As he is an equal opportunities insulter, I guess he will soon be annoying them.

The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere redux.

Maybe Japan needs to start withdrawing aid and military support if Duterte angles towards China as an ally

Wow! The Philippines are playing both sides of the love triangle. It's a pretty good move actually. Whichever of the heavyweight brats come out on top, the Philippines will still have an alliance. Smart move!

Duterte should just declare that he will GIVE Scarborough Shoal to China, He's get impeached immediately and they could maybe get a President with some sense.

Whichever of the heavyweight brats come out on top, the Philippines will still have an alliance. Smart move! onlly problem is any natural wealth that the Philippines had were in those disputed waters. Duterte has basically given away any chance of his country rising from poverty. Not a smart move for the future of the Philippines.

USA needs to reassess situation in Asia. .It is obvious that Asians couldn't care less if China. makes new island.

Ah, ha! Another misled carp reeled in. Chinese can be the third language there. He is so short-sighted it is pathetic. This is exactly why USA citizens want to stop paying for Asia's defense. He will return to the future USA president on his knees begging for forgiveness and defense of what he calls HIS nation. It is not HIS nation, it belongs to the people. They just want to live peaceful lives and have their children go to bed with full stomachs.

I will comment knowing that majority of the comments here have a leaning towards US and Western ideologies and understanding. For the pro- US fanboys, the Philippines has a Mutual Defense Treaty (1951) with the US. When China started building those artificial islands - the US had the opportunity to carry out its defense duty and come out with a clear response to China that under the Treaty, an attack on one is an attack on the other… we all know what happened, or did not happen, otherwise there wouldn’t be Chinese-made islands in there. In 1999 , as a last desperate attempt to keep it’s claim, the Philippines ran aground its Navy Ship in the Scarborough Shoal – it’s still there dilapidated and rusting away but still manned by its resilient crew. The US did not do anything with China’s ventures and the Philippine Government brought the issue for arbitration to the UN Tribunal UNCLOS and won the case - at this point, it is the ONLY legitimate and strongest defense against China’s 9 Dash Line territorial claim, albeit it is not recognized by China of course (just like when US did not recognize UN ruling against it in Nicaragua). Any logical person will know how to play that winning UNCLOS card.

The Philippines has always been under the mantle of US only because of its economic benefits and its strategic location in the Pacific while the Philippines, they get to speak English and get Visa for that trade. Filipinos are satisfied and fully support Duterte (80% approval rating as of Oct 2016) for the great development and sound policy changes happening in the country right now; lower crime rates, slightly improved traffic , sustained GDP of 7%!, Stock grading breaking records, average death per day has gone down and majority of the dead are suspected criminals instead of their victims, nationwide expansion of government services and infrastructure. The only ones not happy right now seem to be foreign interests that want things to happen the other way.
