Obama wants to extend Bush’s tax cuts, except for individuals making more than $200,000 a year and couples making $250,000.

And this is why he meets so much Republican resistance--The $200,000+ plus crowd is the only group that the GOP cares about.

God forbid anyone should be allowed to keep more of their hard earned money in Amerika.

No one I’ve met is looking for a handout.

That's funny, coming from a community organizer. Something for nothing is their mother's milk. "Obama gonna pay my bills, Obama gonna buy my gas...." The whole concept of "social justice" is about getting a handout.

You forgot corporate handouts. The whole GOP concept is the redistribution of wealth from the many to the few.

You realize that only half of Americans even pay taxes these days. Meaning, those 200k people are the ones keeping the economy running.

Oh, like the recent handouts to the insurance industry? Or how about the Dem sponsored and passed handouts to the banking industry. Yes, keep talking about how its the GOP doing the handouts.

Anyone buying something in most states pays sales taxes, as well as a host of other taxes and fees on things like automobile registration, telephone usage, property and ad valorem, etc. Not to mention Social Security and Medicare.

LOL! If "those people" had to depend for customers on only those making $200k or more, there would be very few healthy businesses today. Get real.

If it is medical insurance being referred to here, the only thing that would not have represented a handout is a shift to universal health care under a single-payer system. There wasn't a single Republican who would ever go for that. Unfortunately, there are too many Democrats who think and act as Republicans do on that issue.

Please note, I said taxes, not "sales taxes". Not "Property Taxes". You know very well what I mean Yabits, and its true, despite your wish to the contrary.

Umm, no. Really. There are lots of other things they could have done without it being a handout to the insurance industry. Simply requiring basic changes, like making them cover people despite pre-existing conditions, would have been handout free. Instead, they pass a bill that the insurance industry is thrilled over. Regrettably there are Republicans who believe in giving handouts to industry. Unfortunately they think too much like the Dems in that regard. Bush was a lot like that as well, or have you forgotten medicare, and NCLB?

No it's not. Saying that low-income people "don't pay taxes" is an extreme falsehood. You want to somehow get people to believe that those who make low income are somehow immune to taxation. When in fact every dollar they pay comes from the income they need to survive and not from the froth at the top as with those making over a quarter-mil per year.

Keep in mind that the dollars that low-income people supposedly don't pay are in fact withheld from their paychecks each and every pay period, and the only way they get their income tax payments back is through an annual refund. Of course, even those without much of an education can see that this is the same as people providing the government with interest-free loans over the course of the year.

Simply requiring basic changes, like making them cover people despite pre-existing conditions, would have been handout free.

This is moronic. "Making" a company cover someone "despite pre-existing conditions" would not prevent an insurance company from simply charging far more for these higher-risk clients than the clients themselves could afford. As with most Repubican solutions, it does nothing to address the problem, as those who could not afford insurance would remain uninsured. (The only thing that works is increasing the size of the risk pool.)

Ok Yabits, I'll yield on your point. Everyone pays sales taxes. Now you admit mine. Only half the people in the country pay income taxes. That means alll of the poor, and most of the middle class does not. That means all these people haven't got 'skin' in the game.

So the goal is giving a handout to the insurance industry and in return they'll cover more people. Give and take. Give something big, they give you something in return. In this case, congress forces all the citizens in the country, except themselves and some unions, to purchase 'acceptable' insurance, thus giving the insurance industry windfall profits, while increasing their liability a little to make up for it.

Have 95% of Americans received a tax cut as promised?
