If it's a 'a permissible protocol', what's the problem?
At their ages, instead of being dragged around the world they should be put out to pasture, more time spent with feet up in front of the telly of whatever it is old royals do. Let Charlie and his missus earn their keep. Can't seriously see anyone objecting to people not curtsying to Camilla.

As the elected (oops thats right she wasnt elected now was she) head of Australia, a country which is a part of the monarchy regardless of her personal feelings should do the right thing. But wouldnt expect anything better from this scum of a PM

I agree with Dentshop. There was no controversy, the Queen is very happy here and people just like to stir things up.

Yes Cleo show the proper respect to the head of the country, afterall Australia was founded by the British and is still a member of the commonwealth and part of the monarchy. Until the Australian people vote to become a republic then the elected head of the nation should act accordingly. But when it comes to a backstabbing piece of horse excrement like her one shouldnt expect any better. At least she didnt knife the queen in the back like she did to her former leader.

(You don't really think the Queen was elected, do you? She's there because she happens to be her father's daughter, she happens to have no brothers, and her uncle happened to quit the job.)

Permissable protocol is waiting for the queen to extend her hand first. Extending your hand as if you expect her to take it is a BIG no-no. Gillard is very clear that she waited.
I would have chosen the same move, despite being happy to remain part of the monarchy, simply as I never have curtsied and wouldn't expect to be able to pull it off without looking like a total dork.
There's no flap to see here. Just the media trying to convince us otherwise.

I am no expert on the Welsh, but I have the feeling that if you expect one to curtsy, it will be long wait no matter who you are. And good on her too. As far as I am concerned it should be the queen doing the curtsy as she occupies a lower position as figurehead than the Aussie PM does as an official head of state.

A simple handshake is quite acceptable, I doubt the Queen would take offence in the omittance to curtsy

Well my obviously right wing monarchist mate I am 62 and I stopped standing up in the theatre for god save the queen in about 1964 which is about when it dawned on me that the monarchy have SFA to do with the running of this country and frankly don't deserve the time of day from us. It still breaks my heart to think of all the young men that died in WW1 for "King and country", those poor deluded souls may they rest in peace. And the really painful part was most of them were sent to their death by the bloody aristocracy that were given rank as a result of the monarchist system. A bit like the family hand me down that determines the next monarch. Gillard is the head of our government whether elected or not and as far as I am concerned she should bow and scrape to nobody unless she's bending over to gut Mr rabbit. Comments on the more unfortunate end of the socio economic spectrum don't serve you in a good light either.
