Is Chicago indicative of America as a whole?

bass4funk (I think) recently posted a link to a site that is like the US Debt Clock site but for Chicago homicides and violence. That is, it has lots of figures and graphs on the topic (heyjackass.com really is its name):

Those are figures for just one month for just one big city! That is INCREDIBLE!! Americans should be outraged at statistics like this but most aren't. Pretty sad.

so shocking with human rights taken away from so many victims in the land of the free.

Crime has really exploded since the state elected a Republican as governor. Why not try a Democrat?

Glad to see the strictest " Gun Control" laws in the USA are working.

Very true! But the sad thing is, Obama over the past 8 years hardly mentioned it or talked enough about the violence. It's sad that the president of the US doesn't care about what happens in the black community.

When did Rahm Emanuel become a Republican? That's a first to hear!

Rahm is a Democrat.

the south side of Chicago is a complete lost cause. A war zone. Guess what party has ruled Chicago for decades? The Democrats.

Surprised by the mileage of this moronic meme, as if Chicago's surrounded by a shark-infested moat.

Is that really the best they can come up with?

No, the sad thing is American society lays all the blame for this on the president and the people involved don't actually think about or have empathy or respect for anybody but themselves.

No Republican mayor since 1931.

Illinois state police, 1,781 troopers (2013), responsible for the entire state not just Chicago, Republican governor.

Chicago police dept., 11,941 officers (2014), responsible only for the city of Chicago, Democratic mayor.

Why blame the governor?

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement. “Repeat gun offenders who drive the violence on our streets should not be there in the first place, and it is time to change the laws to ensure these violent offenders are held accountable for their crimes.”

Bingo! Give that man a cigar.

Right now being a cop in Chicago is like participating in a "catch and release" fishing tournament. catch 'em, take the vitals and release 'em. Just so you can catch and release 'em again. In a nine month period the Chicago police made around 2500 firearm related arrests, 600 of those arrests involved individuals with prior firearm related arrests. Some with as many a five. If you want to reduce the number of shootings in a community, releasing repeat gun offenders back into society is probably not the most effective strategy.

Chicago doesn't have the most restrictive gun laws in the US but it's right up there. But making restrictions on acquiring and possessing a firearm will have much less of a positive effect if violators are not held accountable and prosecuted. Laws have no value to society unless there is the will to enforce them.
