U.S. Cities See Unexplained Rise In Violent Crimes This Year

Three letters? NRA.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Chicago, a city long associated with violent crime that plagues its poorer neighborhoods, saw six people fatally shot over the Memorial Day weekend and 56 wounded, ending a bloody month in a bloody year.

Chicago? Why am I not surprised. . . .LA too.

Three letters? NRA.

Or BLM. Try wearing the shoe for once and stop blaming the NRA. Look! How many drive-bye shootings were there in upper middle class Orange County or Austin, TX?

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

Look who has handcuffed law enforcement and the rule of law.

Unexplained means no one knows.

The difference? Everyone knows the influence of the NRA.

Look who has handcuffed law enforcement and the rule of law.

Huh?

Unexplained means no one knows.

6 more months perhaps, the FBI will analyze the data further, crunch the numbers. Have faith in the FBI and the US' renowned intel agencies.

Everyone knows the influence of the NRA.

You mean like the influence the poisonous gangster-rap lyrics has on inner city youth. Who take drugs, consume alcohol and pull triggers on each other?

You're kidding yourself if you think it's only inner-city youth who are listening to gangster rap. It's popular across almost all youth demographics. The problems in inner cities are not a result of gangster rap. Gangster rap is a reflection of those problems. You've got your cause and effect backwards.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

You've got your cause and effect backwards.

Maybe so. I just wish Blacks and Hispanics would quit the violence in their communities. You don't see this kind of violence in the nicer areas of town.

Gangster rap is a reflection of those problems.

Its a vicious cycle.

Look who has handcuffed law enforcement and the rule of law. - reply "Huh?"

Police Officers in the State of Connecticut, (the State where 26 were slaughtered in a grade school, twenty children ages five to six among the dead) were faced with a gun bearing individual at a sandwich shop.

The Police Officer asked for his permit.

He refused.

The NRA told the gun totter he had no reason to answer Law Enforcement's request for a permit.

The reader can judge for themselves, does the following affect violent crime or handcuff Police in their sworn duty to protect the public?

Picked up Thursday by a number of websites, the video shows the viewpoint of the armed man, who is repeatedly asked by Bridgeport police officers to show them his gun permit.

The footage, said to have been recorded Monday, raises questions about the rights of permit holders to openly carry weapons — and about the rights of police to demand documentation.

In the video, the cameraman repeatedly refuses officers’ requests to show his permit, arguing that the law does not compel him to comply.

“I’m not showing you anything,” he says. “I want to order my food and get up out of here.”

Leave the discussion to the reader's own reasoning, however, the 'unexplained' isn't.

The NRA is working to encourage its members to disrespect Police Officers to prove a point.

The NRA, through open carry, is having a willful conflict recorded to challenge Police Officers in the ordinary caution the Public expects when a Police Officer encounters a gun toting jackass in a sandwich shop.

Bent on disrespecting Police Officers in the States to prove the NRA's claim 'gun carry rights are sacrosanct'? That's called handcuffing the Police.

Why would that account for the unexplained rise in violence?

Not every dummy carrying a gun should, or should be trusted with a deadly weapon at a sandwich shop.

The NRA is working to encourage its members to disrespect Police Officers to prove a point.

Huh? For the most part, NRA and its members are often on the same page as law enforcement.

The NRA, through open carry, is having a willful conflict recorded to challenge Police Officers in the ordinary caution the Public expects when a Police Officer encounters a gun toting jackass in a sandwich shop.

I ain't buying this. Besides what does this have to do with all the violence over the Memorial Day weekend? Im sure all those homicides were NOT officer involved shootings. Not even a fraction.

The article is about violent crimes in US cities. Not about officers confronting "open carry" patrons in some sandwich shop.

Give 'em guns for Christmas: then they will be able to protect themselves.

What is a positive feedback loop.

"Americans have grown accustomed to low crime rates since a peak in the 1990s."

I think 'relatively' is missing between low and crime, or lower I.o low. But low crime rate in ain't not!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

You know what would be some good data to have.

The number of NRA members involved in gang shootings in Chicago or L.A. or even the number of NRA members that are members of inner city gangs.

The NRA told the gun totter he had no reason to answer Law Enforcement's request for a permit.

Actually, Connecticut State law is what is telling this college educated, law abiding black man that he has no reason to show his permit. The law states that the police can ask for an open carry permit if there is compelling evidence that a crime is being or has been committed. The incident at the Bridgeport Subway failed to meet that requirement. If you have a problem with a citizen exercising their rights under the law then your problem should be with the law itself. As for this "jackass" being a "dummy", he knows the law better than the police, so who's really the dummy.

Yep, the law is messed up alright.

kcjapan - U.S. Cities See Unexplained Rise In Violent Crimes This Year

Three letters? NRA.

I prefer to blame the rise in violence on the thugs who are actually breaking the law. You may prefer to introduce red herrings.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Connecticut "open carry" law:

The state law, Public Act 15-216, is more specific, stipulating that the permit holder must show proof to “a law enforcement officer who requests it for purposes of verifying the permit’s validity or person's identity if the officer observes the person carrying a handgun and has reasonable suspicion of a crime .”

The guy in the video is correct in that he does not need to show his CT (open or concealed) gun permit since he is not under "reasonable suspicion of a crime." That is what the State of Connecticut has decided. If Police continue to harass this individual he can do a citizen arrest and/or have them prosecuted.

There are all sorts of reasons for an increase in violence. Basically the majority of Americans seem to be unhappy. The blacks are angry that police are killing them in disproportionate numbers. The whites are unhappy that the blacks would dare to make a BLM movement when they are killing each other with guns. The latinos are unhappy that their families are being threatened to be split apart. The Trumpers are angry about illegals. The Democrats are unhappy that so many people are openly racist and bigoted. The democrats are unhappy that the country hasn't embraced their discriminator practices. The poor are unhappy they cannot get out of poverty. The rich are unhappy that they may be taxed more for being rich. Gun owners are unhappy that people want to restrict free ownership of guns. Non-gun owners are unhappy that they could be shot at any given time, anywhere. Everyone is unhappy. Everyone is angry. Basically, in a country that has preached individualism, everyone is unhappy that they are not the lead individual, and that everyone isn't meeting their individual needs and demands.

Of course this is going to result in violent episodes and outbursts.

Chicago, a city long associated with violent crime that plagues its poorer neighborhoods

Perhaps First Lady, M. Obama, should go there and make speeches. She's from there isn't she? Obviously that US city needs it.

. . . .instead of bashing Donald Trump as she has recently done in some "speech" or other.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Typo in my post.

This:

The democrats are unhappy that the country hasn't embraced their discriminator practices.

Was supposed to be this:

The republicans are unhappy that the country hasn't embraced their discriminator practices.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Freudian slip? lol

2 ( +5 / -3 )

I blame the liberal leftists. You only need to read up on those Trump riots to see what I'm talking about. "Tolerance" at its finest. Lol.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

There is no, "One cause fits all" in this situation. It's a variety of societal and economic based problems that help crime rates go higher than before. Lack of financial stability, lack of residential security, lack of common sense and moral decency, political corruption and discord, corporate greed, and being expected to perform above and beyond for absolutely minimum return... plus more that would take too long to post.

In all, American's happiness is declining because what used to work to accomplish the American dream is steadily being tossed into a dumpster fire and stepped on by too many things to count.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

The family structure in the inner cities has been demolished. For much of this you can thank LBJ's great society policies which robbed the head of the household of his economic function, making him a "superfluous man." Is it surprising then, that he removes himself from family responsibilities that no longer rest on his shoulders, and drifts, or is even pushed out of his home into the male street-corner society, leaving his children with no role model. Thus the prevalence of gangs.

The fundamental problem of the welfare system, a vicious circle in which the best of intentions have merged into the worst of results. This is one of those results.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

The problem isn't the existence of the welfare system, it's the fact that so many people have been pushed into needing it, due to economic inequality from all the money being filtered up to the top, with not enough of it trickling down.

Back in the day, a man could work at the supermarket and support a family. The owner of the supermarket was not a major corporation reaping massive profits and paying million dollar salaries to its CEOs and executives, it was a guy who made more money than the staff, but nothing ridiculous.

Unbridled (or at least, only slightly bridled capitalism), is what has caused the inequality that has caused so many to need welfare just to eat and have a place to sleep.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

The welfare system in itself is oppressive. It was designed to be a helping hand however it has become a lifestyle. Socially, economically and ethically it has oppressed. Lately we are led to believe entry level employment are career positions. Again, not helping self esteem. The USA is in a mess and needs change.

Fair paying low skilled jobs are a start. Factory production comes to mind. Not unionized, not mandated salaries just gold old supply and demand dictates wages.

Addressing the posts above associating the NRA with lawlessness is childish. The NRA is an across the board membership association. As Wc pointed out law enforcement and NRA are intertwined. And few if any murders are committed by NRA members.

The past year the Trevon effect and Ferguson effect and soon to be the Freddie Grey effect are factors in low esteem communities. Thank you ovewhelmingly liberal MSM! Your responcible reporting has elevated violent crime and oppressed law enforcement.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

It was designed to be a helping hand however it has become a lifestyle.

Exactly. So many people were pushed into poverty, with no means of getting out, that they gave up.

Saying 'work harder' obviously doesn't work. The people need motivation, and beyond that, hope, in order to get them off welfare.

Fair paying low skilled jobs are a start. Factory production comes to mind. Not unionized, not mandated salaries just gold old supply and demand dictates wages.

Without unions and/or mandated salaries, 'good old supply and demand' will continue to do what it does now - pay peanuts. Which turns into corporate welfare, since the companies are paying such low salaries, that the working people need assistance from the government just to survive. Why should the government be paying salaries for the companies, so that the companies can make profits? That makes no sense whatsoever. Companies should be paying the full salary, not relying on corporate welfare from the government.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Demand is low and supply is high Staranger.....

Welfare recipients were not pushed into poverty. They were poor to begin with. They are lacking motivation then and today. For the last 50 years without racial restrictions. Welfare needs monitoring. Abuse of the system is rampant!

I will agree the wage gap has grown immensely. Globalization and corporate greed are two culprits. Unions have driven out domestic jobs faster than any other factor. They want too much for too little in return. Union labor compared to non union labor is like 2-4x different in total sallary. That's no good. Productivity is more from non Union. That's not right! Unions choke business and overcompensate, in many unions, the employees who cannot be discharged easily by the way.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

The family structure in the inner cities has been demolished.

@kabukideath . . . thanks for putting that out there. (Obama hasn't done enough for Blacks.) Why isn't he raising awareness of so many Black fathers who abandon their children at a young age?

Instead of blaming guns . . . he should be blaming the demolished structure of family values in places like Chicago, Detroit, LA and Ferguson. Somebody must wear the shoe . . . .its not the NRA's fault most of the time. Heck, even obama loves to shoot trap n' skeet. Wonder if he uses a Benelli or a standard "old skool" Remington 870-

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Americans are VIOLENT

Not all. Its sad that some hoods like Chicago, Detroit, LA, Ferguson, DC, San Bernardino County are plagued by violence. Not to mention the D. Trump supporters, (even a pregnant woman) who are constantly beat up and targeted.

Show me a bad, violent community and I'll show you a (D) voting base.

"If you have a problem with a citizen exercising their rights under the law then your problem should be with the law itself." - comments reply: "Yep, the law is messed up alright."

Let's look at that conclusion . . .

The National Rifle Association has taken aim at a proposed change to Connecticut’s gun laws that would make it easier for law enforcement officials to ask to see the permits of those carrying guns in public.

To stop the legislation, the NRA’s powerful lobbying arm on Monday asked supporters to flood members of the General Assembly’s Public Safety and Security Committee with comments opposing the change and to show up at the panel’s hearing on the legislation Thursday.

Let the reader decide what influence the NRA has on Police Officers' rightful and appropriate request to see the carry permit of any jackass dumb enough to march around like some self appointed magnum force.

Would this affect the "unexplained" rise in violent crimes; the gun toter now has authority over the Police in their duty to protect and serve and the NRA dictates the laws to Connecticut's Citizens and at the Capitol in Washington.

Let the reader decide.

kcjapan - Let the reader decide.

This reader has decided that you're trying to serve up a nice plump red herring and it doesn't seem to be working.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Would this affect the "unexplained" rise in violent crimes

No, at least not to this reader.

A good number of posters on this thread have made the excellent observation that this is a multi faceted situation with many different possible causes. Gang violence, the erosion of the family, the welfare system, economic factors like income disparity, social injustice and things like that. Regardless of the positions taken and the differences of opinion expressed, this discussion shows that some people are actually thinking about the problem and are trying to get a handle on possible reasons for it.

Seeing how, as the article states, this is primarily an urban phenomenon seen in certain US cities, with Chicago and LA used as and examples. And seeing how the state of Connecticut has experienced a dramatic drop in violent crime over the past two years and is approaching historic lows. I really, with all due respect, don't see how CT's open carry law and the actions of the NRA are in any way germane to the discussion.

Offering a higher minimum wage and improved standard of living to those who most need it isn’t just about reducing poverty, it would have a quantifiable impact on the country’s overall crime rate.

The problem? Too many stupid people with guns........

The NRA's domination of State and Federal Legislatures is being tested by the Courts in the States.

While the article reports a rise in violent crime as "unexplained," the People are taking the NRA's argument for unregulated sales and transfers of firearms to court.

The NRA gun nuts are losing.

Violent Crime isn't an accident.

Violent Crime It is an opportunity provided by weapons of mass destruction sold to frightened and delusional clowns who think "their rights" to kill at will for no reason but fear is guarded by the U.S. Constitution.

Like Florida's Zimmerman, that perversion of the intent and exact language of the Second Amendment is being addressed by the Courts.

The fear based logic and blood money of the NRA, lobby for the gun manufacturers, is being tested and the only result is American Citizens shouldn't have to accept the slaughter created by handcuffing Law Enforcemnt by the NRA. (examples porvided above)

The American Citizen can read below, the Associated Press is reporting that challenging Police Officers in their sworn duties based on the NRA perversions has run it's sick and blood soaked course.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a victory for gun control advocates, a federal appeals court said Thursday people do not have a right to carry concealed weapons in public under the 2nd Amendment.

An 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said law enforcement officials can require applicants for a concealed weapons permit to show they are in immediate danger or have another good reason for a permit beyond self-defense.

The decision overturned a 2014 ruling by a smaller 9th Circuit panel and came in a lawsuit over the denial of concealed weapons permits by a sheriff in San Diego County.
