Conservatives are so ghey.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Sunday said his country would not follow Ireland’s lead and hold a referendum on gay marriage, adding that any decisions would be made by parliament.

Mother knows best?

You think he'd at least want some happiness for his sister.

Conservatives are so ghey.

Thanks , that gave me a chuckle

I admire Tony Abbott for taking an important moral stand against this.

A marriage can only ever be a man and a woman.

A marriage can only ever be a man and a woman.

Polygamy is a marriage which includes more than two partners.

A Yes vote in a Australian referendum has not got up since the 70,s and that was for equal rights for the Aborigials people. Australian dislike government back yes vote in referendum. So why won,t PM Abbott take this to the people to decide. One reason because the yes vote would get a resounding win. If poll show that the lib won,t win the next election. Pm Abbott will change his stance and go to the election with a yes to Gay marriage policy.

Why would shirt lifters want to get married anyway?

Correct me please if I am out of order here Australian Constitution – Chapter 1, Part 1 The legislative power of the Commonwealth shall be vested in a Federal Parliament, which shall consist of the Queen, a Senate, and a House of Representatives, and which is herein-after called “The Parliament,” or “The Parliament of the Commonwealth.”

Now Section 2 – Governor-General......

A Governor-General appointed by the Queen shall be Her Majesty’s representative in the Commonwealth, and shall have and may exercise in the Commonwealth during the Queen’s pleasure, but subject to this Constitution, such powers and functions of the Queen as Her Majesty may be pleased to assign to him........

Let the Queen of Australia decide, job done....

Isn't it past your bedtime?

Id love to have had many wife's at once but they tell me a Chinese proverb says 2 women under a roof is trouble so what would many wife's be or partners same sex or multiple partners of both sexes could be a very interesting family group if this ever happened in Australia as we recon Tony,s Gay in any case.

@Akula

A marriage can only ever be a man and a woman.

Because?

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Under the constitution, questions of marriage are the preserve of the Commonwealth parliament. ...Now that Cobbers is a classic example of political buck passing by an head of government, poms (prisoner of mother England) would be proud of.

Why would we? You want to govern yourselves so until you decide to unshackle yourselves from your past, that's as good as it gets. We Brits just get to watch (and point and laugh).

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Good on Abbott.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Hi mistie710, there is nothing for Brits to point and laugh at, or even muster a giggle. Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act 2013 could well be riddled with inconsistencies particularly relating to the Northern Ireland Assembly rejecting a proposal calling for the introduction of gay marriage, and the prospect of a conscience clause bill.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Shame on you Abbott, so out of touch with the real world.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Most of the world doesnt favour same sex marriage therefore gor now Australia isnt alone...

Bigotry runs thicker than blood?

Har! Too true....

A marriage can only ever be a man and a woman.

Because?

Because that is what science and thousands of years of history have shown is best for children and the general welfare of society. And because real marriage equality now demands that any adults that love each other can not morally be denied the right to marriage. That means polygamous marriage and bisexual marriage rights, marriage between close relatives, and lowering the legal age of marriage to all and not just in those rare situations where the parents of underage couples can allow it if they provide consent. Homosexual marriage breaks open the idea of marriage that calls into question all other similarly arbitrary restrictions on marriage rights.

Ironically the push for marriage equality means the end of the idea of marriage itself.

wolfpack:

Marriage has NOTHING to do with science. It is a concept thought up by man. And please don't quote the bible, because I see plenty of non-Christians and atheists getting married.

Best for children? Many children have done fine with one parent and even two parents of the same gender. And plenty have done worse with straight parents. What is important is the love and care from the parent(s). When people bring up incest, you know they're clutching at straws.

Anyway, tough. The majority of Ireland have made up their choice. Here's hoping other countries follow. Next up, Slovenia and Finland.

'Ironically the push for marriage equality means the end of the idea of marriage itself.!

No, it means the end of your view of marriage. Please speak for yourself and drop the tiresome slippery slope tongue flapping. The moral views of US rightwing comes across as at worst bigoted and at best quaint to most in a thoughtful country like Australia. Enjoy the used-car salesmen and snake handlers in the shiny suits blabbing and ranting in megachurches but remember this is one product these nutters will have difficulty flogging to decent countries.

Marriage has NOTHING to do with science.

Heh, it's even more hilarious when quoted by climate-change deniers like the Wolf....

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I'm sure this will get deleted but here we go. I think there is BIG difference between gay men and women. The women seem to want to pleasure themselves naturally with another woman. The men, on the other hand, want boink each other in the #&%. This action is very disgusting to me. Hey! I don't care if your gay and wanna do that privately, but this whole media blitz to accept it as "normal" is illogical, why, cuz it's not normal. It's repulsive. Keep your perversions to yourself. So are we going to see a Sheep marriage vote in the future?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Law of equality is for the normal people, marriage of same-sex is not about equality, it is asking for abnormal equal rights for abnormal people..... sorry to have to say this......abnormal people start to abuse the natural law in the name of equality....!!!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Okay, Australia. Close your eyes and plug your ears. Something is happening behind closed doors, and it is none of your business. There is a need for last place in any race, and Australia could be it when it comes to joining the TWENTIETH century and civil rights. There is no difference between a marriage contract and a mortgage contract. If it works, the couple is happy. If it doesn't work, the couple "splits the sheets." Get god out of the legal contract business.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

As long as a relationship is between consenting adults it should be legal and nobody else's business.

@Maverts

Heh, it's even more hilarious when quoted by climate-change deniers like the Wolf....

I am not in denial about the fact that the Earth's climate changes. It has always changed and will continue to do so for millions of years. Please speak for yourself.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

The US rightwing mentioning the word 'science'! The same crowd made up of geniuses who deny evolution ( one lawmaker claimed this idea was 'from the pit of hell' ), claim the earth is 6,000 years old, say homosexuality is 'unnatural' despite the clear facts that it is common among many species ( many used to claim it was only humans who made this 'choice' ) and deny human behaviour has anything to do with climate change despite an overwhelming scientific majority believing it does?

Please pardon us for having a laugh when these people mention 'science'.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Not even for his own sister? What a disgraceful man

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Marriage has NOTHING to do with science. It is a concept thought up by man. And please don't quote the bible, because I see plenty of non-Christians and atheists getting married.

The bible is where it comes from in the first place so why wouldn't some quote the bible?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Scoobydoo.

As a Buddhist I am offended having to live by another religions code of morals.

Isn't the Bible also based on older religions and texts like the Egyptian, Judaism, etc influences

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The bible is where it comes from in the first place

The delusion runs strong in this one.

@Jimizo

The US rightwing mentioning the word 'science'! The same crowd made up of geniuses who deny evolution

I am a conservative and believe in evolution and Darwin. What are you talking about?

( one lawmaker claimed this idea was 'from the pit of hell' ), claim the earth is 6,000 years old

You do realize that taking extreme examples like this and stereotyping all like people does little to support your views. You know there are Leftist's that believe that it is not immoral to 'abort' babies after birth and before the mother decides to keep the child. Should I assume that you also support infanticide?

...say homosexuality is 'unnatural' despite the clear facts that it is common among many species ( many used to claim it was only humans who made this 'choice' )

Since it is clear that it is common for many species to attempt to reproduce with adolescents do you believe that pedophilia is natural? Are pedophiles born that way? You do understand that you cannot 'cure' pedophiles - they almost always repeat their offenses. You should be careful about attempting to prove that homosexuality is natural by using all mammal or other members of the animal kingdom as your proof. Both homosexuality and pedophilia are sexual behaviors that are a part of who people are. An arbitrary man-made cut off date of 16 or 18 years old for who is to be considered an adult is just as arbitrary as claiming that only males and females should be allowed to marry. The iron clad rules for acceptable sexual behavior have now been changed. You can be sure that more changes are coming because they are considered 'natural'. You can be sure that these changes will have very large impacts on the societies that embrace them.

...and deny human behaviour has anything to do with climate change despite an overwhelming scientific majority believing it does?

Can you explain why climate change models cannot predict actual climate changes? Can you explain why the near two decade warming pause cannot be explained by the 'settled science'? Can you explain why scientists are scrambling to come up with other causes to explain what their 'settled science' could not explain? Believers in AGW never attempt to answer these questions because doing so only demonstrates how unsettled the science actually is.

Skepticism in the scientific community used to be encouraged. That was before AGW become faith with billions in grants involved.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

The delusion runs strong in this one.

No delusion in this statement. You may have also forgotten where the Westminster system of law was derived from.

As a Buddhist I am offended having to live by another religions code of morals. It is good to see some one who lives by their faith. Buddhism is a latter religion than that of the Jews which then became Christianity although many Jews reject that also, so yes you are correct, the older part of the bible is translated from Hebrew and the latter part also from Greek but none the less, one and the same document.

It is every individuals choice, every one can believe what they believe but no matter what, its important to be sure you've chosen for a reason. I've made mine knowing that its not always going to be popular, but it is mine.

Hi mistie710

Hi yourself! :)

there is nothing for Brits to point and laugh at, or even muster a giggle. Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act 2013 could well be riddled with inconsistencies particularly relating to the Northern Ireland Assembly rejecting a proposal calling for the introduction of gay marriage, and the prospect of a conscience clause bill.

I think you misread what was being said. Personally I favour the view that (a) there's nothing wrong with gay marriage and relationships; if two people love each other enough to want to do something like that, then let them and (b) my comment had more to do with your, or possibly more generally Australia's, insistence on maintaining a link to the British royalty and the leftovers from the era when British sovereignty was a reality in Australia. That's where I'm getting my laughs from.

Certainly I am not a great lover of legal instruments that are inconsistent but then I've seen plenty of these in my time. The problem as I see it is that a lot of regulations of this type suffer from two basic troubles; the first is that the people framing these laws often have no idea what they are doing and often cause problems for those that have to interpret and enforce these laws when they come into power and the second is that a lot of politicians frame such laws for no good purpose, by which I mean that they often use such laws as a popularity boost or at the very least enact such laws as a knee-jerk reaction against possible public outrage at perceived inaction.

Mind you, it could be worse. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uganda_Anti-Homosexuality_Act,_2014.
