Turkey made a big mistake to become part of the Saudi/US/EU project to dismember Syria in order to build that planned natural gas pipeline from Qatar to Europe. The emergence of Islamic State came as a bit of a shock to all involved, except perhaps for its Saudi backers. Turkey is making a necessary adjustment now, aligning with Russia. There will be a pipeline to Europe going through Turkey in the future, but it won't be bringing in Saudi gas.

It is extraordinary that the IS has so much firepower without being represented by a countries economy. It has no country, but never is at a loss for it's emmense funding.
