The Republicans need to win in the Senate and even then the President can veto. Super majority the genius of the American system. The founders of America were worried about the "tyranny of the majority". So while the Republicans may win it is not total control.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

I don't necessarily want total GOP control, especially with moderate Republicans in charge but it is going to be a big night for Republicans and deservedly so. Pretty much anything is better than the way things are going now.

If you don't want total GOP control, what do you want? Because the way things are going now, there is no way at this rate, the country cannot sustain this kind of division.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

In the 2012 general election, Democrats received an overwhelming majority of the votes cast for House seats (1.4 million more votes), but Republicans maintained an overwhelming majority of House seats.

The Republicans have successfully rigged the elections so that the will of corporations is superior to the will of people.

The Republicans have successfully rigged the elections so that the will of corporations is superior to the will of people.

Quite the contrary.

1 ( +10 / -8 )

If you don't want total GOP control, what do you want? Because the way things are going now, there is no way at this rate, the country cannot sustain this kind of division.

Exactly. So your party should try some bipartisanship, instead of ripping apart your country by opposing everything the Democrats propose, simply because the democrats are proposing it.

The Republicans have successfully rigged the elections so that the will of corporations is superior to the will of people.

Quite the contrary.

You obviously don't know what gerrymandering is.

3 ( +12 / -9 )

@ Stranger - Lemmee guess, is that "no voter ID" or allowing illegal immigrants to vote? Still can't figure out how 100% of districts voted for Obama either.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

The Republicans have successfully rigged the elections so that the will of corporations is superior to the will of people.

The democrats have done the same thing whenever they could, district lines have never remained static, it's all part of the game.

As opposed to the will of the government being superior to the will of the people? At least with corporations, I have a choice. I can use which products or services I like. Coporations want profit, but they are beholden to the people to buy their goods and services and supply thos profit. The people's relationship with corporations is much more powerful than you think, just look at how the public has reacted against McDonald's, and how quickly McDonald's has responded. How responsive is your governement to your concerns?

Despite the current mess America is in, and despite the fact that the congress' approval rate is surpassed by the approval rate of cockroaches, most will be reelected. I trust corporations far more than I trust politicians and bureacrats. I vote with my wallet whenver I go shopping, and corporations will do more for my vote than politicians will.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Isn't looking good for the Dems at the moment. I guess the great president made a couple mistakes along the way.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

Exactly. So your party should try some bipartisanship, instead of ripping apart your country by opposing everything the Democrats propose, simply because the democrats are proposing it.

No, actually it's the other way around. Once there is a GOP majority and the Senate is RED again, the president IS the one that has to go to congress, NOT the other way around and show that he is willing to work with them and more importantly work for the people. We shall see.

@ Stranger - Lemmee guess, is that "no voter ID" or allowing illegal immigrants to vote? Still can't figure out how 100% of districts voted for Obama either.

@Mark-The problem is partisan party line people like Stranger can't stand it and do not want to believe that people are actually rejecting most of these liberal failed policies and the fact that people are having renewed faith that the GOP can at least slow the train wreck of this president. It's not looking good at all for the Dems, but anything can happen, it's not over yet.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

the GOP can at least slow the train wreck of this president

Standing in front of moving trains is all the GOP has been doing for six years. I won't hold my breath for any constructive proposals from these people.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

It is playing out exactly as Dick Morris predicted at the begiinning of the Obama presidency.

He said there will be a backlash against the Obama policies, and a return of the GOP. (We are seeing the beginning of this now.)

But he also pointed out that that will be the last GOP government ever. After that, the demographic changes that are already occuring and are massively increased by Obama with this is open immigration and amnesty will kick in and guarantee an Democrat party rule forever, basically turning the US into a third-world style one-party regime.

So, in historical context, what we are seeing see is a blip.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Standing in front of moving trains is all the GOP has been doing for six years. I won't hold my breath for any constructive proposals from these people.

It's over, the Republicans won, finally. Now let's hope they can bring some sanity to congress and reverse some of these liberal nutty polices that have been destructive to the country.

-3 ( +9 / -12 )

Well, perhaps the GOP can now work to finish the job started by Bush / Cheney.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Obama in his own words during in 2010 "election is over, peoples approves my agenda..." Well now Americans just spoke not to approve Obama's failure policy. Back then, Obama and Dems control congress, and they increase the highest deficit ever, more Americans depend on welfare, families net income drop, economics gimmick, and dictators of the world gone wild. Congress couldn't do much since Harry Reid blocked most bills from coming to the floor in order to protect the narcissist Obama. Will Obama and his bots listen to the voices of people now? False image is superficial, and will not last long as this referendum on Obama's policy. The world needs a new direction from America and this is a small step forward.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

There was no conspiracy and no hoodwinking what happened in this election was the people speaking their mind through their vote. And the people showed that they are sick and tired of the PC Liberals giving away the nation.

The people have spoken and the Liberals lost.

This was a warning to the rest of the Western nation's Liberal leaders, your time is up. Sanity shall return and strong leadership will wash away the Leftist infection.

0 ( +10 / -10 )

I hope the GOP doesn't blow it this time by trying to only stick to "moral" issues. Though theyare important, that's not what I expect from elected officials. If they want to have a moral platform, lead a moral life themselves and don't try to put your beliefs views on too many people.

As far as bi-partisanship, this is something that Obama will have to face. The GOP was willing to work with him, and of course on the campaign trail for the past 6 years, Obama says that what they are proposing is out of the question (his question I may add). Time for that to end. I don't think it would make him seem "weak" in not getting it the way that he wants, since for the past 6 years he has been getting things the way he wants, and he does actually look "weak" on the national and international stages.

In my home state of AR, Bill was campaigning hard for the Senate/Gov candidates who were long standing parts of the Clinton machine, and both lost. Hillary was on the trail in Iowa and the GOP won there. Probably now she needs to take a look at what happened in FL with Crist who lost again and realize it is probably better to go in and be who you are, and not try to contort yourself to what you think the people and polls want. If the public likes where you stand on an issue then they will vote. Even if I don't fully agree with a candidate on everything, if I see them willing to hold fast and not try to change too much to be the "every man" then I would probably vote for them because I would at least know where they stood.

This victory may help Hillary/Dems in a few ways. 1) Some economist feel that the economy may make a comback around the later quarters of FY15 or early FY16 in spite of the current government influence in its policies that are hurting it. If it does, then the Dems can say that it wasn't the short term effects of the GOP but the long plan of the Dems that got us there. 2) If the economy doesn't come back as some have projected, then Hillary/Dems can say that even with the GOP House/Senate majority it didn't help.

Now that the election is over, I do hope at least that the GOP and Obama will try to work things out, and I think he may have finally realized that if he wants his party to win the White House in 2016, he will need to eat a little humble pie and work with the GOP. The GOP needs to understand that they can't get everything that they want, and true there are some issues from the past that need to be looked into and some changes to previous legislation needs to be made, but this is not a time for revenge politics but to move ahead. That is how they can stand up to the Hillary/Clinton machine that will not take these losses lightly and will come out in full campaign mode tomorrow.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Red states voted Republican in a midterm election during a Democratic president's second term: what a shocker!

Next up: Republican overreach. Look forward to the next turbulent two years as nothing gets done and the GOP tears itself apart.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

There was no conspiracy and no hoodwinking what happened in this election was the people speaking their mind through their vote. And the people showed that they are sick and tired of the PC Liberals giving away the nation.

If liberals can't understand it by now that the people are outright sending a message and are rejecting their failed policies, then nothing will wake them. This is a complete repudiation of Obama and what he is doing and the people are tired. Liberals can throw out insults and as many as they want, but now they have to come to terms with the realization Obama is a lame duck and the people don't want any part of these crazy policies. IRS, the National debt. ISIS, the VA scandal, Ebola, the border, Obamacare, unemployment, welfare and on and on, we could be here all day ranting off the problematic failure of the Dems and their whacked policies.

@yabits

Well, perhaps the GOP can now work to finish the job started by Bush / Cheney.

That's the best you can do? Suck it up. The best thing about all this is "bye, bye Reid!!!"

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

I left my country because I was so disillusioned with the government and had rose-colored-idealistic views of how other nations operated from afar.

And after having lived or spent extended amounts of time in most G12 nations, I can promise you everyone makes the same complaints about their governments: bickering sides, deadlocked votes, scandals, liars, misappropriating of funds, and so on. It's just a fill in the blank for country name.

America's Democrats and Republicans poopheadedness is no different from say, Japan's arguing parties. The brain farts of politicians is international. The Dems win, The Reps win, who knows if the other had won things would be better.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I think if Americans had a Real choice between group of parties the country might choose different.

This 2-party system Is a fiction and neither party can stray too far from a common centreline, hence no real chances.

Add in the arrogance we can do better and will undo the damage and you end up in a downward spiral both morally and economically.

There is NO existing government system for the amount of people today, all that has been tried falls apart as the population grows.

We need to evolve as human beings and stop holding onto government methods that fail and drag us down.

IMHO

"Republicans claimed a commanding majority in the House of Representatives, capitalizing on widespread dissatisfaction with President Barack Obama and national malaise..."With Republicans also gaining the majority in the Senate, Obama now faces an opposition-led Congress"

How is this possible? Have Obama and the Democrats royally screwed up or what?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Sigh. Even though I saw it coming, it's still sad. Once again, America proves to the world that it's a broken state.

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

"Hillary will win"

That's all we need, Hillary in the White House with a Republican-controlled Congress, lol.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

That's all we need, Hillary in the White House with a Republican-controlled Congress, lol.

There is a very strong chance that 2017 will dawn with the Dems back in control of Congress. Realistic people are quite aware of this.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

FarmboyNOV. 05, 2014 - 02:26PM JST strong leadership will wash away the Leftist infection That sounds more like a dictatorship...

And if the Left would have won you would be saying that the will of the people spoke out. But the left lost and you, as well as many others here aren't happy.

Btw, the Republicans took control by wing seats from the Left. In other words, the people spoke out and did the right thing.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Sigh. Even though I saw it coming, it's still sad. Once again, America proves to the world that it's a broken state.

Yes, it is broken and that's why the Democrats lost...again.

Alphaape:

" As far as bi-partisanship, this is something that Obama will have to face. "

You can be assured that he will ignore that concept and use the remainder of his office to push through as many democrat core issued by presidential decree, and dam the torpedos (aka the concept of balance of powers).

The most significant of which will of course be a so-called "executive amnesty", which in the long term will guarantee democrat party rule forever, aka a 1-party system for your country. Similar to Mexico and most other corrupt semi-democracies south of your border.

So never dismiss this election circus as irrelevant. This presiden will manage to permanently change the nature of your society and government.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

The American public will get a front row seat for the looney toons in the republican party for the next two years. In all, the democrats should be thankful as this will hand them 2016.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

The Republicans have successfully rigged the elections so that the will of corporations is superior to the will of people.

Idon't think so. There were several news soties that didn't get much national attention recently about how a group of Black activist leaders from Chicago and Detroit went on how the Dem party is the really biggest problem in their communities and a recent pastor of a church in the Southside of Chicago stated he was backing the GOP candidate for Gov., and he received death threats (which were played) and how his church was broken into and robbed of $8,000 that was going to be used to build a community center in the area. All because he was going away from what was expected as a Black.

Also, on CNN as they began to make excuses, Cooper and a commentator from none other than the NYT were going on about maybe it is time to get rid of the mid-term elections, since the majority of voters seem to be white, more informed voters and they believe this may skew the elections. In other words, they want more minorities who are not aware of what is really going on to vote to keep them in power.

There was no case of collusion on the GOP in this election. The people voted on what they have seen and what they are going througn. Will electing an all GOP Congress make the sun shine brighter tomorrow? No it will not, and there is still a lot of work to be done. But there was not any rigging of the election. If anything, the more recent stories of how people in MD and IL were voting GOP and the electronic machines were casting their votes as Dem, and they blamed it on the screens not being calibrated, or how the various investigative reporters have been shown to be able to vote twice or not even show proof of identity.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Love the reactions A or B pulled a fast one to win.

This is your goverment that should work for you but seems few have real faith in it doing so and helping the country and citizens.

Time to rethink and elect one that is based on humanistic values and not place x or y or a above others.

All should be equal but that won't till people change their own priorities and values.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I haven't seen turnout figures for tonight but something like 20 million fewer African Americans, Hispanics, unmarried women and young people voted in 2010 compared to 2008. Historically, the core Democratic constituencies of young people, minorities and single women are more likely to skip voting in midterm elections while turnout levels are more resilient among older, richer and white voters. Older people traditionally vote at twice the rate of their younger cohort, add in the low popularity of the president and you get a worst nightmare scenario. Democrats cannot have 2010 turnout. If they have 2010 turnout among their key constituencies, they are going to have worse than 2010 results all over again. Pick your excuse, gerrymandering, corporate money....whatever....it's basic math.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The American public will get a front row seat for the looney toons in the republican party for the next two years. In all, the democrats should be thankful as this will hand them 2016.

I remember two years ago on JT all the Obamabots were jumping with joy that Obama won over Romney and now that the Dems lost instead of taking it in stride and saying and admitting that there IS a problem with the the Democrats and many of their fantasy over the top policies and learn from your past mistakes and rectify some of the internal flaws of your party, it's back to the old name calling and digging in the gutter. But I will tell you this, I think the Republicans learned something with this election and they are going to be careful to not screw up, because the last thing anyone wants is another Clinton in the office.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

It's been like a comedy watching the lefty-lapdog pundits tripping over their tongues as the results of the trouncing came it. Lots of surprises for the demo, in the Senate, in the House, AND gubernatorial races. Plenty of servings of Humble Pie going around. There'll be crow on the White House menu for a while.

The voters that HAD been motivated to vote blue have expressed their disappointment in the Obamao administration by withholding their votes. It was a bloodbath for dems in very much of the country.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

As America sinks, the yen will strengthen. Oh dear.

it's back to the old name calling

Do these sound familiar to you?

the anointed one

the community organizer

liberal loons

the Obamabots

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Do these sound familiar to you?

Yup, Sure do! Most of the name calling is towards the president and Democrats.

By the way, where are most of the other liberals? This thread seems a little empty today.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

I love watching Americans slagging each other off... even better entertainment than the House of Commons in full swing.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

where are most of the other liberals? This thread seems a little empty today.

They're off drinking away their sorrows. Wish I could, but I'm 'working my butt off', as you are.

Me, I've got optimism that the GOP is going to fix all the problems created by that bad man Obama, and by 2016 they're going to find a way to resurrect Ronald Reagan and win the presidency by an unprecedented landslide.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I've got optimism that the GOP is going to fix all the problems created by that bad man Obama

Right! At least the ISIS and Ebola will be taken care of real quickly (if not in fact, at least by falling off the Fox radar screen). In the meantime, the GOP will look to these for inspiration:

Economics: Germany (contracted 0.20 percent in the second quarter of 2014 due to austerity); Environment: China Immigration: Thailand Foreign policy: Russia

"Sorrows," plasticmonkey, is a rather blunt term; it is more of a fascination akin to watching a train wreck in slow motion. January will bring Speaker-in-all-but-name Cruz to power.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Wahoo!   This is awesome.

This GOP senate takeover pretty much guarantees another Dem/Hillary in the WH in '16. :-)

America's now going to have to sit tight for 2 years of crap Right policies. Sorry, guys!

Once Keystone leaks a few times, fracking drains more town water supplies dry, we have a few more massive offshore oil drilling platform leaks, the TPP shreds Americans' liberties, and GOP-denied climate change fries California's crops once and for all, a majority of Americans are finally going to understand how anti-American the Right is and return the Dems and sanity to power.

Awesome. :-)

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Actually, this is a good thing. The Republicans have no choice from here on in but to a) agree with unpopular laws among the GOP or face boot in the next election cycle with the Dems guaranteed the White House again, or b) just get the boot as well as the Dems being guaranteed the WH next time around. The people that voted for the GOP candidates simply out of dissatisfaction instead of seeing that most of the people they voted for in fact have no policies on anything (or flip flop so much you can't tell anymore) that they're going to change their minds when they realize how much worse it will have become under Republican control.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Woo Hoo! Now we can have RomenyCare instead of ObamaCare. Fine with me!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Now we can have RomenyCare instead of ObamaCare.

You must have missed the memo. According to McConnell, Obamacare (at least in Kentucky), is simply a Website.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

the last thing anyone wants is another Clinton in the office

If that were the case, surely the Republicans would have no need to worry. Can't say I understand much about American politics but if no one wanted another Clinton in the White House, no one would vote for one? Or does the result of an election have little to no connection to what The People want?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

OK, I'll take the Republican mandate. The Republicans invented ObamaCare anyway. Both parties want a mandate in order to prevent "freeloading" (Romney during his pres. campaign)

Look at the stock market and how well it's doing. Corporate CEOs must be very pleased with the Dem. white house.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Hillary Clinton is something that no one wants, well no one who isn't a leftist.

I find it funny how the Left wingers are so certain that Clinton will be the next President. But, as this midterm election has shown us the people have the last say. And in my book, 2 years from now Clinton will be as toxic as she is today and there is no way that she will be the next President.

Folks don't want the left in power. They have seen what the left has brought to the table and it has left a real bad taste. The left has outstayed their welcome for a good while to come. IMHO the next President will be a Conservative, but not a NeoCon.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Well, it looks like the liberal gangs are all finally here. Nothing to say up substance but insults and name-calling again. I'm loving this.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

@Joe

I'm not even sure I'd support her if I were a Yank, but I'd bet a fortune she's going to be your next President....

0 ( +1 / -1 )

OK, Republicans, let's see you lead.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well, we heard this same doom and gloom when Newt and the Republicans took over congress when Clinton was president and we got one of the most productive governments yet when Congress and the White House realised they were going to have to work together, How abiout another balanced budget (or surplus)?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Actually, this is a good thing. The Republicans have no choice from here on in but to a) agree with unpopular laws among the GOP or face boot in the next election cycle with the Dems guaranteed the White House again, or b) just get the boot as well as the Dems being guaranteed the WH next time around.

The Dems were equally as confident 24 hours ago and not just got beaten, but massacred. To even say or boast about something like that is the exact reason why the Democrats lost. This was a clear repudiation of Obama and the Dems bottomless bank-robbing policies that have failed for the last 6 years, if the Dems don't get it by now, they never will, now does that mean the Republicans can't screw up? Or course they can, nothing is guaranteed, but they were elected to put the brakes on this president and that's what they are aiming to do. The Dems had more than 6 years to fix this mess and they never seized the opportunity, instead, they wasted their time, either name calling or vilifying and naming Republicans as racist or out to get woman and NONE of those vile tactics worked. You don't know who will be the next president, nor do I. Probably batter to play it safe or do you and libs just want to throw stuff out that could come back to haunt you?

The people that voted for the GOP candidates simply out of dissatisfaction instead of seeing that most of the people they voted for in fact have no policies on anything (or flip flop so much you can't tell anymore) that they're going to change their minds when they realize how much worse it will have become under Republican control.

I think you should give the voters more credit then that. They're a lot smarter, because if they weren't, they were not, the Dems would have one, PERIOD.

I know it hurts, but it's only been a few hours for you. For me, 6 years with 806 more days left to go.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

"that have failed for the last 6 years" stock market? Aren't your friends who are CEOs of Fortune 500 companies pleased with Obama's performance? They are richer now.

"The Dems had more than 6 years to fix this mess" Also, unemployment is down. Part of the mess is fixed, at least.

I heard gasoline prices are down a bit.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

The real winners yesterday were the members of the political campaign business. It is said that $4 billlion was spent in total for these midterms. If you added up every elected offical's salary for the next two years until 2016, it would not come no where near that amount. So we have people spending that much money in total, to get jobs that will pay less than that amount, it can only lead to one thing, someone is going to get rich at the taxpayer expense.

The cynic in me is saying that this election wanted to be lost by the Dems. That way, they can get their donation machine back on track. You now have two years to beat the stump on how the GOP's policies are not working after trying to undo the last 6years of the Dems. Plus, now the likes of Sharpton, Jackson, etc. can get on the bandwagon and say that it was the "white voters" who voted against the Dems since they reject a Black President, etc. Trust me on that one, I listen to "urban" radio from the states and that is all I heard. No real tackling of the issues, but "it's the man's fault."

So with the Hollywood left embarrassed and too vain to admit that they don't know it all, you will see a massive campaign fundraising take place for 2016. Right now, that favors Hillary since so far she is the only one (Dem or GOP) that has a solid base of donors and a machine ready to start. All she needs to do is keep her mouth shut and hope that no one really looks into her past record.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

nishikat:

" I heard gasoline prices are down a bit. "

That is a combination of several factors, mainly: 1) the development fracking 2) ISIS selling oil at dumping rates, and Saudi Arabia cranking up the spigot 3) world-wide economic slowdown, supporessing demand

The democrat party can not claim credit for any one of those. Well, OK, if you insist, I grant you they have some claim to no 3.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

"That is a combination of several factors"

But so many people (who hated him in the first place) blamed Obama for high gas prices before - even though the USA still had pretty much the lowest gas prices in the developed world. So it would be unfair for these Obama haters not to give him credit for gas prices starting to come under control.

They kept saying "It's Obama's fault"

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Is Hillary Clinton really the best presidential candidate the Democrats can nominate for 2016?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Meanwhile, GOP folks, please don't forget that you now have two more years of Obama as president, and Senate filibusters, now done by the Democrats, to look forward to, before Hillary is elected. Enjoy!

No, as with Senator Obama, core Democrats are going to ultimately pass over Hillary Clinton for someone far less of a lightning rod, and with far less baggage. But it will also be a woman. History will record that it was the liberal Democratic Party who chose as their leaders, the first African-American (2008), and first woman president (2016). Hillary is being groomed, but as a straw horse.

It will be fun to watch how nominally "conservative" women are going to react to their moment in history. Think Colin Powell.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Very valid comments, Alphaape, but before jumping to the conclusion that "everyone is doing it" (though everyone is), you might want to look at which party would like to rein in spending and which party considers that "corporations are people." It is similar to the tax code: many criticize liberal corporate titans for taking advantage of tax loopholes that they are against without understanding that that is the nature of the game: They would like it not to be so, but to act in such a way would put them at a disadvantage.

Vastly stricter rules need to be put on donor amounts and donor clarity for both sides to function more fairly. Let's ask: What would Romney say?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

OK, Republicans. Time to govern.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Vastly stricter rules need to be put on donor amounts and donor clarity for both sides to function more fairly. Let's ask: What would Romney say?

Yes, and take the opposite course. You are speaking of something I have coined as the Klink Effect. Named after the hapless colonel from Hogan's Heroes. (An Allied bomb had fallen into the camp and failed to detonate. Hogan's men were ordered to defuse it, and it came down to two wires. Wanting to increase his odds way beyond 50%, Hogan did something brilliant by asking Klink which one he would cut....)

The Romney effect is the Kilnk effect.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Sure, Super, until Hillary leads the Democrats to total victory in 2016, lol, then it'll be yet another chance for them to govern.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

More, more! This is hilarious... Why are those who support the Republicans so... try to think of a nice description... can't... why are Republicans so insulting of the opposition? I mean you call Democrats leftists, liberals or other choice descriptive names. What's wrong with being liberal? Just means you aren't a stick-in-the-mud... remember, the reed that bends does not snap.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

@Laguna,

I just hope that ruling, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, is overturned.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Bruin fan (go UCLA!), most Democrats do. Republicans - meh.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

'I mean you call Democrats leftists, liberals or other choice descriptive names.'

In the mad modern politics of the US which has turned so violently right over the past few decades, anyone with even centrist leanings is labelled a screaming Bolshevik by the right. If a Democrat, let alone a Republican, with the taxation and environment policies of Nixon was President, some of the posters on this site would be converging on Washington with pitchforks dressed as the founding fathers.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Six years ago Mitch McConnell famously was caught on camera saying he would ruin Obama's presidency, but yesterday he tried to sound reasonable. I am not optimistic that having Republicans in the majority in both Houses will be better than Republicans in the majority in just the House.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Heh, the dems' race-baiting and "war on women" nonsense failed ... miserably.

Gee, I wonder what they'll run on in 2016, considering that's all they had this time.

Six years ago Mitch McConnell famously was caught on camera saying he would ruin Obama's presidency....

Funny - the vitriol that has been directed against the President since that time - from questioning his nationality to suggesting he is purposefully introducing Ebola to the US - in retrospect almost makes the remark seem gentlemanly. How times change! - He'd be lambasted for such a remark today for lacking sufficient passion. Reminiscent of North Korea.

What would Romney say?

@ Laguna: I take it that you think the GOP is the party of "Big money donors" well if you listen to the LA media, you would hear of the numerous traffic jams and impacts on the already hectic commute when either Obama or Biden would show up in West LA to pick up donations at $30,000 a plate dinners. But of course they were doing the peoples work by stopping by at a local business and having a lunch and doing a forum on raising the minimut wage or promising amnesty just to make it offical.

Go back and see how many campaign fundraisers Obama has gone through in the past few months. Also take a look at how some of his own people were saying instead of getting intelligence briefings on world events, he was out fundraising. I have known people who were on the White House communications team, so I know that if needed, he could launch an attack and get updates while taking a bath, so I am not going to say that he isn't doing the job, but he is nott committed to the job. A big difference that has been shown by his lack of leadership.

People like to get on the Koch brothers and other big named GOP backers and their donations, but what about Soros and Katzenberg and the other big money donors to the Dems? Aren't they just as guilty of gaming the system?

I'm not disagreeing with you, Alpha, but please re-read my post.

Well I don't think anyone would argue that the voters will get what they deserve after last night. The difference is some of us think they should be capable of more.

We lost because there guys showed up and ours did not.

2016, of course, our guys will show up, and blast them. But then 2018 will come, and our guys will not show up.

That is the problem.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

It's very simple people! All we have to do is look at what the Obama administration has accomplished, or what they haven't in the last six years. As I said from day one, if it's to good to be true, it usually is. Obama came with energy, new ideas, and promises he could not keep. But what I find funny is, the writing was on the wall well into his first term, but after four years of talk, the American people voted him back into office. Was it a lack of suitable choices, or do the American people just like someone who can make them feel better, but do nothing to fix the problem? Please note! I have no ill feelings to the Obama administration, the facts speak for them self.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The races were mostly a close call. I am a bit peeved that the guys who won mostly got help from guys that have been pocketing money instead of paying their American Employees and indeed all of their employees a fair wage. Lets not even mention the tax breaks (eg estate tax) and loopholes. Ugh what a mess. I guess we are on our way to another recession.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I'm guessing the usual when the Republicans have been in power for more than 12 months: Incompetence and the culture of corruption.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a liberal, the problem is, when the shoe is on the other foot, liberals cry foul, now they expect bipartisanship, understanding and demand unity, but when the ball is in their court, they have this ****you attitude accept things the way they are or sit in a corner. Again, Dems had their chance over the last 6 years and besides implementing Obamacare, that is the presidents biggest achievement, but then what? Ok, he got OBL, so what next? What other great achievement has Obama done that will go down in history as being memorable instead of infamous!

America has turned violently right??! I had NO idea and I mean ZERO idea that California and NY were some of the most conservative States in the Union. Wow! And to think, all this time, I was bunkering down. As far as taxing, I have NEVER seen a democrat that hated taxes. Under Obama, we've paid more taxes over the last 6 years with this president than with any other president.

Well I don't think anyone would argue that the voters will get what they deserve after last night. The difference is some of us think they should be capable of more.

They already did, that's why they got kicked out. The voters put this guy in office twice and now they are complaining? This was an Earth shaking night. Hey! After 6 years of broken policies, they already got what they deserved, now it's the time to come together and sit down over some beer get the country up and running and the put aside all the political animosity and the president should lead the way, so only time will tell.

@laguna

And for 8 years, what did liberals call Bush? As I said before, when the shoe is on the other foot there are NO bars.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Funny to see all the conspiracy theories (the Republicans somehow "rigged the elections') lol It's just sour grapes and the fact is that the Obama administration has done a lousy job and this election was an indictment of its failed polices. All voters are hoping for is something better.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

And for 8 years, what did liberals call Bush?

Pretty much the same thing Nancy Reagan called him after encountering him: "The village idiot."

(Never realized Mrs. Reagan was a liberal.)

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Congrats to Republicans, hopefully they will be able to pass some meaning legislation with the next 2 years.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

It must be depressing for liberal Dems to see Demigod Obama and their policies delivered the congress to Republicans. They preach "compassion", but after the verdict announced;,they are not reflecting of their shortcomings; rather so quick to use their favorite blame games on one another. As you see here, it is "compassionate hypocrite" (e.g. African Americans depend on welfare at greater number under divided in chief Obama). Even N.Y Times wrote about voters'second thoughts on hope and change. Hillary's image has not helped the Dems, and will be worst in 2016.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

True, so very true. If liberals don't win, then there HAS to be some conspiracy theory that the Republicans must have done something in order to shift the voting to go in their direction, how else could they win? Yes, there are people that like conservative ideas and principles and NOW let's hope this president finally gets it and if the Republicans don't do a good job, then the voters will reelect the Democrats next time around, it's just that simple. Now that they have been given a second chance, they have the power and the opportunity and more importantly to go to Washington with a message and deliver on that promise to change things. So let's wait and see and hop e what will happen, fact is, we can't afford to go down that same road anymore of free hippie, do whatever, whenever you want.

@sushisake

This GOP senate takeover pretty much guarantees another Dem/Hillary in the WH in '16. :-)

America's now going to have to sit tight for 2 years of crap Right policies. Sorry, guys!

LOL, buddy, you keep telling yourself that, there is nothing wrong with having dreams.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

For all you true bluers (dyed in the wool democrats) calling the republicans obstructionists, here are some facts for you:

There are 352 congressional bills sitting on Harry Reid’s desk, awaiting action. 98 percent of them passed with bipartisan support -- Republicans and Democrats working together to pass legislation. 50 percent of the bills passed unanimously, with no opposition. 70 percent of the bills passed with two-thirds support in the House. And over 55 bills were introduced by Democrats. And Harry Reid did not bring one of them up for debate or vote in the Senate in the last session.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

People voted Republican because they were tired of the dems bullshit.

Lets be honest here; both parties suck and the Republicans were sooo out of touch with everyone that they had to lose. Thats why the dems swept. Most people are actually ok with gay marriage, they don't care. So when republicans were talking about issues like that they decided to go democrat and elect obama.

However, people don't like the democrats now because they don't feel like they are dealing with the pressing issues such as isis and ebola. That's why it swung the other way. And with court precedents ; gay rights are less likely to be stripped so there is less of a threat even if the crazy ones take charge so people went right this time.

It doesn't help that the dems were going full democrat as well with executive orders and spying. it just reminded people how big government the dems are.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The American people have spoken and they are pissed. They are angry with the lack of leadership President Obama has shown.

He could have helped his cause if he and his fellow Democrats would have done more to fight illegal immigration to start. No, not by feeding clothing and then deporting some of them. No, by beefing up the border and making sure that illegals never made it across! Then going after the illegals that are already festering within the US's borders were hunted down and given the big hard boot! Giving illegals amnesty doesn't stop the problem, it encourages more problems!

Next, his foreign policy has been a joke. Syria, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, ISIS etc etc etc etc. He is making the Bush-Cheney debacle look like a spring dance. For those that have forgotten, Hillary Clinton was part of that foreign policy mess and where exactly was she when the call came at 3 am from Benghazi?

Everywhere that President Obama has laid his hands it has turned into a war zone!

lucabrasiNov. 05, 2014 - 07:07PM JST @Joe I'm not even sure I'd support her if I were a Yank, but I'd bet a fortune she's going to be your next President....

She is toxic...

JoeBigsNov. 06, 2014 - 06:32AM JST The American people have spoken and they are pissed. They are angry with the lack of leadership President Obama has shown.

Republicans have been able to make gains this year in large part because voters tend to use midterm elections to vent frustrations at the party in the White House. The reality that the image of the Republican Party has actually gotten worse since few years ago. The biggest problem the Republican party continues to face is the perception among many Americans is that Republican elected officials don't recognize or care much about the challenges faced by people who aren't white and affluent. That's a severe handicap in a country where the electorate, particularly in presidential contests, is increasingly non-white and suspicious of wealthy businessmen.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It's not big deal and you right-wingers should learn to relax. in the 1986 mid-terms, the Dems took back control of the Senate and cemented its majority in the House. I don't recall the talking heads then then saying that that Democratic victory was a mass repudiation of the Reagan policies.

Anyhow, history shows that the president's party routinely loses senate majorities at this stage.

"He is making the Bush-Cheney debacle look like a spring dance."

Two endless and badly executed wars to help people who hate you, costing thousands of American lives and costing US taxpayers a trillion dollars or so. Those wars were always destined to continue forever. That's an odd description of a "spring dance."

Not only did Republicans win in historic fashion yesterday, Republicans were actually elected governor of Maryland and Obama's home state of Illinois! What more proof is needed that Americans are sick of Obamaism. Republicans ran in uniform fashion against Obamacare and Obama's failed economic policies. High taxes and trickle down government has been rejected.

A black Republican women won a seat in the US House from Utah! A black Republican man won his race for the US Senate in South Carolina for the first time since the end of the Civil War. The same state that re-elected a female Indian-American Republican governor. The first women US Senator from Iowa and the youngest women elected to the US House from New York state. According to the American Left such results are an impossibility.

Obama led Democrats to a shellacking in 2010. With Republicans now controlling more seats in the House of Representatives since the 1920's, Obama led his party off a cliff. Democrats wouldn't even admit that they voted for him.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

"executive orders and spying" Will this change if there is a Republican in the WH? Or is it simply used as a campaign tool for the Republicans?

Some people say Obama lacks "leadership" What are some specific examples of that?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

"executive orders and spying" Will this change if there is a Republican in the WH? Or is it simply used as a campaign tool for the Republicans?

Why not? It worked for Obama.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

"Giving illegals amnesty doesn't stop the problem, it encourages more problems!" Reagan when he inked 3M amnesty. It's amazing how some people say the Dems want to make illegals legit in order to secure more votes. Now look at how the Hispanics support the Republicans so much. But borders don't matter so much since (1) mostly overstay visas and (2) illegal immigration is reversing as the global middle class is picking up.

"Why not? It worked for Obama." Of course. It's all a political game.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

But borders don't matter so much since (1) mostly overstay visas and (2) illegal immigration is reversing as the global middle class is picking up.

If you strengthen the border, but the national guard there in addition to the already undermanned Border patrol agents. Immigration has somewhat decreased from Mexico, but from Honduras, Guatamale and El Salvador, it's quite the opposite. It can be done, if taken seriously, If Mexico can have a tough immigration policy as an almost 3rd world country, then there is no reason the US can't do the same.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Maybe they can eventually have Terminators and stuff. Immigration Elon Musk style!

You monitor politician have got this all wrong! Most americans were not pissed off over one party or the other we know they both stink and they they were not representing the will of the people what they were mainly interest in was their own careers. Anytime a local politician can run for office then move up and make $150k or more and get thousands of dollars poured into their personal bank accounts legally and leave office as millionaire forgot who they worked for and quickly became bought by big money Wall Street and large corporation. When Obama came into office he said no pork barrel spending and everything he will do will become transparent well everything he has done has been the opposite and kept secret! He said those friends that we lost during the Bush administration he will reach out to and make them our friends again and tighten our friendship with our allies. Well look at the relationship with the US and Israel and what NSA has done nothing his transparent everything is a secret the friends we had are no longer our friends.Japan got it right with Abe and decided they couldn't just trust the US and decided to defend themselves because of distrust even though the US said they would defend Japan. Let me say this this election had nothing to do with democrats or republicans but what a lot of 'OLD AGE' Americans felt about the way this country was heading. This was the biggest senior citizen turn out in years most minorities don't vote in mid term elections which is stupid because this is really where their vote counts. Most vote for presidential elections when they are promised something that they never get. As a matter of fact most democratic policies have done nothing to help minorities it only hurt them. In my home town of Chicago the very same grass roots organizers that helped Obama get into office was telling African Americans to not vote deomocratic just for that reason. If anything this election was nothing but the peoples disgust with dysfunctional people in office on both party sides and the corruptness. Yes the Republicans are being givien a chance but its more of a set up for failure what will happen next will be another party outside of the Tea party that will rise up only to give people another choice but that to will spell room because the Democratic will rise in the end because Obama has the trump card he will I lease a wave of mass immigration on this country that will spell room for the Republican Party once and for all. This will give america a one party system which the large corporations are already pushing for they want cheaper labor to drive wages down a health care system that Obama care already has in place. His last card is the executive order to finish the job which is not for the will of the people but for the anew World Order

Two points of light: 1) Pretty solid red states of Nebraska, Alaska, Arkansas, and South Dakota all passed increases to the minimum wage law by very wide margins.

2) While the Republicans won Tuesday, the NRA came out a loser. Candidates they had come out against won, and, in Washington State, the people bypassed their state legislature and put an initiative on the ballot (Initiative 594) which passed and essentially removed the "loophole" that allowed private sellers to sell weapons without a background check.

The second one fits the topic on the recent shooting a high school in the state, so more details on this victory for advocates of stronger gun control there.

Obama has been a disappointment... maybe he did not spend enough time at the beach in Hawaii growing up to understand the natural flow of life... he identified himself as a ghetto black when there are no black people in Hawaii, he bows to the Chinese, refuses to acknowledge Arab threat to society, wants to let millions of illegals to infest every city in America... (just to get more voters), killed off NASA, makes taking welfare guiltless... Obama care is a sham... is taunted by masked radical sand people... I 've got a list...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

" wants to let millions of illegals to infest every city in America... (just to get more voters)" Reagan with 3M green card amnesty. And look at the Hispanic voter turnout for the Republicans. I think you have this backwards.

"Obama care is a sham" He stole the idea from the Republicans.

"killed off NASA" But that's less government

1 ( +1 / -0 )

the NRA came out a loser. Candidates they had come out against won

Obviously, you don't live here in the States, otherwise you would know that gun grabbers running for office were shown the door on Tuesday.

In state gubernatorial races, pro-Scond Amendment candidates, supported by the NRA, won:

Here in Texas, Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

In Senate races, NRA-endorsed candidates won in:

Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Yes, yes, we Americans know you foreigners like to think the majority of us support gun control. But in reality, gun snatching candidates took a beating this past Tuesday.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This is why 2 party systems are incredibly undemocratic and really, really stupid. If there is any perceived problem, real or not, the other side will win, there is no other option..

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Obviously, you don't live here in the States, otherwise you would know that gun grabbers running for office were shown the door on Tuesday.

Aggie's portrayal of data is very selective. The NRA came out against the Democratic Colorado governor and for his opponent. The NRA lost. They lost in Connecticut and New York too.

And their biggest loss came in Washington State. Washington is one of those places where national trends start.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Exactly. So your party should try some bipartisanship, instead of ripping apart your country by opposing everything the Democrats propose, simply because the democrats are proposing it.

To be fair Strangerland the house of representatives have in fact passed bills that were authored by Democrat representatives, Harry Reid has refused take his own parties bills that were passed in the house of representatives and put them up for a vote in the Senate.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The NRA came out against the Democratic Colorado governor and for his opponent. The NRA lost. They lost in Connecticut and New York too.

Versus the 14 states that voted against the gun grabbers on Tuesday? That's the definition of the NRA being "a loser" this week?

Heh, interesting spin from beyond our boarders: the majority of voting Americans wanting MORE gun control.......

Wow -1 from a very very wealthy individual? I am surprised that any regular person supports the Citizens United vs. ruling.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I am surprised that any regular person supports the Citizens United vs. ruling.

The Citizen United case validates that every grouping of two or more people are allowed to have a say in the political process - including Unions and Leftist interest groups such as Planned Parenthood and the Sierra Club. These groups are supported by people that are not that wealthy but also people that are filthy rich. Don't worry, there are just as many super-rich on the Left as there are on the Right. What is most offensive about the discussion over the Citizen United case is the resulting attack on the First Amendment by the political Left. They want to limit political speech to only those approved by the government. That is exactly what the Founders put the First Amendment in place to prevent.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

We got Christie, Ryan, Bush and Paul. The centrist is Christie. Center right is Bush. Far right is Ryan. Paul is a loon like his father but will take shares out of the republican party if he doesn't get the nomination and go indie.

I think we can win with either Christie and Ryan. The Bush name is far too exhausting after his brother's fiasco.

Both Christie and Ryan have the capabilities to lead the nation. I think Ryan is the better choice but I'll be happy with either. If both stays out of trouble, we have a good chance to beat Hilary.

The key thing is for Congress is to pass the immigration reform and finalize Keystones and other projects the create more jobs. If our energy policies gets going, we will be self dependent by 2025. Don't get into the trenches on Odumacare which will definitely give the Dems what they want into a drawn out dirty conflict.

Americans, again, boldly ignore the Five Trillion disaster of the Bush/Cheney war rape of the US Treasury to destroy a society based on truth and sold out for profit to GOP-Tea religious fanatics.

As they say, in a Democracy, you get the Government you deserve. Watch now as the compassionate conservatives gut the elderly with the elimination of Social Security, the young as they close schools and drive America into the arms race of Comrade Putin, the model of Republican fascism.

Good bye America, nice knowing you. See ya later Freedom, the Republicans will tell you what to think from here on out.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Wolfpack Nov. 09: "paranoid and lose touch with reality" - the reality is all to clear. Bush's Five Trillion, 25 Billion to Cheney's Halliburton and a perpetual war. The GOP-Tea has promised to end healthcare, social security and women's rights. That reality is just around the corner as they march Americans into their Freedom graves. If one is too blind to see the truth they are a poor judge of reality and are probably enjoying their blood money too much to care. Not all, some are just too stupid to know the difference.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Voter turnout is to blame for this. So many registered to vote, but didn't think it was important enough to vote. Only 36% of all registered voters voted. Which means only 36% made decisions for the rest of the country. That's way too damned low and I'm about to start advocating that if voter turnout is below a certain percentage (55%), then there should be a low that requires people to fined for not voting. I know I work with a few young adults in my business that keep saying, "Why should I vote, it doesn't really matter..." This enrages me to no end. Civic duty folks, civic duty... like jury duty, get it done and over with.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I kind of agree. But on the other hand, looking at how a vote in California is only worth something like 1/20 of other states, I can understand why people in states like that would think it's a waste of time to vote.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Better than not voting at all. Doesn't matter if it's just one state, the whole goal of "democracy" is that the majority of people nation-wide decide, not just a small group.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Anybody remember Obama, still in bragging mode, saying that those who disagree with his politics should "go and win an election"? I am sure you can google the video. It was only last year.

Now, the story suddenly is different. The disagreers went and won an election, but now he will do "some things that they don´t like". In other words, it is my way or the highway.

Amazing he can get away with that. Of course, a sycophantic press helps.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@HonestDictator, Australians are legally required to vote in federal elections, by-elections and referendums. Not voting, without an acceptable reason, carries a $20 fine.

a vote in California is only worth something like 1/20 of other states

Could you explain this claim? House members and Presidential Electoral votes are apportioned on population, so every state is approximately equal. And actually California is better off than most states.

Now in the Senate the situation is different, but that is the way it was intentionally set up.

And in local/State elections every Californian's vote is worth approximately the same as every others Californian's.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Well for those who love Cheney and Rumsfeld why don't you build a large gold statue of them and worship it...
