"The United States has warned that Russian military backing for the Syrian regime only risks sending more extremists to the war-torn country and could further hamper any effort at bringing peace."

What duplicity from the US! Lest we forget, President Assad is warring against destabilizing terrorists. Thousands of Syrians on the move, going anywhere they can we young children in tow, walking for weeks. The US has done nothing to redress this problem but Russia has and is

Bravo Russian and President Putin!!!!!!!

I hope Putin can use his powers for good this time. I'd like to see him wipe out ISIS and annex the entire region. The US had it's turn and they failed, time to let someone else try.

Kerry has to go, and the sooner, the better. Assad may be a monster, but he is a better monster than ISIS. Our failure to support the one legitimate government in Syria is the reason for the Syria mobs invading Europe. Putin, bless his totalitarian heart, is sometimes right.

The U.S.-led coalition is carrying out almost daily strikes against the jihadists in Syria.

And then the brass in DC are lied to by falsely claiming progress is being made.

Kerry has to go, and the sooner, the better.

The whole enchilada needs to go, the entire administration. Putin is really on the ball and snubbing all over Keryy, Carter, obama . . . good for him.

Interesting to see the radical Republicans teaming up with the fanatical Russians. A match made in heaven?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Radical republicans teaming up with fanatical Russians? More like common sense adverse to socialistic domination. If anyone thinks the Russians are doing the region or the world a favor wake ip. Russia has never done anything without expecting some return.

Just 1 more year of the enchialda then prosperity again!

Russia actually has alot at stake in the region even if it's not immediately obvious. Their oil and gas revenue has been hurt by Saudi Arabia's decision to keep pumping oil despite the low prices we saw a few months ago. Moving into the region gives them leverage.

" The United States has warned that Russian military backing for the Syrian regime only risks sending more extremists to the war-torn country and could further hamper any effort at bringing peace "

Insanity! Assad is the only one who actually fights against ISIS and who protects Yazidis and Christians in his territory. And the White House, in bottomless wisdom, support.... the islamic radicals.

It is a good thing that Russia supports Assad, but really we should be doing that, instead of lining up with Saudi Arabia and Qatar to support the ISIS headcutters.

Actually many European allies of US were applauding Russia's military step in Syria and they understood the Obama administration is insane and uncompetences. Obama still has a year to go and Americans must substains the damage of 'US influences over global affairs 'under him. Goodluck Mr Putin here is your turn to ROLL!

Burning Bush 28 combat planes that will target ISIS and Al Qaida. What's the problem America?

Somebody still need these good guys..

Not all heads cut away yet...

The new Afghanistan. NATO should be grateful that Putin is prepared to make the same mistake twice. or even admire him for following their own lead.

Wakarimasen

" The new Afghanistan "

No, not the "new Afghanistan". The Assad regime is home-grown and has the support of Alevites, Yazidis, Shiites, Christians, Druzes, and secular Sunnis. While the current US government is supporting the Sunni islamist head-cutters of ISIS and Al Nusra. You figure which side should be supported by any person who does not want to live under stone-age Shariah.

the Afghan government that Russia supported was "home-grown". and whatever our views on Assad (and I happen to think that, like Saddam and Gaddafi, deciding all of a suddenly he is evil and must be removed was another NATO/US/EU mistake) fact is the war on ISIS is probably also unwinnable. so my point is NATO should be grateful that Putin is the one who is not going to win it and that we are not seeing more US/UK/other kids dying because of dump strategic choices.

" the Afghan government that Russia supported was "home-grown" "

No, the Najibullah regime came as a result of heavy Soviet support. And even then, the Soviets had basically won the war against the Mujaheddin islamists, if Reagan had not made the mistake of supplying the headcutters with Stinger missiles. I hope Obama is not planning to make the same mistake.

Shut up Obama! What's the matter with US? Obama has failure to act against ISIS in beginning of ISIS emerging in Syria. Now he doesn't want Russian fighting ISIS. He doesn't want to send US Combat troops into Iraq and Syria. Obama you can't stand in the middle of the road. You need shut your big mouth for sake of Syrian peoples.

Putin, bless his totalitarian heart, is sometimes right.

Damned straight. In this case, our government needs to remember, "Better the devil you know...". It's not like they haven't supported dictator's before.

The best thing that Putin should do is to pull assad out to a safe place (temporary or permanently it will make those religious cleric be very fearful ,,,, they can't continue to do fairytales story when their business is running out )

it will do two thing ,,,, prove that islam ideology exist when dictator is toppled and chaos is spread

one time I read in washingtonpost comment two moslem commenting one of them was talking about a big ISIS ( as a result of domino dictator topple ) making the whole region is a big ISIS dominating the entire area ( As a jewel )

Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah Al ash-Sheikh that blind man was the man behind the scene admin and al shenaifi who is always wandering in their area usually at 4:00Am

if assad in a safe place and ISIS exist ,,,,, it will prove that islam exist in violence atmosphere ,,if not then assad nationalist forces will crush rebels eventually

That will destroy the religion cleric business of Saudi arabia ,,, and will make them crumble in fears ,,, Assad is moslem but he won't sacrifice himself for saudi arabia big project of greater ISIL , he will prefer to be the last one or not participate at all

Honest Dictator:

" Damned straight. In this case, our government needs to remember, "Better the devil you know...". It's not like they haven't supported dictator's before. "

They are still supporting dictors now... but only those of the islamist type. Obama is supporting the Saudis, the ISIS headcutters, the Bengazi "freedom fighters" aka Ak Quaida, the Muslim Brotherhood thug Morsi in Egypt... the list goes on. Why? Go figure.

Gone Mike:

" Assad is moslem but he won't sacrifice himself for saudi arabia "

Assad is an Alevite, which is a branch of Shia. Saudi Arabia is Sunni, as is ISIS. That is why Saudi Arabia is supporting ISIS, and Iran is supporting Assad... get it? It is a proxy war.

But if you compare the record of the relatively secular Assad regime and that of ISIS, it is a no-brainer who we should support. Alas, Obama in his bottomless wisdom sides with ISIS.
