Horrific! RIP to those killed. Hopefully at the very least this makes seatbelts mandatory for such buses. They should be already.

Smith: What information in this article made you believe that seatbelts would have saved any lives?

"The speed of bus was so significant that the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus," Abele told reporters.

The US is usually pretty good when it comes to traffic safety rules/laws. I'm guessing that there is some kind of reason for them not to have mandatory seatbelts in buses.

Seatbelts wouldn't have changed much Smith. Buses may look big but they're about as resistant to impact as a caravan especially in this kind accident - the back of the trailor will have cut through the cabin like a hot knife through butter.

This is the worst kind of salvage I was on one of these jobs years ago - the damage to the people will have been horrific. Emergency responders aren't paid enough to deal with this kind of carnage, the images in the mind don't go away even years after event.

A 15 foot entry of the truck into the bus...seatbelts or not, fifteen feet into a bus takes out the first five rows.

So sad. Interstate buses travel at high speed. Not sure if driver was that alert or whether he kept a safe distance. Driving overnight is stressful.

I prefer to use Greyhound hoping that their drivers are well-trained professionals who are used to over-night driving.

In the end, it is Fate. I have travel that highway before on express buses.

Report was no children. Another report is the driver is half owner of this tour bus business. One thing. There was no seat belt every. Channel reported.

I work/live near this. I think that I will choose the center of buses next time one is to be ridden...
