An eye for an eye leaves us all blind.

Also, left to spend the rest of his life in prison is a worse punishment than death.

Precisely. A much scarier and lonelier prospect.

Capital punishment is scant deterrent if you have sufficient lack of self love to commit this obscenity.

I can't see the point in making this man suffer for all of his life just for the sake of it when you look at how not only how much his incarceration will cost, but the drain on the taxpayer when keeping an evil man like this and all the others like him alive to make them suffer....

There is no doubt to his guilt, he should be taken around the back of the courthouse and given a double-tap to his head: Use his organs for people that need them. ANYTHING other than keeping him alive for four or five decades like Manson....

Lifetime incarceration is cheaper than the death penalty.

It depends how long they live. They reckon Manson has cost at least double . Probably more. This man is twenty two.

I don't support capital punishment...

... but Dylan Roof isn't really on the hill I care to make my stand against it.

I'd say this guy more than most deserves to die for his crimes, however I assume he would also prefer death than spending his entire life in jail

I don't always support capital punishment, only in cases where there is no doubt like this. And I certainly don't agree with the costly appeals process that lasts twenty odd years that Stranger is referring to. My reasons are purely economic, plus I'm sure his organs would benefit a decent member of society.

Life in prison is a costly death sentence anyway - a sentence that is the cruellest IMO if you're into retribution punishment that is.

While I'm inclined to agree, people are never even supposed to be found guilty unless there is no doubt of their guilt, so for every case there is supposed to be no doubt. So how do you draw the line?

Agree with both statements. Actually think the sentence itself, i.e death or life in prison, is in this case anecdotal.

He got the worst of both worlds: Decades on death row without any certainty when or if the sentence will be carried out.

StrangerlandJAN. 11, 2017 - 05:59PM JST So how do you draw the line?

With difficulty. But the line here is self-explanatory - he's admitted it and basically agrees with his penalty. The world would be a better place without his presence and the US prison system is direly overloaded - and the government racking up a billion dollar a day debt spiral...

Common sense should be the final judgement. Even if at times it defies the law of the land. Although I doubt we're going to see much of that either for the next few years.

One less Trump supporter. Should have sentenced him to several lives in jail, in solitary. Maybe put a black man in charge of his ward.

Death penalties are automatically appealed by law, effectively providing 2 trials and 2x the expense.

The level of surety in US trials is "without a reasonable doubt." That isn't 100%. Innocent people have certainly been found guilty due to botched forensics and lies. Innocent people have certainly been killed at the hands of the state.

I'm inclined to never take a human life. Stick him in solitary for the next 50 yrs. ZERO chance for parole. Would be good if all his guards were non-whites too for a little extra justice. I'm not worried about the guilt in this case.

This is a man that knows what he did, is proud of what he did, and is in no way shape or form remorseful for what he did. For the simple fact that he just didn't like the skin color another ethnicity.

The death penalty is absolutely justifiable in cases like this. The person is absolutely no benefit to society, does not want to change, and would do it again if they could.

Death penalty should be reserved for the brutality, perpetration, and viciousness of the crime.

Lifetime incarceration is cheaper than the death penalty.

That is only due to the fact that those on death row are automatically granted several appeals, if those given a life sentence were also legally granted automatically several appeals then life in prison would be more expensive.

The death penalty is barbaric and needs to be eliminated.
