How can people make judgments on the President on his first day in office. If he watched the protest from the white house he probably thought what a popular guy I am with all of these women come to see me.

This sort of massive protest is unprecedented, especially when you consider there were protests in other cities around the world. I honestly don't know how Trump is going to bring the country together. The divisions in U.S. society are going to get worse, I fear, and that cannot be good for the world. I guess the only hope is to say that in three years and 10 months, a new president will be elected.

16 ( +22 / -6 )

The protesters are great, but should be under no illusions.

Less than 10% of the 293 Republican legislators who control both houses of Congress are women. No woman holds a Republican leadership position in either the House or the Senate. There are only two women in Trump's cabinet the highest rank of which is Secretary of Transportation!

The GOP dislikes and ignores it's own women, so it's certainly not going to pay attention to anybody else's.

They should be marching on a media who reassured them for so many months leading up to the election that Hillary would win in a landslide. I can sort of understand the mental anguish from that perspective.

How can people make judgments on the President on his first day in office.

I think many people are aware of his history with women (and people he believes are beneath him, i.e. the 99%) and are protesting that. Only his most loyal followers, his truest believing cultists and the billionaire global elite who stand to profit from his reich, will cry that the numerous accounts of his having demeaned and even assaulted women over the last few decades are fake news, or even scarier not important. For some reason these rightists and cultists are able to ignore and/or accept that the man has been a spoiled class brat all his life accustomed to getting whatever he wants by stepping on people. They even call that leadership!

He's a 70 year old man who's bullied people, both male and female, his entire life. Leopards and spots.

serial bankrupt, punani-grabbing, problem son of a KKK man?

The mind boggles.

SWAMI’S THOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT: Sheer craziness for these women to indulge in such meaningless demonstrations! If there is any individual who has a feeling of being hurt by what President Donald Trump has said in his inaugural address or in his campaign speeches, they are welcome to bring their grievances to the President’s personal attention for possible solutions instead of wasting time and resources staging fruitless street protests!

-20 ( +1 / -21 )

A day late and a dollar and a few sexual assaults, lies, and tweets too late ! Pray for the good old USA !

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Trump is a racist illegitimate corrupt fascist nazi sexual predator who stole the election with the help of the Russians, but let's not forget that Barack Obama was a Kenyan-born secret Muslim out to destroy America. Lol, I think all Americans need to take a good long look in the mirror and ask themselves if this is the sort of political discourse they want for the next 4-8 years. If I can make a suggestion, focus your rational criticism on the merits of Trump's policies and let go of the superfluous insults. Now is the time for people to decide if they are going to offer something more constructive than Trump or just descend into the left-wing version of the birther movement.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

I think all Americans need to take a good long look in the mirror and ask themselves if this is the sort of political discourse they want for the next 4-8 years.

Their country is broken. The problem is, there isn't even a movement to fix it. The teams are entrenched, and that's all that matters to them.

@Strangerland

I think it's interesting to contrast Trump and Brexit here. With Brexit we've been discussing WTO rules, tariff and non-tariff barriers, trade deals, capital flows and so on. It's mostly been a legitimate debate that goes to the heart of the issue. Contrast that with Trump and it's just been a whole load of nonsense and a few shadowy conspiracy theories. I've heard alot less about how unfeasible many of Trumps promises are and alot more about how he's going to be grabbing p****, fleecing America to enrich himself, and launching nuclear attacks.

Their country is broken. The problem is, there isn't even a movement to fix it.

It's little wonder that sane rational people don't want to stick their heads above the parapet to fix things. Mark my words, the next American president after Trump (whether democrat or republican) will be another reality TV star or celebrity.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

I haven't been paying that much attention to Brexit, but it does seem to be being handled with much more civility. You're British right? My impression (granted, potentially wrong) is that while there is division because of Brexit, British people still feel part of the same team, with different opinions. Does that seem like an accurate impression?

3 ( +6 / -3 )

@swami Sheer craziness for these women to indulge in such meaningless demonstrations!

How about the men who marched with the women? Are you saying they should not have the right to peacefully protest? They were given permits by their respective governments so they were legally authorized to do so.

How can it be considered 'meaningless' when more people marched to show their concerns for Trump than marched in support of Trump during his inauguration?

People marched worldwide, hundreds of thousands of people expressed their concerns that Trump has a history of demeaning women. Hats off to them. I hope the president listens to their 'grievances'.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

@Strangerland

I think that's a fair assessment. It's certainly the most divisive political even in recent history but so far nobody has seriously been accused of being a traitor, a sexual predator, a fascist or a foreign puppet.

Perhaps the big difference with Trump is that he's an unknown quantity and none of his policies are particularly detailed. Once we see the plans and policies, perhaps the criticism will shift to something more substantive and less apocalyptic or sensational. But for now I guess we are stuck with talking about golden showers and debating whether Barron Trump is autistic.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The divisions are caused by whining sore losers, backed by rich crooks that will longer be able to fleece the American people.

Partially correct raw beer. They are also caused by DT's policies and vision. I am not a woman let alone a '1st generation feminist' yet I do understand women's concern over losing access to free birth control for example, especially for those living in states that restrict abortion access.

Again am no hard core anti-trump and sincerely hope he will agreeably surprise us sceptics and make America/the world 'great again' but I have to say his narrow-mindedness over what I consider to be basic rights/issues is quite scary. In any case it's also the president's job, in all countries, to heal divisions and bring everyone together (most fail to do so and in DT's case I have the impression he's not even trying).

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Too bad, million minds were duped by progressive liberal globalist who used them in hoping they will be dictators one day (e.g. George Soros Inc, media). The marchers are exclusive with leftist agenda organized and deceived by extreme liberal agenda. They denied women pro life the right to march.... Look at their leaders, a bunch of low morals Hollywood stars such as Madonna, Kate Perry, and illegal immigrants. THEY SHOULD MARCH IN MOSUL, TEHRAN, N.KOREA, AFGHANISTAN, CHINA.... if they are true to themselves.

-13 ( +2 / -15 )

Your analysis seems to fly in the face of all logic and history, Bgood41. It's utterly amazing how policies of open markets and tax cuts for the rich, while standing idly by while the rich made off with all the gains, all inspired and enabled by right-wing capitalist ideology and rightist accomplices of the rich has somehow now been blamed on the left in the anti-intellectual wonderland of the rightist's mind. Perhaps you are too young to remember how market fundamentalist Washington consensus, straight out of Hayek and then the University of Chicago, having been first tested in Pinochet's Chile (right-wing dictator if there ever was one), was spread to the world by Reagan and Thatcher (right-wing leaders), at least the useful pieces that directly benefitted the rich. Since then there is has emerged a whole industry of right-wing think tanks taking money from big business and the rich to promote an agenda conducive to their interests. We are at this miserable juncture because of the right. But in a post-truth world I guess you are free to believe whatever you like and that makes it true.

Trump stunned the political establishment by defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton, the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. party.

Dear Thompson Reuters - Stop doing Trump's propaganda for him. His rise didn't shock "the political establishment", it shocked everyone who wasn't a part of of his fan club.

M3M3M3JAN. 22, 2017 - 10:14AM JST Trump is a racist illegitimate corrupt fascist nazi sexual predator who stole the election with the help of the Russians, but let's not forget that Barack Obama was a Kenyan-born secret Muslim out to destroy America.

The difference is Obama was called a Kenyan-born secret Muslim out to destroy America because he was black and had a non-Anglo name and that made racists really uncomfortable. Trump on the other hand is being called a racist illegitimate corrupt fascist nazi sexual predator who stole the election with the help of the Russians because of things he actually did.

We need to stop the gaslighting. Trump's volunteer propaganda team will say anything to equivocate the racist hate Trump and his supporters spewed throughout Obama's 8 years with the legitimate resistance people across most spectra of American society are expressing. It's a lie, they are not remotely similar.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Normal to vent after such extreme grief and disappointment on high expectations of a Hillary Clinton presidency. Many American families were divided in this, including mine and many I know. Largely vociferous but non-violent crowds, unlike the masked thugs the other day.

I can see Ivanka Trump, the millennial working mom of three and daughter of a billionaire who travels coach class, the Trump siblings and their families, and their teams with their hands full but collectively effective in a role as catalysts to healing and as powerful advocates to family and women's issues.

Beyond a foreground of security and a myriad of key issues handed over by his predecessor, President Trump's economic policies, i.e. lower taxes, jobs, jobs, jobs, will put food on the table, to put it plainly, and should go a long way to quell rage in this winter of discontent with 95 millions Americans out of the labor force.

That being said, nothing will appease liberal elitists who had it so good with an allied bully pulpit in the last eight years and may never come to terms with the abrupt reversal of policies espoused entirely on unabated progressivism.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

"My impression (granted, potentially wrong) is that while there is division because of Brexit, British people still feel part of the same team, with different opinions. Does that seem like an accurate impression?"

I'm not so sure about that. It's worth pointing out that Brexit could trigger another Scottish independence refrendum.

Overall, I'd say that the Brexit debates did tend to focus more on the issues and a practical discussion of them. There was a touch of the Trumps about Johnson and Farage who did go for the visceral approach at times although both are far more informed then Trump. It's revealing that Farage has landed a job at Fox News, a place where he really can wallow in the visceral and not worry about detailed and reasoned argument.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Why are they protesting Trump? I don't suppose any of these women have taken a moment to think about how and why Trump became president. But if people were genuinely capable of independent and objective thought, America and the world would be a much better place, and Trump would still be building hotels.

Trump is a result or a symptom, and not the cause. These women are barking up the wrong tree, blaming the man who was elected, and not the broken system which caused him to be elected.

Why did America elect Trump? Because they no longer trusted the establishment, which has abused America and many of it's people. It is not Trump they should be protesting against, but the RNC, and the DNC, who, through their gross corruption and mismanagement inadvertently put Trump in office.

These people should be protesting, everyone should, but not against Trump, because it is not his fault that he is president. It is the fault of the people themselves, who allowed their government to deteriorate to the level it has.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Pretty impressive showing by the ladies.

Normally by this point Trump and Republican supporters would be using their standard line, "What didn't this group protest (insert unrelated incident involving minorities.)" Doesn't seem to fit very well here. Too bad.

Let's see how Trump responds. He said he wanted to unify the country, so here's a good first chance.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

The protests around the world and the Women's March on Washington augur well for the future. For the last 40 years I've followed Trump's career considering him to be a generic ignoramus, a typical example of the money-grubbing, p--ssy-grabbing "Homo Americanus", yet his accession to power makes him an "instrument of destiny", metaphorically speaking, a big, fat Repug suppository who is going to give the bloated, constipated and corrupt Republic the national enema it has needed for soooo long. Something good is bound to come out of all this. His triumph will be short-lived. Starry-eyed Trumpistas are bleating that he will be" the next Ronald Reagan". Indeed, Trump's administration will surely even exceed the record-breaking "revolving door" of Reagan's appointed officials who resigned, or were indicted and convicted for sundry scandals involving corruption and other crimes. There is no need for despair or fear for the future because liberal America will soon wake up from "the Nightmare on Pennsylvania Avenue".

So, in just one day Trump has succeeded in getting more women exercising than Michelle Obama did in 8 years. Progress!

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Just think if this many American women got out and voted maybe Hillary might have had a chance, goes to show that you wouldn't listen to the pollster's anymore first Brexit, then DT for President.

These protesters don't realize that they are tools. They are manipulatees of a system which instead of serving the people, rules them. America's political system has devolved into a left side and a right side, and the only thing they have in common is that they are both equally wrong.

Washington and the power structure which exists there hates Trump. It has tried everything it can to keep Trump out of office, everything. It has spent billions to defeat Trump, it has leaked anything and everything it has been able to dig up on him. It has manipulated the media and manipulated the polls. Yet none of it has worked.

Now Trump is president, and has the reins of power in his hand. Since Washington could not defeat Trump in the election, it is now trying to diminish his authority. It is using the same media it used to try defeat Trump in the election to increase public angst against him. This is not to say that Trump is innocent, or good, or bad, but he is not what he is being made out to be by Washington.

Why is Washington doing this? For the money, of course. Trump has promised to cut federal spending by 20%. It sounds like an empty promise, but Trump started by holding his inauguration for 20% under budget. A 20% cut in federal spending equates to roughly $1 trillion per year. This cut is going to hurt a lot of people. But the people who are most hurt will be those lobbyists and contractors who live in the suburbs of Washington DC. These people are the masters of Washington, and, by extension, America.

Obama deficit spent $9.35 trillion dollars during his presidency, or $75,000 per US household. Where did this money go? Has every household in America received a check for $75,000? I don't think so. Since Bill Clinton left office, he is some $150,000,000 richer. Al Gore is $200,000,000 richer. How much have Bush, Cheney, and others made? How much has been made by the numerous senators and congressmen? How much have their friends and relatives made?

What if Trump turns off the tap?

Do these protesters know what is really going on in Washington? No, they don't. In reality, they know very little. As Hitler said before he became chancellor "what a wonderful thing for rulers that men are stupid." People want to believe, Washington and it's minions take advantage of this need to believe.

The stupidest people in the world are democrats, the stupidest people in the world are republicans. And it is because they are so stupid that Trump is now president.

Trump is in the process of turning off the tap for climate change, which has been used by Gore, Musk, and a great many others to make their fortunes. He is turning off the tap for Obamacare, which, while it has benefitted a large group of uninsured Americans, it has made fortunes for those connected with Washington. These programs divert most of the money they receive from the government to the top 1%, while nothing is really done to fight climate change, or other problems.

America spends more for infrastructure than any other country in the world, yet the infrastructure is crumbling.

Where does the money go?

America spends more on education than any other country, yet educational standards are poor.

Where does the money go?

America spends more on healthcare than any other country, yet many have no insurance, and those who do have it are seldom fully covered.

Where does the money go?

Why isn't anyone protesting about these things?

I'm curious, how do these protests compare in size to the ones launched by the right wing after Obama was elected? Did they burn more cars, break more windows, injure more police?

I thought "fascists" were people who wore black, covered their faces, destroyed public property, and acted like thugs. Maybe I'm wrong though... to quote Ed Morrisey:

"Rather than take on the honorable and difficult task of the opposition party and rebuild themselves for future success, some on the Left have decided that they’re victims of oppression. . That’s not only ridiculous, it’s an insult to those who have had to fight true oppression and who had self-governance stripped from their hands, to the extent they had it at all."

The Democrats have been in a tailspin for 8 years. These protests will work to ensure that the tailspin continues. They are tone-deaf and condescending, preachy and intolerant. Case in point, women who were not pro-abortion were told to stay home from the protest because they don't agree 100% with the agenda being pushed.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Americans who feel that they've been let down by the system have a very legitimate complaint. But it was ubndantly clear over a year ago to well over half of America that Trump was most certainly not the man to bring that relief. After all, how useful are economic gains built on a mountain of racism, bigotry, religious intolerance, and flagrant misogyny? What kind of America are we when we've sold our souls for temporary gain?

You may have chosen to forget that Trump likes to grab unwilling women by the pussy because his power and celebrity supposedly protects him, but I haven't forgotten. Nor will I stop reminding his supporters. It would seem, based on the number of protests against his obnoxious existence, that I'm not alone in that thinking.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Most depressed kind of confusion in Mr Trump' mind seems over riding him is very obvious when he just repealed Obama care Act without correctly putting some great alternative, as USA runs on insurance mostly; else poverty levels might overshoot; it is not easy task to bring some great economic development; it is not like he handing over pens, oce signing after, to his staff of relatives and friends after inauguration and taking oath, obviously it shows he doesn't understand what Oath he took on American constitution; sorry to say, as i saw his inauguration on 20th !

(15 paragraphs of conspiracy theories deleted)

You've got to love the moon logic that Trump's volunteer surrogates jump through to defend their guy. Which do you think is the more plausible situation:

(A) Women are sufficiently upset by a President who tries to normalize sexual denigration of women and sexual assault against women that they decided to march against him, or,

(B) An enormous conspiracy controls the government, somehow couldn't prevent Trump's campaign, but can get millions of women around the country to spontaneously form marching groups on the same day.

If you think (B) is the more plausible scenario even though you can literally walk up to women and ask them why they marched, you may be a Trumpster.

Oh, by the way, kudos for framing your misogynistic dismissal of women's genuine concerns in such a way that even when women are angry enough to march on Washington, men are still secretly in control of them. Even your imaginary conspiracies need to somehow disempower women from making choices on their own. I bet that makes for an absolute gold pick-up line!

Of all the celebrities there today the only "issue" I could see being brought up in a concrete way was America Ferrera's standing up for undocumented immigrants. Probably because she is one herself. His real crime is still not being Hillary.

Let me fix that for you:

Illegal immigrants

They broke the laws of this country to enter, then stay. They should be deported. People who followed the rules, like my grandparents, deserve to be ahead of anyone who broke our immigration laws - performing illegal acts. The people who don't understand this boggle my mind. If it were me, I'd block their family members from ever entering the country for any reason too - even for vacation.

As they are being deported, they should be treated with respect. Perhaps Japan would like to provide these people with a new start in life?

I'm not suggesting these hardworking people are terrible, just they broke an immigration law and they KNEW IT. Breaking laws needs to have repercussions. When I get caught speeding and get a ticket, I expect all the things the police and courts do to happen. It wouldn't be "fair" otherwise. I thought the USA tried to be "fair" whenever possible. Isn't that a shared core value?

AND this is 1 of the reasons that President Trump was selected by people near our southern borders.
