I heard recently from my Japanese tofu coop vendor that an iron screw (or anything made of iron) should be thrown in the pot when boiling black beans. Supposed to impart an attractive shininess to the beans. Going to throw in my iron paperweight when I make my batch o'black beans before new years!

Like the photo. Seems a bit off kilter and out of focused, though.

Why aren't houses built with more extreme degrees of roofs, as they were in the past? No need to shovel off tons of snow with a steep roof that lets it just slide off!

Whenever they play that screeching theme song at my sports club I just want to murder the singer.

Mike O'Brien, Thanks for the link. Let's hope TEPCO can be trusted to build the dry cask storage to spec and not show the rampant irresponsibility so far demonstrated.

Mike O'Brien...any sources for these assertions of yours?

Wow. I was also bitten by a boxer when I was a small child. Of course, the owner was standing right there saying at the time, "Oh, he doesn't bite."...in revenge, I keep a cat...

BBC said there was only some 1,000 internet addresses & users in NK, so these has to be the leaders and bigwigs. Not exactly world shaking.

Where is the real heart of this story? We are left with " negotiations have stalled with some landowners..."? Who are they? What is their problem? Why can't they give it up and help Japan move forward?

Joe Cocker just died from smoking. I'm sure he wished some of his friends had been more helpful (and more militant) and made him stop smoking. Just sad. Who knows how many people he damaged from second hand smoke as he sucked down zillions of the little white cancer sticks. And people wonder why non-smokers are sometimes polite, but sometimes just sick of it all and get a little pushy.

Cancer sticks takes another great artist away too early. Horrible way to die.

Another pointless and inept mask wearer. However, those cake outfits are pretty great!

I wear gloves when out and about and using public transportation. Those masks are pretty questionable. Too many people (and even in hospitals) treat them like magic amulets and don't wear them to cover their noses. My favorite spotting was someone standing around smoking with his little white paper mask hanging idiotically off his ears. Wonder if this mask thing fad will ever ever ever go away.

Will be there Dec. 31st instead of watching Kohaku. Great photo opp, as the above shows.

Looking forward to having no smoking in all izakayas, restaurants, and basically anywhere indoors. I wonder if in 500 years in the future people will still be sucking those cancer sticks and exhaling noxious fumes all over anyone who happens to be breathing nearby.

Not wearing that stupid mask or getting the shots. Have never had "the flu".
