To say it didn't happen was a lie under oath. An independent special prosecutor is needed. We can't trust them in the first place to investigate those who appointed them let alone the fact that they were involved in the issue under investigation and lied about their involvement.

From the sounds of it, it's pretty hard to defend what Sessions may have done. So the only options left are to either discredit the proof of having met, or discredit the person making the claim.

He should have stated he didn't meet with the Russians in the capacity as a surrogate for Trump. He should have been clear that he did meet with them in his official capacity though. His lack of clarity makes it look pretty suspicious, like he was trying to hide something.
