Award. I'm just glad know one was hurt. Scary.

My guess is that it was a dummy army demo grenade that was in their house and the Dad, knowing it was perfectly safe, suggested using it for the 'show-and-tell" class.

From the point of sudden panic, no-one would listen to the kid or what his/her explanation might be. (My guess)

An 11 yr old girl apparently, and she thought it was a money box!
