The Duterte Harry cocktail:

A generous measure of homicidal psychopath with a splash of Walter Mitty

Wow, this is going to annoy the short fingered vulgarian. The bromance surely must be over. How can Trumpsky do biggerly than this?

Outrageous that this man is in charge of a country. You know he's taking over the drugs business for himself.....

The hope of democracy is dying, and people care less and less. Duterte is a savage. The Philippines elected an amoral monster. Someone Trump admires.

A stiff drink is welcome these days.

"Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened corrupt government officials with the prospect of being thrown out of a helicopter mid-air, warning he has done it himself... The fiery-tempered former prosecutor said he once hurled a Chinese man suspected of rape and murder out of a helicopter."

You hurl "suspected" criminals out of helicopters to their death? Whatever happened to actually having a trial to see if they were guilty first, or if they're just falsely accused? ...or is it a case that if they're proven later to NOT be guilty, you can just rewind time and suck their splattered remains off the ground and back into the helicopter? That would be such a wonderful tool to have, otherwise you'd be a president who murders innocent people... and that wouldn't be good... Hitler... Stalin... Pol Pot not good...

And all the cheering Filipino women who greeted him when he visited Japan recently just go to show how we as humans will never learn. We are stuck in a loop. Trump will prove it on a more dangerous scale. The Simpsons has been frighteningly accurate. When it comes to idiot politicians that episode where Mayor Quimby is exposed as a fraud always comes to mind. "You people disgust me" he says to loud cheers from the crowd to which they reply "Give us hell Quimby" to more cheers. A reality TV star and snake-oil salesman as the most powerful man in the world doesn't get much more edge-of-your-seat if you were an alien watching this rock.

veejay: "Trump will prove it on a more dangerous scale."

Trump has never said that he's killed anyone. Sure, he claimed that he "could" shoot someone and no one would care, but I don't think anyone in their right mind would think he ACTUALLY plans to do that. If Trump is a danger, he is a danger to stability - and he won't be the first president to be that (probably most presidents are - think of Bush and Iraq, or Obama and healthcare). Duterte is something different and something far more dangerous. He has actually legalised the execution of members of the populace based on rumour or suspicion... think about that for a second. True, I'm no fan of Trump, but let's not muddy the water here - this has nothing to do with Trump. I'd like to think sane people, whether from the left or the right, would see the insanity in the boasts of Duterte. When the rule of law breaks down, dictators and murderers rise to the top.

donkusaiDEC. 30, 2016 - 12:15AM JST Trump has never said that he's killed anyone.

And I'd be very surprised if he ever had. Trump's personality disorder is more narcissism than sadism. As such, Trump gets his jollies by having other people do the dirty work for him. Let's not forget he encouraged his followers to assault protesters, called on Russia to hack his enemies, and called on American gun owners to deal with a possible Hillary Clinton victory.

Trump may not be the sociopath that Duterte is, but to counterbalance that he gets to play with the nuclear football, so...

uterte'swife: Did you ever kill anyone?

Duterte: Yeah, but they were all bad.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Duterte is evil. Before playing Judge Dredd, at least make 100% sure that the "suspect" is "guilty" and there is enough actual (not planted) evidence against the accused.

It's ok though. Duterte seems to be a God-"fearing" man, so it will make sense to him when, "Judge not lest you be judged. For as you have judged others, so shall you be judged... and as your meted out punishment, so shall punishment be meted out to you." He's not going to like it when his turn finally comes.

I heard a story like that years ago. But in the story I heard it was a Shabu kingpin. I remember a small town Mayor on the island of Mindanao (Duterte country) who was so inspired by the story that he commissioned a local artist to paint a big rock at the entrance to his barrio that read, "We kill drug pushers". Like I've said before, Duterte is far more representative of the average Filipino than anyone in the Manila elite.

While Duterte's blusterous bravado and implied thuggery open him up for criticism, especially when viewed from a modern Western perspective. He has a much more receptive and appreciative audience at home.

Personally, I agree with Abella. I've heard a couple of different versions of this story over the years and have always chalked it up as an urban legend.

Dude, why do you keep on defending this lunatic. These statements came out straight from his own filthy mouth. He is not telling a story, but rather boasting to all that he committed this crime before. Can't you tell the difference? What ever you say Duterte will still come out bad, if his statements are true, then he is admitting to a crime as these people he threw off the helicopters were still suspects and not proven guilty yet! plus I don't think it's in our constitution to throw criminals off the helicopters, so he is still committing a crime. And if he is just making this story up, then he is lying to the public and encouraging everyone that it is okay to disobey the constitution as long as they think they are doing the right thing! what a mess!

I am a filipino and I don't know what are you talking about,I am not from the elite class but I want to be represented by someone who obeys the law and respects our constitution.

President Duterte is extremely popular with the Philippines people; they voted, supported and love him. Drugs had destroyed many, many lives and families in the Philippines. Now Duterte is waging the 2nd war, war against officials' corruption. If he rules the Philippines for 20 more years, the Philippines will become the 2nd Singapore in ASEAN; strong & rich. He is doing a "Singapore 60s & 70s policies" but with much stronger rhetoric and tougher actions.

And you are clearly looking at him from a modern Western perspective, nothing wrong with that. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions based on their own point of view. But the point of view expressed by my family, friends and acquaintances living in the Philippines, right now, is far more in line with what Mr_jgb shared than with what you have.

Not at all, I want him to follow the Philippine constitution and law , I don't think that there is a Law that allows suspected criminals to be thrown out of helicopters. Simple! It's not a modern western perspective thing, it's common sense. We have laws so obey them! If your filipino family and friends' point of view is admiring savageness, then not the entire filipinos, many of us want a civilized nation with law-abiding citizen. You are criticizing the western perspective? but you visualize Philippines to become Singapore which is a very westernized country. HAHA

Fight corruption!? when he just gave favors to the most corrupt family in the Philippines, The Marcoses! you are saying that Philippines will become like Singapore, well Lee Kuan Yew knows how corrupt the Marcoses are while Duterte thinks that Ferdinand Marcos is a great man. Insane! How can he fight corruption if the corrupt officials are his friends, or you mean get rid of his opposition? Being popular doesnt mean he is CAPABLE to make the country progress, that is the same mistake that filipinos are making over and over again, Vote because of popularity, too gullible to believe of manly promises without thinking carefully and proper analization! that's why we can't progress. We always go back to start.

I don't get what are you trying to suggest, but I am from Manila Philippines and we have LAWS there, the main problem is not drugs! but indeed the enforcement of our laws, And Duterte obviously is a major violator so how can he make Philippines progress if he breaks his own rules? So if these continous, well he is sending our country off to chaos. If our laws are properly enforced then all of our nation's problem like Drugs, Corruption, etc. will be fixed without the need of iron fists.

It's an odd thing to say. Someday he will no longer be President, the opposition will be in power, and you'd expect them to follow up on this.

correction, it's 6,000 people now and still growing. That's what I am talking about, Duterte don't go through due process you don't know if all of these people are really guilty or not. Some of these people who got killed might be innocent, they were just alleged drug dealers and users. But not proven guilty, Duterte is insane!

Very few are protesting. Problem is that he has the popular support. Your point doesn't matter.

Hitler used to be very popular and many were afraid to oppose him. And then what happened? Having few protesters doesnt mean that it is correct or should be tolerated BUT you still dont know, sooner or later this protesters might grow, like Marcos, it took 20 plus years to finally throw him away. Duterte is popular to many, but not to the majority, remember only 40% of the population voted for him. The other 60% didn't choose him. people are just giving him a chance. But we don't know how long we'll be patient.

So you are suggesting that if there are innocent people killed in that 6000 we just forget about it? remember most of these people who got killed are the really poor ones who don't have enough money and connection to defend themselves.

Duterte thinks it was CIA that threw him away by staging a small coup detat.

Recently, spoke to a troubled Filipina. She told me, her drug addict husband is still harassing her 4 children and she have to work overseas as a maid to support her children. Her husband stole even the spoons, and ribbed off the home electricity cables to sell them to feed his addiction, and this has been going on for many years. Ask the millions of Filipina mothers who are working hard to send money back to bring up their children? Many have generally the same story. This story is played out in probably millions of Filipina families in a land of 98 million. Therein lies the reason why Duterte is so popular.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I am from Manila Philippines and we have LAWS there

In 2007 the former President of the Philippines, Joseph Estrada, was convicted by the Philippine Court system of plunder and sentenced to "reclusión perpetua" (permanent imprisonment). His crimes included receiving as much as 545 million Philippine Pesos in kickbacks from illegal gambling syndicates and misappropriating millions of Philippine taxpayers Pesos. A sentence of "reclusión perpetua" includes, as well as permanent imprisonment, a lifetime barring from holding public office and a minimum of 30 years served before any pardon or parole can be considered.

Six weeks after his sentencing Estrada was granted a complete pardon by Gloria Arroyo ( Philippine President at the time) and now is the Mayor of your fair city, Manila. Is that the LAW and order and respect for the Philippine constitution you are talking about?

Manila is not the provinces, go spend some time in a impoverished barrio devastated by shabu and at the mercy of corrupt police and politicians. You might gain some insight into Duterte's appeal.

So what are you suggesting then? to not implement the LAW ? then what kind of country would you like the Philippines to become? You hit it right on! the problem in the Philippines is the messed up justice system, and Duterte is contributing to that problem a lot! So your solution to constitution disobedience and disobendience as well? Can you call that a civilized country? man, if you and your family want Philippines to become a land of savages then we don't. if Duterte will bypass the LAW as Arroyo did, then how is he different from the others? he is just another monster in a different kind.

Six weeks after his sentencing Estrada was granted a complete pardon by Gloria Arroyo ( Philippine President at the time) and now is the Mayor of your fair city, Manila.

I am from Manila but doesn't mean I voted for Estrada, I am sure that the people who voted for Estrada are the same people who voted for Duterte. Aren't they allies now? And if Estrada is a well known corrupt politician, why can't Duterte do something about it? so as the Marcoses? no due process right??? And to who's administratrion set Gloria Arroyo free? isn't it Duterte's ? it seems like Duterte is busy killing small time suspected drug dealers while giving favors to big time corrupt officials who are the real main problem of our country.

Manila is not the provinces, go spend some time in a impoverished barrio devastated by shabu and at the mercy of corrupt police and politicians. You might gain some insight into Duterte's appeal.

I have relatives and a house in a barrio somewhere in Luzon so I know the drug problem there. If the police are the protectors then why did Duterte give them salary increases? why doesn't he fire and send them to prison? It's been 7 months now and I still don't see any BIG TIME POLITICIANS being killed or got busted, only small time poor suspected drug dealers. I am not impressed at all by this savage president.
