Pretty scary stuff happening. If Ukraine falls apart, it will begin from the Crimea. If Russia launches a military intervention, its justification and its target will be the Crimea. The U.S. and Europe must play a constructive role in making sure that Moscow understands that this conflict both can and must be resolved without military intervention, and that a western-oriented Ukraine will not be a threat to Russia.

An article recently suggested the most likely flashpoint for the 3rd World War would be the Senkakus and I laughed - neither Japan nor China would commit their existential survival to those rocks. The Crimea is different.

This has all the makings of a new Northern Ireland.

Much as I believe Putin is an autocratic thug, I don't see why the people in the Crimea can't be allowed to determine their own future. If they want to live under the rule of the Kremlin, let them, provided that the Ukranian minority, those who choose to remain, have their rights guaranteed. (As far as that means anything in Russia).

Sure, it would involve a loss of territory and face, but the alternative, as Laguna says, would be much, much worse.

Scotland's been part of the UK for five times longer than Crimea's belonged to Ukraine, but the people there are being given the chance to decide for themselves.

Putin needs to clean up his OWN country first, before going around screwing with other countries! I know this is about the Ukraine but, not that idiot PUTIN is going on about using the Russian Navy to go to Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and any other country that is stupid enough to let them in!!

Putin has had his olympics. Is he getting ready for a different display? But seriously, is there going to be another stand-off between east and west? Scary thought.

Putin wanted to portray a friendly positive image of new Russia through the Sochi Olympics. The truth of matter is that Russia still remains as a brutally inhumane communist country. Let's make sure we all understand this first.

The people of Russia still live in fear and oppression. KGB (Putin is a former chief of KGB) is still well active and strong behind Putin. Do not let them fool you. We need to understand a macro geopolitics of Syria and Ukraine situations together to comprehend what Putin is calculating to do. Putin is still supplying more weapons to Assad while 150,000 or more Russian troops are on the way.

So the Ukraine could try to exert it's control over an autonomous region that is mostly ethnic Russian. That's not going to end well whether the Russian government is involved or not. And with the Russians involved, that definitely isn't going to end well.

Russia could try to exert control over the Ukrainian government and get their puppet back in play. That's not going to end well for them, either.

So what happens next? My guess is that Russia will firm up it's control over Crimea to protect their interests, then leave things be. It's the path of least resistance where Russia gets something out of it and the Ukraine probably isn't prepared to fight for. The West isn't going to want to fight for that, either.

Ukraine's population is just over 50% ethnic Russian. No matter what posturing the coup government presents, in a free election, Yanukovych’s party will take the parliament and presidency.

In the unlikely event the elections don't go his way, Putin has moved his pieces to quickly annex Russian Ukraine.

At least some of Ukraine will enter the Eurasian Union. Either way, Putin wins.

Uncle Sam is messing with many countries and where ever he goes it's chaos, mayhem and death in the name of democracy.

BREAKING NEWS FROM US

Russian troops are moving INSIDE and INTO Crimea..They are violating a sovereignty of Ukraine. Obama is now holding a press conference condemning Russia for the violation of International law. There is an universal law that needs to be honored and respected that the people of Ukraine has a right to determine their own fate. Let's stand up and allow them to do so through election in spring, not by Russian's military force.
