Does he know what it is?

Doesn't matter. When you have no viable alternative, listen to your minders and just say, "Sure!" Glad Trump didn't go all Australian on Xi.

Someone just told Trump that China is also a world power. Apparently he was stunned and said, "so I can't just nuke them?". Equally surprised to discover that China would nuke back. And tweeted madly that "THIS IS NOT TRUE - FAKE NEWS!" when informed that China had been a super power 5 times in recorded history. He wanted to tweet more but in his hysterical excitement the fingers on his little hands got all tangled up and Kellyanne Conaway as not around to fix the problem. Although his press secretary, the Spice Man said ..................Oh, never mind what he said.

Xi should punish the military aircraft that buzz Japanese and American ships and get threateningly close to non-Chinese aircraft. If he hasn't and China's dangerous provocations and such as the Senakaku military build up. Notice how there have been no such acts since Trump was elected President?

If China persists (President Trump and the new Secretaries of Defense for both Japan and the US), don't doubt there will be a price to pay for China either in economic sanctions or Chinese pilots to rescue. China probably fears the economic sanctions more than the military stomping they would get. China sees their military as expendable whereas money is precious.

China has been flexing it's military muscle after gaining the second economic power and investing massive amounts in their military. While the Obama administration was passive and even submissive, the current US administration will not tolerate crap like China has done the past 8 years. Draw a red line and stand behind it. Japan would not have stood for such aggressive moves from China if Japan felt Obama would support them.

Trump finally realised, or was told, that his success or failure lies mostly/partly with China. All leaders are the same after all, there is China then 'the (expandable/bulliable) others' .

I disagree. At one time Japan was the economy to watch as the second largest economic power. The tides of economies change. That change is influenced by how wealthy consumer nations react to large manufacturing nations like China. When I am able, I choose to buy other than China made products. However, my purchasing choices are getting very limited today. Just like a planting a tree, it takes time for it to grow. Japan and the US have planted too many seeds in China. It is up to consumers to plant new seeds in our respective countries. I will speak for myself and say I don't mind paying more for a product made in Japan, the USA, or free democratic societies.

Donald: One China policy is opened for negotiation!

China: No! Will take revenge on your personal investments and US in general

Donald: OK! I'll honor the One China policy!

China: Good...

Spicer: President Trump never said he will negotiate the One China policy!

Press: We have the Tweets...

Spicer: Fake news!

The call had been going surprisingly well until Trump ended it by ordering kung pao chicken and an egg roll. Trump is the epitome of an internet bully; talk tough until in a one on one and then back down completely.

And it begins.. I've been saying from the start that Trump is going to get dominated like a small girl when it comes to Russian and Chinese diplomacy. It hasn't been 3 weeks and he has already cowered to China and he hasn't even met Xi yet.. Just hope he doesn't have a breakdown when he actually meets these leaders in person

The statement marked a return to a more traditional U.S. policy after Trump had told the Wall Street Journal last month that the “One China” policy was up for negotiation.

So Trump supporters are going to say what now? Say that's what he meant to do from the beginning?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

It is NOT necessary for Mr.Trump to understand what is one China policy but I think Xi must applaud his stance after learning the Chinese contributions to America's Infrastructure construction projects. Mr Trump wants Chinese pouring in monetary for his plan. Brilliant!! You guys must respect Mr Trump's vision of running political issue in his business approach! Good luck, the freedom world!

Trump has already backed down. Soft. Taiwan is an independent nation and should be treated as such. China can go to hell!

So much for "The Art of the Deal." Wait until your opponent stands firm, and then cave.

100% agreed!

"The statement marked a return to a more traditional U.S. policy after Trump had told the Wall Street Journal last month that the “One China” policy was up for negotiation."

A month ago? That's centuries in Trump time. This man is capable of contradicting himself within a sentence.

Just off-the-cuff stupid s###.

So what's the point of challenging the status quo, then supporting it? What was your long-term goals with these statements.....just temporary headlines?

He was showing he's a strong leader. He tweets in capitals.

"Does he know what it is?"

Yeah, he does. Did Obama?

Trump was probably nodding and winking during his entire phone conversation with Xi, but Xi couldn't see that, heh he

Obama couldn't even show that he was a strong leader, but at least Xi is a bit more cautious about Trump, still trying to size him up. Good, love the fact that China doesn't know how to take on Trump.

Trump was probably nodding and winking during his entire phone conversation with Xi, but Xi couldn't see that, heh he LOL and Xi was probably nodding and winking when he said "No Mr President, well still honor that $Trillion Boeing orders, no taxes or tariffs on American companies doing business in China, yes our economy is where all the growth is in the coming decades where open for business for American companies. Now what was it you said about that 40% tariff on Chinese imports!?" Trump: Mr Xi dont mind me I was only joking LOL

We are all holding on, hoping to survive the Age of Trump, and its coming disasters.

That could be true, knowing Trump. But, it is now on the record, that Trump made a bluff, and Xi stood firm, and now Trump backed down. See, acting tough is being different that being tough. In the world, the point goes to Xi, and Trump looks weaker now. He'll probably start tweeting about an Islamic terror plot or something to try to distract people from this.

Trumpophobia brings a powerful new meaning to the old adage "Your damned if you do and damned if you don't"

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

bass4funk, I don’t know how you got the idea that Xi is “still trying to size him up” and “that China doesn't know how to take on Trump.” The only country whose leader is “still trying to size him up” is Japan, did you hear about gifts, golf and “employment” package? The titles of some news reports say it all that Xi does know how to take on Trump: “Trump says he'll honor 'One China' policy in call with Xi,” “Backing away from a fight, Trump to honor one-China policy,” “Trump, Changing Course on Taiwan, Gives China an Upper Hand,” “Trump cedes new ground to Beijing with about-face on ‘one China’,” “Trump backs One China policy in 'cordial' call with Xi,” “Trump changes tack, backs 'one China' policy in call with Xi.” “Trump reaffirms 'one China' policy in call with China's Xi.”

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Which China is Trump going to honour, Mainland China or Tawain?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

China's intransigence over Taiwan is mind boggling. Get it through your thick sculls. The people of Taiwan do not want to be part of the People's Republic of China and why would they want to be?

When a country has its own military, parliament, head of state, currency and border controls then it is an independent country and should be treated as such.

China is headed for a fall anyway, Genocidal dictatorships never last.

President Trump lied. That's what he does. After he slept, that conversation was forgotten.

Well, what are you worried about then? Taiwan will be independent when that happens right? But it seems like your comments here is showing a sense of anxiety and frustration. It seems you feel like Trump was Taiwan's only chance, and since now that's gone, you resorted back to standard talking points.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

So, the so-called president needlessly and thoughtlessly provokes creates contention with China over the one-China policy with the call with Taiwan's president, then lashes back on Twitter when China pushes back, and then folds like a cheap suit leaving his supporters to scratch their heads about what the heck that was all about.

Amateur hour has turned into amateur presidency.
