....it drove wildly back and forth after activists surrounded and started hitting the vehicle with wooden batons they seized from police.

It sounds quite reasonable to me why they rammed people with their van.

Duterte wants to be friends with Russia and China; it seems that lack of education in his country is a growing trend. With friends like that, who needs enemies? We have no bases there, no need to extend any aid to them. If they want to be a colony of China, again, no need to care. Just wait for the next typhoon, and see what help China provides.

And this people (Police) are the ones who got salary increase from DUTERTE! He doesn't see the picture that the POLICE is the main problem of the Philippines. Raising their salaries to end the issues is really a stupid solution as the problem of these people is not the money! it's their lack of education and messed up attitudes! Duterte doesn't know what the hell he is doing! and now they became more powerful and get much more authority, thanks to DUTERTE! Police is the cancer of my country and Duterte is empowering them more and more! I won't be surprised if Duterte will make this look like it's America's fault so people will blame and hate them more, I really hope that US and EU will take off their aids and all their contribution to the Philippines asap so these proud filipinos who claim that we don't need America will realize the consequences of their ignorance.

Philippines is quickly approaching the point of not return in terms of the US alliance. Duterte has whipped up the population into an anti-US frenzy for no logical purpose other than to join the growing club of nationalists. The US would be wise to heavily punish them for this catastrophic error

Duterte has whipped up the population into an anti-US frenzy for no logical purpose other than to join the growing club of nationalists.

Those anti US demonstrators, for the most part, are the offspring of the very same ruling aristocracy that Duterte has vowed to usurp. All the ones I've met are basically from affluent backgrounds and are nationalists of the idealistic stripe. They are pretty similar to the pampered rich kids in American universities who get their heads filled with high ideals and take to the streets to show their solidarity with the common folk. But from my observations they really don't have much of feeling for what is going on, outside of their own privileged universe.

So while Duterte is getting cozy with China and these demonstrators are demonstrating; the most recent poll (2015) of the Filipino people showed a 90%+ favorable opinion of the US and its influence in the region. Disapproval of China and its regional policies stood at around 65%.

Anecdotally, among my Filipino friends, family and acquaintances; support for Duterte's anti drug and corruption policies is universal. But the same can not be said for his anti US rhetoric and overtures to China. Among this group there is zero support for that aspect of his Presidency. How this all plays out should be interesting to watch.
