The European Union on Tuesday told President Donald Trump that his “America First” and protectionist trade policies are “doomed to fail” and said the kind of trade deals like the one he scuttled with the Asian Pacific countries “are a handy scapegoat.”

And the reason for that failure is, because the EU doesn't like it, because it doesn't fit with their globalist outlook at how the world should be? The EU can think what it wants, they have their own problems to worry and sort out, they should stop worrying about what we do and do what they must to protect their borders, financial and evaporating entitlement culture and immigration problems first and let the US do what it it needs to do. If they don't like it, too bad.

Europe shouldn't tell what the US should do and the other way around too.

And what about 'registration of muslims' policy that Trump has touted for long time, sure EU does have their interest.

EU to Trump: Trade barriers, building walls 'doomed to fail'

The headline is a bit of an exaggeration. Cecilia Malmstrom is not 'the EU', especially when she is speaking in an unofficial capacity at a think tank. I'm sure she vehemently disagrees with many of the EU's own protectionist policies but she is in the minority.

I think the future of trade will be large trading blocks like the EU or Mercosur where absolute free trade and competition reign within the block, but barriers are still put up to the outside world in sectors like agriculture or steel. Unfettered capitalism, but with a brake pedal.

The E.U. should talk, they have already failed.

but barriers are still put up to the outside world in sectors like agriculture.

Wich is good because there is no real need to introduce new products in a already saturated and subsidised market with products that dont meet the quality standards of EU regulations.

For better or for worst Donald Trump election campaign manifesto made plain his intention to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and/or renegotiate existing membership of Nafta. His “America First” policies are not going to be dropped at the whim or opinions of EU commissioners.

Consequently, no amount of lecturing from EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom is going to make one iota of difference. EU economy's dependent on exports that run significant trade surpluses will have to consider restructure/reform to their long term economic model.

So when do the trade wars begin?

TPP was best for America's economy but Trump gave it up. He thinks unemployed white Americans can have jobs then its economy gets better for America as a result, however it would get worse than ever because all prices will go up as American labor is very expensive. That's why they build plants/factories outside US.

Trump is all bs talk and needs to show the us public he understands what the potus is all about. He is like PT Barnum and believes there is a sucker born every minute but maybe that is true in the USA

Those who in the 21st century think that we can become great again by rebuilding borders, re-imposing trade barriers, restricting people’s freedom to move, they are doomed to fail,”

Building a wall is not the answer,” Malmstrom told an audience at the Bruegel think tank. “The success of the EU relies on our open societies.”

Isn't that exactly what Europe did in response to the Syrian Crisis? While I wholeheartedly agree with the statements above, I think that they are extremely hypocritical (with of course the exception being Germany)

Trump actually revealed his domestic and foreign economic philosophy with this declaration which goes beyond the "designed" and "contrived" concepts of free trade which favors corporate interests with that of fair and "equitable" or "win-win" concept of trade, and by getting out of TPP and warning EU which basically "redistributes" wealth unequally and unfairly through the members favoring the bankers and large corporations that run the system.

Considering the Syrian Crisis was of their own making or if you believe Arab spring was a CIA conspiracy it wasnt really our problem to begin with and the Syrians (if they are Syrians at all mind you) should be thankful for the help they recieved wich they are.

Considering the Syrian Crisis was of their own making

Right. The iraq war had nothing to do with it.

or if you believe Arab spring was a CIA conspiracy

no just plain good old fashioned American intervention. Nothing more.

it wasnt really our problem to begin with

Then why is the military there now?

and the Syrians (if they are Syrians at all mind you) should be thankful for the help they recieved wich they are.

What help? We didn't help them. We threw them to the dogs. And when they came begging for help, we put them in concentration camps- excuse me- detention camps and told them that they were not welcome because they were terrorists- which was exactly who they were fleeing from.

No. Europe has been exacly what it accuses trump of: building walls. Its just that they don't like it when it happens to them or to their asian gravy train. And that's why they're complaining.

Right. The iraq war had nothing to do with it.

The Iraq war happend what they did with it is entirely on their own same for Egypt and co

no just plain good old fashioned American intervention. Nothing more.

Granted the US only escalated the situation further with its support of ISIS and the "moderate" Rebels

Then why is the military there now?

The only Nato armies there are US led Coalation (big schocker) and France and last time i checked France wasnt the entire EU.

What help? We didn't help them. We threw them to the dogs. And when they came begging for help, we put them in concentration camp

Most of them spend time in Refugee centers to be vetted if they can apply for asylum wich is standard in the EU and most are outfitted to handle people living there or else UN human rights groups would be all over that granted I cant speak for other nations since the EU isnt one country everyone handles it in their own way.

Hi sis is both in Iraq and Syria. Without the rock or there would have been the Isis in the first place.

Granted the US only escalated the situation further with its support of ISIS and the "moderate" Rebels

Don't forget, the Iranians were the first ones to enter the conflict from the outside. They were also aided by Russia and China so please don't throw this on the US on the moderate rebels.

The only Nato armies there are US led Coalation (big schocker) and France and last time i checked France wasnt the entire EU.

Let's not forget the Russians Iranians and terrorist group hesbollah helping out

What help? We didn't help them. We threw them to the dogs. And when they came begging for help, we put them in concentration camp

Human rights groups are all over the EU and have consistently condemn the EU for practices against human rights. The EU now is treating those Syrian refugees the same way Gert Willders is advocating. These people spend time in refugee camps only to be sent back to turkey. So after this kind of treatment for the Europeans to complain about the way Donald Trump is behaving is pure unadulterated Hypocrisy
